4 INTRODUCTION TO THE PRELIMINARY CALIFORNIA MULTIPLE SUBJECT TEACHING CREDENTIAL The preliminary multiple subject teaching credential is a license to provide instruction in a California public school setting. The multiple subject credential is a Kindergarten through 12th grade authorization that authorizes teaching in a self-contained classroom setting. That means you are teaching several different subjects to one group of pupils each school day. This setting is most commonly found in elementary schools. Our credential program meets Senate Bill 2042 (SB2042) standards for English Learner instruction. This means that upon completion of the program you will be authorized to provide instruction to students for whom English is not their first language. Our program is fully accredited by the Commission on Teacher Credentialing. The preliminary credential is a 5- year document. The next level credential is called a clear credential and in order to obtain it you must complete an induction program; an advanced on-the-job training program typically provided by the public school districts but also at some universities. If your employment doesn t offer one you may be able to enroll in a university program. Credential Program Student Handbook Multiple Subject Orientation Page 1

22 TEACHING PERFORMANCE ASSESSMENT Assessment of the Teacher Candidate in Student Teaching The Multiple Subject Credential Program has designed a multifaceted system for assessing the degree to which teacher candidates have demonstrated competency in the 13 Teaching Performance Expectations mandated by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing. Components include a Classroom Teaching Profile based on the candidate s teaching and the edtpa in planning, teaching, and assessing students in a literacy environment, and teaching and assessing students in mathematics. Completion of edtpa. Candidates will complete the edtpa that includes planning and teaching a learning segment and assessing students in the area of literacy. In addition, teacher candidates complete a mathematics assessment task during student teaching. Cost of edtpa The edtpa has two kinds of fees*: Submitting the first attempt at the edtpa to Pearson for scoring will cost you $300. If your edtpa does not pass, you may submit new attempts for scoring at $100 per Task (up to $300 for a full re-attempt). The edtpa are submitted on a commercial online platform called TaskStream. A TaskStream account currently costs $42 for two semesters. *which are set by Pearson and subject to change at any time. **TaskStream, too, may change its fees during the course of your program. For more information, go to edtpa.aacte.org Credential Program Student Handbook Multiple Subject Orientation Page 19

Questions about fulfilling your bachelor s degree requirements must be directed to an advisor in the Liberal Studies Department. Department of Elementary Education At times you may need to consult with someone in Elementary Education. Here are a few reasons you may need to contact the Elementary Education Office directly: Questions regarding class scheduling To add or drop classes Registration difficulties Faculty contact Student teaching questions Questions regarding the Teaching Performance Assessment Credential Progress Reports Soon after admission, you can expect to receive a Credential Progress Report. This is your official university record which includes all the courses and requirements for the preliminary credential. It is recommended that you review this report soon after you have received it and contact a credential advisor if you have trouble interpreting it or if you note any discrepancies. You may refer back to this document throughout your program. You may also contact a credential advisor to have an updated report printed for you later in your program.
