SUMMARY This teaching post covers both Undergraduate and Postgraduate Medical Education incorporating simulation based education and research surrounding education and patient safety behaviours/skills. It will involve taking a lead role in education and patient safety research projects related to education, Human Factors, patient safety and delivery of safe practice. The post holder will work two days a week for NUH providing undergraduate medical education teaching and three days a week for TSCSC, supporting the centres programme of work around simulation, patient safety education, human factors teaching and research.
2 The post would be ideal for either a post MRCP/MCEM Core Trainee or a mid-scheme StR seeking to establish a specialist career in Medicine or Emergency Medicine with a special interest in medical education. The Department fully supports all Teaching Fellows in developing the undergraduate course and Fellows will their present work at NUH s annual Undergraduate Medical Education Conference, where best and innovative practice is shared. You will have office space, desk and PC. You will be working alongside other Teaching Fellows in other specialties and will be able to work together on projects and share good practice. All courses have administrative support. Personal teaching skills will be developed and improved via the undergraduate teaching commitments and within the simulation centre, along with the ability to appraise and advance these skills in colleagues. The post holder will develop and extend their knowledge and practice in research methodology (both qualitative and quantitative). It is expected that activity undertaken whilst in post will result in presentations to local, regional, national and international groups or meetings, and also publication of abstracts and research papers. Whilst in post there will be the opportunity to study for the Masters Medical Science in Medical Education at the University of Nottingham with funding available to support up to 50% of the costs. There are no clinical commitments as part of this post. However, the post holder may wish to arrange a clinical component with a relevant department at QMC. This should be negotiated and agreed in advance with the relevant Supervisor to ensure that the post holder can fulfil the requirements of this post Undergraduate Medical Education Two Days Two days of the post will be dedicated to teach Undergraduate Medical students based either at QMC or City Campus. The postholder will work alongside the other Teaching Fellow Posts at either QMC OR City Campus and the Undergraduate Medical Education Manager to both deliver teaching to medical students at NUH and also to develop new initiatives when teaching students. Listed below are some of the areas that we expect the Post Holder to be involved with please note that this teaching does not all take place at same time but gives you a flavour of the variety of teaching that is delivered. 1. To deliver teaching on the CP1 and CP3 course both during the AMU week and also weekly teaching to each medicine firm. 2. To deliver teaching on the two week CP1 induction course this will involve lecturebased and patient-based sessions.
3 3. To provide teaching on the Early Clinical Experience Course (14 x Year 1/2 hospital visits). 4. Provide reasonable cover where appropriate for the other Teaching Fellow (and vice versa.) 5. Contribute to the one week revision course for CP3 students. 6. Contribute to the clinical assessment of students during the formal CP1 and CP3 competency assessments (MACCS Assessments Mandatory Assessment of Core Clinical Skills) and patient workshops across the clinical course. 7. Support Simulated teaching across the undergraduate clinical course in CP1, CP2 & CP3. 8. Contribute to the formal examination of these students including OSCE and Long Case examinations, writing exam questions and contributing to a database of patients suitable for these examinations. 9. Take part in one-to-one tutoring of students re-sitting their exams and provide onetwo-one teaching support for struggling students. 10. Contribute to the Critical Illness course when appropriate. 11. Contribute in a strategic sense to the evolution of teaching for all the above groups. These tasks will involve administration and coordination, as well as hands-on delivery of teaching. Personal Professional Development Undertake the taught M.Med.Sci (Clinical Education) Course at the University of Nottingham during the two years part time (50% of the costs of the course to be met by the successful applicant). The Trust will pay 50% of the course for all EU applicants Carry out relevant educational research during the second year. Take an active part if training sessions run by UMED. Present work at local, regional and national meetings such as ASME and ASPiH Educational Research During the two years, the post holder will undertake the taught M.Med.Sci (Clinical Education) Course as part time postgraduate student, which constitutes 24 days contact time at the University of Nottingham plus reading and writing up of assignments and dissertation. 50% of the costs of the M Med Sci will need to be met by the successful applicant and 50% by the Trust for all EU applicants. Lines of Management The post-holder s Clinical Educational Supervisor will be Professor Bryn Baxendale. Undergraduate Medical Education they will be accountable to Nick Kythreotis as regards the delivery and organisation of their Undergraduate Medical Education Teaching. Trent Simulation & Clinical Skills Centre Three days per week Duties of the Post 1. Education Research Project
4 The post involves taking a lead role in the development and achievement of an education based research project related to patient safety and the management of risk and delivery of safe practice. A novel project will be identified with the post s supervisor that links with TSCSC key priorities. You will also be expected to support pre-existing educational research projects in the centre such as the regional safety course for medical trainees (EMPSIS) as well as actively contribute to the design, development, piloting and evaluation of courses including collection and analysis of data. You will present at local, regional, national and international groups or meetings, and write abstracts and research papers for publication. 2. Teaching You will participate in the teaching of new and existing courses in the simulation and clinical skills environment. This will include specialty specific and multiprofessional groups at both undergraduate and postgraduate/post qualified levels. Personal teaching skills will be developed and improved, along with understanding and experience of practice based learning and competency assessment and evaluation tools. There will also be the opportunity to develop skills and experience in Human Factors, non-technical skills, crisis resource management, communication and briefing /debriefing individuals and teams working alongside experienced faculty in the Simulation Centre. 3. Research/Journal meetings The post holder will be responsible for running and contributing to regular departmental research and journal club meetings for clinical skills and simulation teaching, patient safety and maintain an up to date database of research activities including Human Factors Forum. Support and supervise medical (or other) students undertaking projects in conjunction with TSCSC including preparation and presentation of findings at local, regional, national meetings and publications. 4. Clinical Commitments There are no clinical commitments as part of this post. However, the post holder may wish to arrange a clinical component with a relevant department at QMC. This should be negotiated and agreed in advance with the Director, TSCSC to ensure that the post holder can fulfil the requirements of this post. 5. Professional Development The Fellow will attend the TSCSC Faculty Course which is a fundamental component of our faculty development programme. You will be supported to apply for membership of the Academy of Medical Educators.
5 During time in post, you will have the opportunity to develop advanced abilities in clinical skills and simulation-based learning. Specific knowledge to underpin these competences will be gained by accessing information within TSCSC and from library and online resources, related to (amongst others): Education Theory Simulation-based learning and supporting technologies Cognitive Psychology relevant to clinical performance Crisis Resource Management Human Factors for Patient Safety Assessment and evaluation methodology Opportunity will be provided to shadow the Centre Director or Centre Manager when attending meetings to discuss strategic or operational developments pertinent to TSCSC either within NUH, the East Midlands region, or nationally. MANAGEMENT ARRANGEMENTS The post holder will report to the Director of the Trent Simulation and Clinical Skills Centre and work alongside members of the TSCSC team for the delivery of the teaching programme. If applicable, clinical supervision to be determined depending on the clinical component of the post. MAIN CONDITIONS OF SERVICE The post holder is expected to be aware of local policies and procedures and take note of the standing orders and financial instructions of the NUH NHS Trust. The post is covered by the Medical and Dental Terms and Conditions of Service. Salary The salary payable is in accordance with the rates currently in force. Incremental Credit may be awarded for previous NHS service and / or overseas service. Annual Leave The Teaching Fellow shall be entitled to a minimum annual leave at the rate of 27 days per annum or as per their current level of CT/SpR level of training. Tenure The post is offered for either 12 or 24 months, starting August Medical Clearance The offer of appointment is subject to the post holder undergoing a medical examination. Qualification & Experience The post holder must have full registration with the GMC. As stated above, applicants at either CT or SpR level will be considered on equal merit. It is no longer a requirement of employment within the NHS that medical staff be registered with a Medical Insurance
6 organisation.
