There couldn t be a better time to consider a career in early childhood education or to upgrade your current qualifications to degree level. There is currently a shortage of early childhood teachers with a four year bachelor s degree. The Australian Government has implemented its universal access in childhood education initiative, leading to significant growth in the Australian early childhood sector. Avondale teaching graduates have a reputation for being some of the most capable teachers in Australia. In 2011, 90 percent of students were offered a full-time teaching position straight after graduation. Avondale also has strong industry connections with various primary schools, preschools and day care centres throughout Lake Macquarie and Australia, giving you access to quality work experience opportunities throughout your degree. Avondale s Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood)(Birth 5 years) is also offered via distance education (conditions apply), allowing you to study at a time that suits you - after work, on weekends, or while the kids are at school. The Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood)(Birth 5 years) degree is designed to provide Early Childhood qualifications in the context of Christian values. This degree not only prepares students to enter the teaching profession in an early childhood centre, preschool or infant school, but also prepares students to be responsible and ethical leaders in an age where children need positive Christian role models. 3 BACHELOR OF EDUCATION EARLY CHILDHOOD (BIRTH 5 YEARS) Details CRICOS code: Locations Offered: Degree Type: Study Mode: Course Duration: Accreditation A Lake Macquarie Campus Undergraduate On campus and distance education (with yearly three day residential school for distance students) Four years full-time (or part-time equivalent) The BEd Early Childhood (Birth 5 years) is accredited by the Tertiary Education Quality and Standards Agency (TEQSA) and the Australian Children s Education & Care Quality Authority(ACECQA). Overview Avondale s Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) (Birth 5 years) is available on campus for the first four semesters and then online only for semester s five to eight, or entirely online. This course is offered completely online for those currently working in childcare (only), making it even easier for students to fit study around their work and personal life. Entry Requirements DIRECT ENTRY: ATAR of (or equivalent e.g. OP of 17 or less) English Language Proficiency Requirement for Teachers in NSW. International students require an International English Language Test Score (IELTS) of at least 8.0 for speaking and listening prior to being employed as graduate teachers in New South Wales. 4 Decisions on alternative pathways to admission are made by the Academic Registrar in consultation with the relevant Course Convenor and other appropriate personnel. Alternative admission may be obtained by one or more of the following methods: Previous post-secondary qualifications Special Tertiary Admissions Test (STAT) Special Consideration (disadvantaging factors impacting on Year 12 results) Detailed information on alternative admission is available from Avondale s Admission Enquiry Centre or in the Undergraduate Handbook. Pages from the handbook can be downloaded at ENTRY VIA DISTANCE MODE If you wish to complete this degree fully in distance mode then you must be employed on at least a part-time basis in an early childhood education and care setting or a school setting, for the duration of your enrolment as a student at Avondale College. Where it Could Take You Early Childhood graduates leave with the skills to gain employment in the following areas: Early Childhood teacher Day care centre pedagogical leader or nominated supervisor (after one year of teaching) Family day care coordinator Graduates leave qualified to teach in church, private, independent and community based early childhood education and care services in Australia. In addition to education-related careers, teachers often find careers in the corporate world where organisational and relationship skills are valued by employers. Textbook and Other Costs You can expect to spend approximately AUD$50 to $350 on textbooks, lecture notes and excursions per semester depending on the texts specified for particular units and the location of professional experience. 5 Course Structure The BEd (EC) (Birth-5 yrs) is composed of 32 units (192 credit points) of study over eight semesters. All units are worth six credit points (unless otherwise specified). Title of course of study: Bachelor of Education Early Childhood Name of award (under AHEGS conventions): Bachelor of Education Early Childhood (Birth 5 years) Course structure: The course structure is based on eight semesters (each of 13 weeks duration), with four subjects taught in each semester. It comprises: 32 compulsory subjects of six credit points each over four years F/T, or P/T Equivalent (192 credit points) that prepare graduates to meet the Australian Qualifications Framework Level 7 and the AITSL Graduate Teacher Standards experience requirements embedded within the various EDEP units total 95 days To qualify for award of the degree of Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) (Birth 5 years) a candidate will accrue 192 credit points, which will include a satisfactory completion of the professional experience requirements of the units in the course. Content of the course of study The course has four areas of study: Curriculum Studies Christian Education Studies Education Studies Experience studies Component Curriculum Studies Christian Studies Education Studies Description Credit points EDCE Codes focus on the development of practices and processes of teaching the play based, intentional, socially just and inclusive early childhood curriculum. They also allow the pre-service educator, to develop familiarity with curriculum framework documents for Australian early childhood settings. CHST Codes reflect the unique philosophy of Avondale College and convey in a systematic and intentional manner the religious, ethical and social justice values of Avondale s own faith tradition, the Seventh-day Adventist Church. There is a particular emphasis on the purposes and practices of Christian education. EDUC Codes provide a theoretical base to the teaching and learning process while contributing to the development of attributes of caring, competence, commitment, critical-reflective skills and Christian values. Experience Elective Subjects Specialisations Rules of progression EDEP Codes address the strategies, skills and practices involved in teaching in an early childhood setting and provide opportunities for continues professional experience, offering increasing responsibility within a variety of settings for periods of two to three weeks at a time. Pages from the handbook can be downloaded at CREDIT TRANSFER AND ADVANCED STANDING Avondale has a formal process for the assessment of transfer credit. Requests for credit on the basis of prior learning or experience must be sent to the Course Convenor, supported by official documentation from the institution or organisation where the prior learning/experience occurred. Documentation will normally be in the form of an original copy of an official academic transcript (in English), supported by unit outlines and any other relevant documentation. The Faculty or School Learning and Teaching Committee decide on credit to be granted on the basis of prior learning. For more information visit ENTRY REQUIREMENTS FOR INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS Overseas applicants will have their qualifications assessed by the Admission Enquiry Centre. Overseas applicants are also required to satisfy Australian Government visa requirements. For a comprehensive list of English and academic entry requirements, visit STATE REGISTRATION REQUIREMENTS FOR TEACHERS Endorsement of Avondale s Bachelor of Teaching and Education by the New South Wales Government Institute of Teachers Advisory Panel qualifies graduates for employment as teachers in the NSW State public system. Other Australian state governments have different requirements for teachers to become registered to teach in state schools, but normally registration in one state is considered as meeting the requirements for other states. Information concerning certification requirements is available from the Faculty Dean. You are advised to familiarise yourself with these requirements, as responsibility for registration as a teacher rests with you. SELF-DISCLOSURE AND CRIMINAL RECORD CHECK Current legislation requires that all students who will be working with children or young people must take responsibility to make an online application for a NSW Working With Children Check Children-Check/Volunteers-and-students and complete the Child Protection Awareness Training. 9 P a g e

10 All students enrolled in education degrees must complete the above and evidence of completion must be sent or given to the Experience Placement Officer. This will cover all local school visits undertaken as part of education courses and school placements in New South Wales schools. All students who undertake placements in states other than NSW must also complete a separate Working with Children Check relevant to the state in which they are doing their placement. The placement officer will help with this process. Pre-service teachers must take a copy of the Working with Children Check form/card with them to their placement school. This applies to pre-service teachers doing Experience placements in all Australian schools. DELIVERY APPROACHES Methods of teaching and learning include: Distance education (includes three day residential in July school holidays) Lectures and tutorials Field trips Experimental laboratories Practical design sessions Oral and audio visual presentations Assignments Problem-based learning Observations and professional experience ASSESSMENT METHODS A wide range of methods are used to assess your performance. These include: Theory and practical assignment work Practical experience Tests Assignments End of semester examinations FEES For current information on tuition, on-campus accommodation and meal costs, visit FINANCIAL ASSISTANCE Commonwealth Supported Places (CSP) If you are an Australian or New Zealand citizen, or a permanent humanitarian visa holder, you may be eligible for a CSP government subsidised tuition. Students who hold a CSP pay a student contribution amount for each unit of study at a lower fee rate than a full domestic tuition fee. Australian citizens have the option of: Paying student contribution up-front and receiving a 10% discount when paying $500 or more of the contributions for units with the same census date; Deferring the payment of all or part of the student contribution through HECS-HELP. No repayment until income exceeds the compulsory threshold (which is adjusted each year).
