4 Role of the Counselor Counselors work with your child all four years of high school Individual counseling: academic (progress reports, report cards, scheduling) Emotional and social counseling College guidance Career guidance 4

5 Confidentiality Everything a student says to his/her counselor remains confidential EXCEPT if it involves risk of injury to himself/herself or others. 5

7 Attendance Policy Regular attendance at school is essential to the total educational success and achievement of students Call the Attendance Office (201) x 260 on the morning of the student absence A student returning from an absence must report directly to the Attendance Office and present a written note to the Attendance Clerk before the start of the school day Allowable Absences: 19 days/ full year course 9 days/ semester course See pg. 5 of the Handbook for more details In Genesis, make sure you set your alerts to receive any notifications including attendance and discipline 7

9 Keep Track of Grades/Genesis Genesis- Gradebook will be open 24 hours after the first progress reports are released Progress reports are available twice each semester. Progress reports and report cards are only available on Genesis Genesis Passwords- ed in August. If you have trouble with your log-in, please use the link on the page to contact the Genesis administrators 9

10 Honor Roll Requirements Honor Roll and High Honor Roll. The Honor Roll is published at the end of the year (based on the student s final average) and at the end of the first semester (based on the student s first semester grades). To be on the Honor Roll, a student must have all A s and B s. To be on the High Honor Roll, a student must have all A s, and no more than one B. 10

13 REQUIREMENTS FOR THE NORTHERN HIGHLANDS REGIONAL HIGH SCHOOL DIPLOMA All students must complete 125 credits for graduation English 4 credit years of core English courses 20 credits World History/Cultures 1 credit year 5 credits U.S. History 2 credit years 10 credits Mathematics 3 credit years 15 Credits Science 3 credit years 15 credits Required Course Sequence: Physics [grade 9]; Chemistry [grade 10]; Biology [grade 11] World Languages 2 credit years 10 credits Physical Education/Health/Driver Ed 1 credit year for each year of enrollment 5 credits per year Contemporary Business Technology and Freshmen Rhetoric courses (required of all ninth graders) One semester each 2.5 credits each total of 5 credits 13

14 REQUIREMENTS (Continued) Visual & Performing Arts and Career Education & Consumer, Family, and Life Skills 10 credits A minimum of 5 credits in each area is a requirement Visual & Performing Arts Minimum 5 credits -This requirement includes all art and music classes. The following English electives (5 credits each) apply: Acting I Actors Workshop Actors Workshop II Film Studies Career Education & Consumer, Family, and Life Skills Minimum 5 credits This requirement includes: all Business Education, Applied Technology, and Family & Consumer Sciences courses. The following English electives (5 credits each) apply: TV Production Broadcast Television Video Storytelling Advanced Film Production Journalism Creative Writing I, II, and III Financial Literacy 2.5 credits -All graduates must meet the financial literacy course requirement. Please refer to page 6 of our Curriculum Guide for detailed information on meeting the financial literacy requirement 14

23 Naviance Naviance Family Connection is a comprehensive website that you can use to help in making decisions about careers and colleges. Naviance Family Connection is a service that we use in the Guidance Office to track and analyze data about our students college and career plans. Naviance Family Connection will allow you to: Get involved in the planning and advising process - Build a resume, complete on-line surveys, and manage timelines and deadlines for making decisions about colleges and careers. Research colleges - Compare GPA, standardized test scores, and other statistics to actual historical data from students who have already applied from our high school. Sign up for college visits - Find out which colleges are visiting our school and sign up to attend those sessions. 23
