The proposal was approved by the Undergraduate Studies Committee on December 9, 016. The proposal with changes, rationale and updates is attached. There are no negative budgetary implications to the programs, and no additional funds or human resources are necessary for these changes at this time. The administration of the department fully supports this proposal. If you have any questions or need additional information, do not hesitate to contact me. Sincerely, Ruth McKoy Lowery, Ph.D. Associate Chair and Professor Department of Teaching and Learning
3 College of Education and Human Ecology Department of Teaching and Learning December 19, 016 College of Education and Human Ecology Curriculum Committee Attn: Sarah A. Odum, MA, Curriculum Coordinator College of Education and Human Ecology Academic Affairs 17 Arps Hall 195 N High Street Columbus, OH 10 Dear College Curriculum Committee, I am writing on behalf of the members of the Department of Teaching and Learning Undergraduate Studies Committee who have unanimously approved the proposed changes to the B.S.Ed. Science and Mathematics: Chemistry, Life, Earth, and Physics programs. Please note that our approval hinged on the commitment of the departmental administration to include at least one GTA, among those who work with the EDUTL 5005, who is developing or has achieved expertise in both STEM education and issues of equity and diversity. This will not have financial implications, but will instead be concerning allicating funds differently. Our department proposes the program be effective as of Summer Semester 017. In conjunction with this letter, Dr. Ruth Lowery, Associate Chair of the Department of Teaching and Learning, has provided a letter concerning any resources that this program will require. It is our hope that you will be able to review the proposed program in your next meeting. Please let us know if anything further is needed. 4 1 November 016 College of Education and Human Ecology Department of Teaching and Learning Science Education 85A Arps Hall 195 N High Street Columbus, OH Phone Irving.8@osu.edu Dear Curriculum Committee: I am writing to describe the revisions made to our BSEd in Physics Education, BSEd in Chemistry Education. BSEd in Life Sciences Education, and BSEd in Earth Sciences Education programs. These plans provide pathways for undergraduate students to complete the courses needed to qualify for a teaching license from the Ohio Department of Education to teach science at the grades 7-1 levels. These undergraduate pathways to teacher licensure were developed at the time of semester conversion. We have recently reviewed the programs and have made a number of revisions. The general rationale for these changes is based on lowering the number of required credit hours so that students may graduate in four years. Changes involve removing some courses, substituting other similar courses with lower credit hour demands, identifying courses that can serve both programmatic needs as well as general education requirements, and increasing course options where possible to give students greater flexibility in completing the program. Some changes are consistent across all four of the science discipline programs, and others are specific to a particular science content area. In addition, a second rationale for the requested changes is to better position our BSED graduates for the job market. Each modified program sheet has a second page that lists recommendations for courses that the student may choose in order to better position them to complete the science requirements for a dual science teaching license soon after completing their single science license BSED program. This advisory sheet intends to help students use their general education and content course selections to complete as many of these required courses as possible in order to shorten their time to obtain a dual license. Experience in our Master in Education program indicates that successful candidates with a dual license have a better chance of finding employment in Ohio. Principals prefer to hire applicants with dual or integrated licensure. The attached notes pages describe both the changes and the rationale for the changes in each of these four programs. The notes are organized under the general headings: Clarifying Wording; General Education/Moved placement of courses on program sheet; Professional Pre-major Requirements; Content; Major; and Addition of dual licensure course recommendations Mathematics Education partners with us in Assessment, Cognition and Learning, and Field Experience Seminars. Faculty are needed for instruction of all courses and we require specialized and specifically equipped classrooms for science and mathematics education courses. These specific facilities are already provided and maintained by our department. Sincerely, Karen E. Irving, Ph.D.
5 Chemistry Clarifying Wording 1. Admission Process (bottom left corner): added to the program sheet. Previously, no information was detailed.. Cumulative GPA and OAE requirement for graduation (bottom of table): this would be a change from a requirement only for the major coursework to the entirety of the program. a. Previously the statement required a.75 for the major requirements only (see subscript 6). It read: Cumulative grade point average of.75 required at time of graduation in order to be recommended for state of Ohio teacher licensure. Students will take Praxis II exams by the start of student teaching. b. Change to Cumulative grade point average of.75 and the successful completion of the Ohio Assessment for Educators examinations are required at time of graduation in order to be recommended for state of Ohio teacher licensure.. Added statement concerning content.75 GPA required (subscript L). Cumulative grade point average of.75 required at time of graduation in these courses (and overall) in order to be recommended for state of Ohio teacher licensure. Course grades transferred from other institutions will also be included in these GPA calculations. General Education/ Moved placement of courses on program sheet Overall Rationale: These courses are required content for the program and fall under the.75 GPA requirement. This clarified to students which courses will fall under their content requirements for licensure. Courses impacted are: 1. Previous requirement: STAT 150 or 150 (GE Data Analysis) a. Proposed: Replacing with it with CHEM 10 (under content requirement). Meets GE Data Analysis, reduces number of total credits.. GE Social Science recommendations were removed to allow more flexibility for student. Removed GE Culture and Ideas due to addition of ESEPHL 10 in pre-major requirements. Removed GE Open Option due to pre-major and content courses fulfilling this requirement. 5. BIOL and CHEM 110 and 10 requirements (GE Sciences) now listed under content due to clarifying licensure requirements (see subscript L) Professional Pre-major Requirements 1. Previous requirement: ESEPSY 501 a. Proposed: ESEPSY 501 or HDFS 0. Adds flexibility for students, while still meeting content requirement.. Previous requirement: ESCFE 80 a. Proposed: Change to ESEPHL is a GE course, which lessens required total hours and covers required content for licensure requirements.. Previous Requirement: ESCE 189 for -5 credits a. Changed to credits only, which more accurately reflects requirements. Page 1 of
6 Chemistry (Continued) Content 1. Previous requirement: EARTHSC 1100 a. Proposed: EARTHSCI 1100, 1110, 111 or 111. Adds flexibility for students, while still meeting content requirement.. Previous requirement: BIOLOGY 1101 or 111 a. Proposed: BIOL 1101, 111, or 111. Adds flexibility for students, while still meeting content requirement.. Previous requirement: EARTHSC 1100 a. Proposed: EARTHSCI 1100, 1110, 111 or 11. Adds flexibility for students, while still meeting content requirement.. Removed CHEM 550, MATH 15 and PHYSICS 00. Rationale: courses not needed for licensure and it lessen the total credit hours. Major 1. Deleted EDUTL 57: Reduce number of credits. Not require for licensure. Deleted EDUTL 576: Reduce number of credits. Not require for licensure. Content required in provided in spring field experience.. Replaced 57 with EDUTL 5005: 5005 is a core departmental requirement provides similar content to 57.. EDUTL 189 increased by 1 credit: Accommodates a seminar during each placement changed from to 5 credits. Rationale: Previously students were instructed to complete 599 course ( credits). This course has been eliminated, but the content will be provided in 57. This course change request is pending program approval and is already entered into curriculum.osu.edu. This course is also part of the Woodrow Wilson grant. Addition of dual licensure option Added the option of dual licensure. The dual discipline license provides students with a second content area, which is more marketable in the field. The list provided recommends coursework that will allow students to utilize overlap with GE or content requirements as much as possible. The College of Education and Human Ecology s Office of Educator Preparation, in conjunction with T&L Academic services, already has a process to recommend students to the Ohio Department of Education to obtaining dual content licensure, as it is already available in our Master of Education program. 17 Life Sciences Clarifying Wording 1. Removed STAT 150 as option due to prerequisites for content. BIOL 111, 111, and CHEM 1110, 110 (GE Sciences) now listed under content due to clarifying licensure requirements (see subscript L). GE Social Science recommendations were removed to allow more flexibility for student. Removed GE Culture and Ideas due to addition of ESEPHL 10 in pre-major requirements 5. Removed Open Option due to pre-major and content courses fulfilling this requirement. Professional Pre-major Requirements 1. Life Sciences Page 1 of
18 Life Science (Continued) Content Major 1. Removed Math 115: Reduce number of credits. Not require for licensure. Removed EARTHSCI 11 as requirement: Reduce number of credits. Not require for licensure.. Previous requirement: EARTHSCI 111 and 11 a. Changed to only one course required and added more options: EARTHSCI 1100, 1110, 111, or 11. Covers the same content and fulfills licensure requirement.. Previous requirement: PHSYICS 150 and 151 a. Proposed requirement: PHYSICS 100 or 150 and PHYSICS 101 or 151. This removes the calculus-based physics, if the student is not pursing an additional physical science license. Students that will pursue this dual license can still complete 150/151 to meet the requirement. 5. Removed CHEM 10 as an option, students must complete 510: More in depth understanding of the principles of organic chemistry. 6. Added MICROBIOL 000 or 100. Rationale: due to licensure requirements 7. Added EEOB 10, 50, 0, or 590 L Biodiversity of Ohio - Plants, Human Physiology, Focused Study of Ecology Mammals, and Evolution or Ichthyology (Stone Lab). Rationale: licensure requirement to provide students with a specialty area. 1.
