ORGANISATION CHART: Reports to the Executive Dean of the Faculty of Education and Children s Services. 6. JOB PURPOSE: The Associate Dean is required to support the Executive Dean and Faculty Managers in providing academic leadership and overall management direction within the context of the Faculty Business plan and strategy in relation to:

2 The development of the Faculty portfolio through establishing and enhancing external and internal partnerships to provide for the wider workforce associated with Education and Children s Services. Support for the Executive Dean in all aspects of strategic planning, financial management and deployment of resources. Demonstrate a continually developing personal, professional and academic standing within the field of education and children s services with particular focus on the Professional Programmes, ITE and CPD areas. Deputise for the Executive Dean and/or Deputy Dean as required. 7. BACKGROUND INFORMATION The Faculty of Education & Children s Services has at its core one of the institution s original missions the preparation of students for careers of service. As the Education and Children s Services workforce evolves the Faculty seeks to maintain its role in developing current and future employees in the sector to make a valuable contribution to that workforce. The portfolio of the Faculty has enlarged significantly over the past few years building on a historic base of quality provision in Primary and Secondary initial teacher education (ITE). Undergraduate ITE is currently provided through four-year B.Ed./and three year BA QTS (Hons) degrees for Early Years and Primary specialisms. Postgraduate ITE is delivered through a one-year PGCE in Early Years, Primary or Secondary. All of this entails partnership with over 300 Schools. Additionally we offer HLTA preparation. Within this suite of programmes, School Direct is rapidly becoming an important part of our PGCE delivery. We work with a growing number of School alliances, who have requested an allocation to train and educate future teachers and work closely with the University in the delivery of PGCE programmes. The Faculty also runs both undergraduate and postgraduate routes to QTS for Early Years specialists and a range of education related professional degrees. The Faculty also offers FdAs in Early Years Practice (EYP), Teaching Assistance (TA) and Managing Services for Children and Young People. In collaboration with the Faculty of Health & Social Care, a Foundation Degree, Level 6 BA (Hons) and Level 7 MA in Integrated Working with Children Young People and Families is offered. The CPD programme for practising school teachers ( M level) operates mainly through negotiated modules which are pupil/school focused and aim to have real impact on what happens in the classroom. This is proving to be relevant for and attractive to teachers and has been an expanding aspect of our provision. The Faculty also hosts a number of specialist Masters pathways and an Ed.D. Research and scholarly activity is an important feature of the Faculty s activities and the results of tutor research have been published in books,

3 journals and the Internet. Many members of the Faculty have made presentations at international conferences. The Faculty has 5 Professors, a National Teacher Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Visiting Fellow. The Faculty has organised and hosted successful conferences and is enthusiastic to develop this provision. The successful applicant will bring significant professional subject expertise, experience and enthusiasm to contribute to the development of our students. 8. WORK PERFORMED AND/OR KEY RESULT AREAS 8.1 Communicating Effectively The role holder will be expected to convey complex and conceptual information to a variety of audiences, including students, colleagues and University Committees. This may include teaching, presenting at conferences and the writing of strategic documents. 8.2 Leadership and Working Collaboratively To line manage staff within the Faculty. To act as a member of the Faculty Senior Management Team. 8.3 Liaison and Networking Liaise with colleagues to develop and promote learning and teaching and research across the Faculty. Liaise with internal and external networks to foster collaboration, share ideas and work to enhance the Faculty portfolio and providers. Act as an ambassador to promote the work of the Faculty both nationally and internationally. Contribute to the management of quality within the Faculty and to subjectbased audit or other external forms of assessment. Develop links with external contacts such as other educational bodies, employer, professional bodies and other providers of funding and research initiatives to foster collaboration and generate income as appropriate. 8.4 Delivering a High Quality Standard of Service Responsible for developing service provision that contributes to the delivery of a positive student experience within the Faculty. Take an active role in the Faculty Management Team, assisting the Executive Dean in setting and maintaining standards across the Faculty 8.5 Effective Decision Making Under the delegated authority of the Executive Dean, to take independent decisions impacting across the Faculty as a whole, regarding faculty management, curriculum and collaboration. As an active member of key University committees, collaborate to contribute to decisions that impact across areas of the University.

4 To provide advice and support on e.g. strategic plans, quality assurance, service provision and leadership to enable the Executive Dean to take decisions. 8.6 Planning and Organising Self and Others Responsible for supporting the Executive Dean in staff management, financial setting, expenditure and monitoring and strategic planning across the Faculty. To support the Executive Dean and Faculty Management Group in the development and management of a business plan and budget for the designated area in accordance with the Faculty strategy and University s corporate goals. To exercise line management responsibility, including human resource management and development of the team in accordance with the Faculty strategy and appropriate University policies and procedures. 8.7 Innovation and Improvement (Effective Problem Solving) Actively engage in marketing/promotion/income generation activities by identifying potential market trends and developing strategies to meet them. 8.8 Analysis and Research To undertake subject-specific research as required. 8.9 Sensory and Physical Demands The role holder works in a standard office environment using standard equipment Work Environment The role holder will be accountable to the Executive Dean of the Faculty for the Health and Safety of the students and staff within the Faculty whilst engaged on University business within University premises Pastoral Care and Welfare To be the first point of contact for welfare matters for the staff for whom the role holder has line management responsibility for. To offer support and guidance to staff within the Faculty. Complex personal matters affecting staff/ students may be referred to the Associate Dean in line with University procedures before being referred to the Executive Dean Team Development To induct and train colleagues as required, and to act as a peer mentor. To conduct staff development interviews and performance reviews, setting targets, identifying training needs and ensuring needs are met Teaching and Learning Support Designing and delivering one off lectures or workshops as required; providing feedback on performance.

5 Devising and delivering a series of lectures as part of programme or modules on a long term basis. Responsible, with the Executive Dean, for the long term development and quality of the areas of responsibility. Responsible for the introduction of novel modes of delivery across the full subject area. Assessing students overall performance and overall quality auditing of course provision. 7 UNIVERSITY OF CHESTER FACULTY OF EDUCATION AND CHILDREN S SERVICES ASSOCIATE DEAN (ACADEMIC DEVELOPMENT AND RESOURCES) SALARY SCALE E3, points 53 55, 60,496-64,170 per annum. PROFESSORIAL APPOINTMENT A professorial appointment will be made for a suitably qualified candidate. Professorial Titles Procedure for more information regarding the criteria. Please see CONDITIONS OF APPOINTMENT Permanent contracts will be offered to those candidates who possess both a higher degree and a postgraduate HE teaching qualification/fellowship of the Higher Education Academy. A successful candidate who lacks either will be offered a fixed term contract, pending fulfilment of these conditions. RESIDENCE REQUIREMENT It is a requirement of this post that within 12 months of appointment, the post-holder should live within a 30 mile radius or within a one hour travelling time by public transport from the University. HOLIDAY ENTITLEMENT 35 days per annum (pro-rata during the commencement and cessation years). Two extra statutory days during the Christmas period. MEDICAL EXAMINATION The successful candidate will be required to complete an Occupational Health Questionnaire and will also be required to undergo a medical examination. ESSENTIAL CERTIFICATES Short-listed candidates will be asked to bring to interview, proof of qualification as outlined on the Job Description and Person Specification provided. Upon appointment, copies of essential certificates will be required by HRM Services. DISCLOSURE & BARRING SERVICE CHECKS The successful applicant will have to undergo a DBS check before an appointment can be made. PENSION SCHEME All academic staff will be enrolled in the Teachers Pension Scheme from their first day of employment, in accordance with the scheme rules. If staff do not wish to remain a member of the scheme, they will be entitled to opt out after enrolment.
