4 To All BA Students September 2018 Welcome On behalf of Rob Shillaker, BA Programme leader, welcome to the BA (Hons.) in Theological Studies degree programme here at the Highland Theological College (HTC), for 2018/19. We also welcome students who are studying non-theological courses provided by other UHI Academic Partners. This Welcome Pack is a short guide for students, full details of the BA (Hons.) can be found on the HTC UHI website in the BA Student Programme Handbook We trust that you will find the course personally rewarding and intellectually stimulating. All the staff at HTC will work towards making your time with us an enjoyable and fulfilling experience. Kathryn Stewart is the Registry Officer who deals with admission to the course and also the upkeep of your student record as you progress year-to-year. 5 Induction We are expecting and looking forward to meeting you at induction. This is a key date in the academic calendar as it covers important information for new students in particular and brings together the HTC community. It also enables the HTC Registry Officer to record that you have started your studies for the new academic year. You should therefore make every effort to attend and inform Registry at htcadmissions@uhi.ac.uk of any reasons that might prevent this. Induction days are held at the start of each semester. First semester s will be held in HTC Paisley on Tuesday 4th September, 2018 and in HTC Dingwall on Monday 10 th September, Both days will start at 9.15am and will finish around 3.30pm. The timetable for the day will be ed closer to the date. Please htcadmissions@uhi.ac.uk to let us know if you are able to attend. UHI MyDay Student Portal 2

6 MyDay is our university student portal. A single login will give you access to your Virtual Learning Environment (VLE), your UHI Records and your account. You will also find links to the Rebus library catalogue, free software downloads, IT help, local support, news and what s going on in and around HTC and UHI. You can download the MyDay app from the Apple or Android store. This is also where you will complete the online enrolment process when it becomes available to you. IT Requirements You will require access to a PC/Laptop with internet access for your studies. If you are a distance learner your PC/Laptop should have the minimum specification of a camera, microphone and be able to support Cisco Spark software which you will find under Free Stuff on UHI MyDay. Student User Account You will receive and with an allocated personal UHI user ID and password. You will use this to log onto UHI MyDay, student portal where you can access your student profile and s. All communications will be sent to this address only. Please remember to check it regularly all year round. Enrolment All students undertaking study in session 2018/19 MUST complete the On-line Enrolment process. This will give you access to the course materials. On-line Enrolment is now open for new students and will open mid July for returning students. Enrolment guidelines are included in this booklet. 11 Feedback Programme Structure/Available Modules Information on the BA in Theological Studies programme structure and available modules is included in this booklet. Full details can be found on the HTC UHI website in the BA Student Programme Handbook If you are choosing your modules across different levels, as occasionally happens, you should check the class timetable to ensure your choices do not clash. Almost all of the Year 1 modules are core to the BA programme. If you are a continuing student, please ensure you are aware of any pre-requisite conditions. Your Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) will be able to assist you with this. Key Learning Resources - Rebus Once you have decided on the module(s) you wish to study, you should wherever possible purchase the core reading books. The core books may or may not be used in the classroom discussions, but they do give additional reading to supplement the class teaching. 8

12 You will find the core, along with the recommended reading list in Rebus, which can be accessed through the Rebus tile on UHI MyDay. The week prior to classes starting, a programme of study will be available on the VLE, which includes the set reading for each week. We have an extensive library in Dingwall and a smaller one in HTC- Paisley where we stock a limited number of core reading books for each module. Our HTC librarian Martin Cameron is extremely helpful and knowledgeable and is on hand to offer any further assistance you may require. Contact Martin Personal Academic Tutor (PAT) You will be allocated a PAT for you time of study here with us. Your PAT is here to assist you with issues relating to your academic studies. The PAT for all new students starting this year is Dr. Innes Visagie, returning students can check out who their PAT is by logging onto UHI MyDay Module Tutor Any questions about the content of a specific module should be addressed to the module lecturer The Semester Timetables indicate who the course lecturers are. Student Support Officer HTC has a Student Support Officer, Cathy Steed. Conference Days Conference and Open Days are held twice a year at HTC Dingwall. This year s Conference Day is on Saturday 27 th October 2018, from 10:30am 4.00pm. and next year s is on Saturday 16 th March We would encourage you to attend the day as it is a great opportunity to meet other students, enjoy worship, fellowship, and some face to face tutoring and teaching. 15

Full-time students will achieve this in an academic year by choosing 3 modules each semester. 19

23 Part-time students will take more than one academic year to complete a full level of study. For example, if studying 3 modules per year (2 in one semester and 1 in the other semester), a level of study will be completed over 2 academic years. Students undertaking more than a full-time complement of modules (120 credits) will normally be charged for the excess modules at the current module fee rate. Course Fees 2018/19 Fees quoted are for each year of registered study, unless otherwise stated. Self-funding students who wish to be registered as part-time can register for a maximum of 80 credits per year, otherwise they will be classified as full time students and charged the relevant fee. 20

24 SAAS pay tuition fees for eligible Scottish domiciled and EU students (see for more information). Other UK students should apply to their Local Education Authority (LEA) for tuition fees support. Students domiciled in England, Wales and Northern Ireland who are eligible for support through the Student Loans Company may apply for a UHI RUK bursary. Contact Barbara Arrangements for payment of student fees should normally be made with our Finance Officer prior to materials being available to students. Students should contact the Finance Officer, Barbara MacPhail with all questions regarding fees and finance. Contact Barbara RUK students studying full time on-campus for four continuous years for an undergraduate honours degree will not be liable for a fee for the final year of study. Postgraduate Research: MPhil/PhD UK/EU Students Full-time 4,260 11,837 International Students Part-time 2,555 7,102 For non-eu UHI students, there is a no increase guarantee for up to four years of continuous full-time study. This means that fees are held at the same level throughout the course. 21
