1 H U D S O N ' S B A Y H I G H S C H O O L The Eagle October 2016 Hudson s Bay High October 2016 Eagle News 1601 E. McLoughlin Blvd. Vancouver, WA Main Office: Hello Eagles. We are off to a great start here at Bay! Teachers have been working on creating a positive learning culture to engage students in their classes all year. Counselors have also been working diligently to meet with students to check in, adjust schedules, and balance class sizes as needed. We are also continuing to deliver ipads to students as well as make sure Bay students are completing all the Boot Camp Lessons in Digital U. Teachers and students will continue to learn how to best use these devices to support their learning at Bay. Our tutorial program is underway and staff continue to have conversations with students about their learning and grades. During tutorial time, teachers and students have many different choices to best meet their needs. Teachers are able to collaborate to best meet student needs while students rotate periods they are in tutorial to be able to work with each of their 6 teaches on a regular basis. We shared a lot of information with you in our August/September newsletter, so I just want to remind you in case you might have missed a few of these important items: Regular school attendance is critical to student success. Please assist us in monitoring your student s attendance and encourage them to attend classes every day. A day of missed instruction is not easily made up. As in past years, there will be sixteen Mondays that will be 1-hour early release days. These early release days will be used by all teachers to work together to improve the educational experience for our students. A bell schedule and calendar for the early release dates and other important dates are included in the newsletter. We are continuing our PBIS work this year and will focus on consistently teaching and implement the Bay Way. More information about what these expectations look like and our plan for roll-out is in this newsletter and we will continue to give you updates through-out the year along with opportunities to provide input. We have few events coming up that I hope to see you all at: Open House, October 5th, 2016 There will be time to meet the teachers as well as different informational sessions to visit throughout the evening as well as a light dinner. Parent Conferences, October 20th & 21st, 2016 Details on how to sign up will be coming out soon If you attend the Open House, sign-ups will be available then Have a great fall and I look forward to seeing you all soon. 6 Our Mission The mission of Hudson's Bay High School is to create lifelong learners and responsible, compassionate, literate citizens by melding the resources of students, staff, parents, and community. Our Traits of Focus Our Bay community developed five traits that align with our mission statement that we believe students and staff should strive to exhibit. We teach, recognize, and value the following: Greetings, Eagles! At the start of the school year, students participated in discussions and activities about our Bay Way Traits of Focus-- Community, Ownership, Critical Thinking, Perseverance, and Empathy. All members of the school community- from staff to students-strive to exhibit these traits. Staff and students strive to exhibit these traits at Bay because doing so improves our school culture, the health and happiness of all members of the school community, and benefits students in both academic and non-academic ways. Students who display any of the Bay Way Traits of Focus throughout their school day are eligible to receive a Bay Way Ticket which will enter them into a drawing by grade level to receive prizes. This month, Maximino Rosales Hernandez, Tyrehl Vaivao, Joseph Gudgel, and Harrison Holt were our winners for embodying the Bay Way and being a good example to their school community! You can find out more about the HBHS Bay Way by going to the school's website: bay.vansd.org and clicking on HBHS Info. There, you will find a link to The Bay Way. 9 From the Prevention/Intervention Specialist s Corner Project Success at Hudson s Bay High School! Hudson s Bay High School is continuing Project SUCCESS for the school year. This program is funded through our state s marijuana tax dollars. This program has existed for a couple of years at both Hudson s Bay High School and Discovery Middle School. The goals of the program are to help prevent and reduce alcohol, tobacco, and drug use, and other risky behaviors in order to improve student performance. To accomplish these goals every 9 th grade student has received a four-part Prevention Education Series in their English class, with our Prevention/Intervention Specialist. In addition, every student will have the opportunity to participate in school-wide awareness programs, prevention club, classroom discussion, community awareness activities, and small group and individual meetings. School support groups meet weekly and provide students with the opportunity to learn the skills and self-confidence necessary to make positive choices in their lives. The program will provide alcohol, tobacco, and other drug prevention education and counseling services to students. All information is presented in a confidential setting that allows students to openly discuss the many challenges they face as teenagers. Prevention/ Intervention specialist Susan Peng-Cowan is our Project SUCCESS Counselor at Hudson s Bay High School. If you have any questions, concerns about a student, or are interested in more information about Project SUCCESS, please contact Susan at (360) or susan.peng-cowan@vansd.org THE EAGLE EYE Page 9

28 Hudson s Bay Athletic Grade Check Guidelines WIAA rules state athletes must maintain passing grades in a minimum of: 5 classes in a 5 period class schedule or the equivalent credits (only applies to seniors) 5 classes in a 6 period class schedule or the equivalent credits Running Start Students Equivalent One-5 credit quarter course = one Bay credit Students enrolled in the Running Start program must sign a WIAA Running Stat agreement to be eligible. Alternative Education Equivalent Students enrolled in alternative educational settings must sign an Alternative Education School Agreement and maintain adequate progress toward earning 2.5 credits during the current semester. Note: Student/Athletes may not add, drop or change classes to gain or remain eligible. Grade Checks The Hudson s Bay Athletic Department will run weekly grade checks to ensure athletes are meeting the required WIAA academic standards. Live grades will be pulled weekly and then distributed to coaches who will be responsible for communicating grade issues with athletes. Any student not meeting the required academic standards will be placed on academic probation starting the Monday following the week in which grades were pulled. An ineligible athlete can regain eligibility by completing an academic progress check form documenting they meet the WIAA standards and returning it to the business office. Falsifying a grade report may result in an athlete s removal from school sponsored athletics for up to one calendar year. Example: Monday: Business Office pulls grades and shares with coaches. Tuesday: Coaches communicate with student/athletes about grade issues. Tuesday through the following Monday: Student/Athletes talk with teachers and identify ways to improve grades. Next, Athletes work on the necessary school work. Then Student/Athletes bring up grades. Finally, Student/Athletes take academic progress check form to all teachers and return the form to the business office and their coach. The athlete in this case would remain eligible for competition. Following Monday: A student/athlete not passing 5 classes for a second consecutive week is immediately ineligible for competition until they can document otherwise. Note: Teachers are not required to grade work immediately. If an athlete turns work in late he/she must give the teacher a reasonable amount of time to correct and update grades.
