1 Johnson County Community College Transfer Program to the University of Missouri-Kansas City College of Arts & Sciences Catalog Contact: CAS Advising Phone: (816) Homepage: cas.umkc.edu The Associate of Arts degree (A.A.) at JCCC is a general transfer degree and partners well with the first two years of most bachelor degree programs. Students pursuing the A.A. may select courses that satisfy both the degree requirements and lower division requirements for a bachelor s degree at four-year institutions. The 33 hours of electives within the A.A. allows students to complete additional general education and lower division courses required for specific majors. The A.A. degree requires completion of 63 credit hours, the maximum number of hours from a community college that will be applied toward a bachelor s degree at most four-year schools. Meeting with a JCCC counselor is strongly recommended for selection of appropriate courses. General UMKC Transfer Admission Requirements * 2.0 or higher cumulative GPA * Credit/no credit (Pass/Fail) may only be applied to elective coursework and will not apply towards UMKC s general education core or major requirements * Equivalent courses can be repeated but all grades will be averaged for GPA calculation purposes and students will only receive credit for one attempt * Full transfer admission requirements can be found at Apply online at **NOTE** Completing an Associate of Arts degree or the Associate of Science in General Sciences at JCCC will satisfy all lower level general education requirements at UMKC. It is highly recommended that students complete the Associate degree prior to transfer to UMKC whenever possible. Updated: 10/17 1
2 UMKC College of Arts & Sciences (CAS) Requirements (all students): General Differences between B.A., B.L.A. and B.S. Degrees: The CAS degree requirements for the B.A. and B.L.A. degrees are the same with one exception: The B.L.A. degree requires 18 hours each in 3 divisions and a minor, not a major. The CAS degree requirements for the B.A., B.L.A., and B.S. are the same with two exceptions: The B.S. degree requires a minimum of 6 hours in math and science The B.S. degree does not require any foreign language. In all instances, students should contact the appropriate department concerning its requirements for a B.S. degree. Additional details may be found in the UMKC catalog at catalog.umkc.edu Overall College of Arts and Sciences Degree Requirements at UMKC 1. Six (6) credit hours in the Division of CAS. 2. Six (6) credit hours in the Division of CAS (SPD 121, ENGL 121, ENGL 122, and foreign language courses at third level or below are not eligible to fulfill this requirement). 3. Six (6) credit hours in the Science & Math Division of CAS. NOTE: 1. See table on page 3 for the CAS degree programs identified d by Division. 2. Courses taken to fulfill #1-#3 (CAS requirements) above are to be taken outside of the major department (for B.A. and B.S. degrees). However, if the major requires courses outside of the major department, those courses may count toward the CAS degree requirements. 3. Classes may not be double-counted for both UMKC general education core and CAS degree requirements. 4. Junior/Senior level Writing Intensive Course (not available at a community college). 5. Foreign Language: B.A. and B.L.A. students are required to demonstrate competence at the third semester level of a foreign language. 6. The following additional degree requirements may be fulfilled by courses from either the UMKC General Education Core or the CAS Degree Requirements: 1. College Algebra, Math for Liberal Arts or any 200 level or higher l math course 2. Laboratory Science experience 3. Missouri Constitution course 2
