2 July 16 - October 16, New Exhibition. Science and Motion: The Photographic Studies of Eadweard Muybridge, Harold Edgerton and Berenice Abbott. This exhibition of approximately 40 photographs offers a rich and extensive view of the scientific studies done by three of photography s greats Muybridge, Edgerton and Abbott. Each of these artists invented devices to scientifically and photographically study and represent aspects of light and motion. Their works not only clearly and elegantly reveal scientific phenomena, but also are evidence of their individualized artistic sensibilities. These photographs are therefore not only scientific studies but art unto themselves. Sunday, July 17, 1:30 4:30 pm, Science on the Silver Screen. Jurassic Park. This is the first in a 3-part series of classic movie screenings followed by Q&A sessions with scientists to explain what was right, what was wrong, and what was just confusing. Held in conjunction with the exhibition Science and Motion: The Photographic Studies of Eadweard Muybridge, Harold Edgerton, and Berenice Abbott, the one-hour-long film will be followed by a Q&A session with a Museum staff member. Free with Museum admission. No reservations required. July 23, October 30, New Exhibition. Flora and Fauna: Drawings by Francesca Anderson. Francesca Anderson is an artist and illustrator specializing in pen-and-ink and scratchboard drawing of nature. Among her artworks are birds drawn from the Bruce Museum collection. Anderson has had over 20 solo shows and 60 group shows in the United States and abroad. Her work is represented in international museums including the National Museum of Art of Scotland, the Lindley Library of the Royal Horticultural Society, and the Smithsonian Museums, as well as in private collections, botanical books and journal articles. Saturday, July 23, 1:00-2:30 pm. Scratchboard Family Workshop. Artist Francesca Anderson will lead families in this hands-on workshop while speaking about how she captures natural history in her illustrations of plants and wildlife. Families will have the opportunity to create their own sketches and scratchboard drawings inspired by the exhibition Flora and Fauna Drawings by Francesca Anderson (on view through October 30), while using taxidermy specimens from the Museum s collection. View a new documentary film by three Greenwich High School Innovation Lab students who investigate Dr. David Cohen- Tanugi s new approach to water desalination. The scientist s cutting-edge research could help solve a global water crisis as he discovers how the material graphene can be used to purify water at the molecular level. Fall Docent Training Orientation for New Docents. This program provides weekly training sessions throughout the fall and spring to provide a thorough preparation for conducting guided tours of exhibitions for adults and for teaching children s classes in the Museum. In addition, docents meet throughout the year for the Lorraine Block Docent Lecture Series, workshops on art, science and teaching skills, and for visits to other museums. Participants receive Bruce Museum Docent Certification on completion of training at the Annual Lorraine Block Docent Award Dinner. Teaching experience is a definite plus but not a prerequisite. Her Crowd: New Art by Women from Our Neighbors Private Collections Her Crowd will offer the rare opportunity to see what some of America s most influential collectors of contemporary art consider beautiful, important, and compelling. With works from major figures like Yayoi Kusama and Tara Donovan to scores of brilliant newcomers, Her Crowd: New Art by Women from Our Neighbors Private Collection will offer a glimpse into the exciting interchange between contemporary artists and their collectors. While themes specific to women continue to be of significance, equally important are the formal concerns of the emerging generation: a powerful resurgence of abstract painting, a renewed interest in found materials, and a subtle and complex layered aesthetic, undoubtedly influenced by digital media. Light refreshments and alcoholic beverages will be served. 6:30-8:00 pm Movie screening of Women, Art, Revolution! (1 hour, 23 minutes), a film about the feminist art movement of the 1970s and 80s.
