Michael Quinn Patton, Utilization-Focused Evaluation, St. Paul, MN Reflections About the Theme: Reconciling Equity and Accountability: Evaluation in an Unjust World The U.N.-sponsored International Year of Evaluation ended December 31, 2015, even as the practice of evaluation continued its global expansion and development. Recent events in the U.S. and around the world have pointed to the enormous challenges humankind faces and the routine injustice of the circumstances in which so many people live. In light of the complexity and seeming intractability of many problems, evaluators may begin to question the likely influence of their work. Programs that tackle social problems are regularly evaluated using different starting points. On the one hand, evaluators

2 whose practice is animated by social justice concerns fairness, impartiality, an end to discrimination and prejudice may seek opportunities to evaluate such programs using an equity frame. On the other hand, those who fund evaluations may apply an accountability frame in commissioning studies: What were the outcomes? What appeared to work in that setting? How efficiently? At what cost? In constructing this year s schedule for training, we were again reminded of the multifaceted social systems within which we practice. We invite you to join us for the 21th Annual MESI Spring Training as together we seek, both as individuals and as members of a growing professional community, to develop competencies that will help evaluators embrace both equity and accountability issues in the 21st century. Registration Online Registration: Use online registration when registering a single person and paying with a credit card. Each registration requires a login ID and password to identify the user. If registering multiple participants for an organization, each registrant will need to provide a login ID and password to the person doing the registration process in your organization. Otherwise, please use the paper form. Group registrations: (5 or more from a single organization) can be done online by selecting group registration on the options list. An individual login ID is still needed for selecting this option. After registering online you will receive a registration confirmation and a receipt from dorshelp@umn.edu. You may want to check your spam folder if you do not see these s in your inbox. Paper Registration: Use the paper registration form when registering multiple people (without a single login), registering someone other than yourself, or if there is a need to have the registration fee billed to your organization. Cancellation Policy: If you need to cancel your registration, a refund, minus $40 cancellation fee, will be issued if you cancel by February 22, Cancellations after this date will not be eligible for a refund. Hotel Lodging Convenient lodging for out-of-town participants is available at the Radisson Hotel Roseville. Participants are responsible for making their own lodging reservations. The nightly rate is $9.00 plus tax - this special rate is only available if you make your reservation by February 23, To receive the special conference rate, please identify yourself as a participant of the MESI Spring Training. Hotel space is limited; we strongly encourage you to make your hotel reservations as soon as possible. The hotel will provide complimentary shuttle service for participants to and from the Continuing Education and Conference Center.
