We are beyond excited to expand our ability to provide students additional research opportunities while developing collaborative partnerships on campus and within the community, state and region. The vision for the additional space is to provide a dedicated research space for UM AT faculty, which currently takes place in the teaching laboratory. The UM AT program has increased our community outreach providing medical care for some of the youth sports programs and as a result are looking for space to facilitate implementation of a sports injury clinic, injury risk screening, as well as a concussion clinic. We are launching a capital project to complete the renovation and our goal is to raise $300,000. If you are able to financially support this project, please go to and include SUE394 Athletic Training Program Facility Fund in the comment box on the donation form or contact Valerie.Moody@umontana.edu for more information!

The inaugural leadership retreat held in Bozeman, MT this past January was the next step in this collaborative partnership to develop professional networks, work on team building skills and leadership development. The two day retreat was a huge success and the programs are already looking at ways to continue to expand and improve this incredible learning opportunity for our students in Montana.

5 P AP GA E G E 5 5 CLINICAL EDUCATION UPDATE The arrival of May signals the end of the academic year, and another series of successful clinical education rotations! UMAT students logged over 11,000 hours of clinical experience this academic year, an average of almost 600 hours for each student! A huge THANK YOU to our clinical preceptors who dedicate so much of their time and effort into the education of our students. Ten students will be returning for their second year in the program in August, and will be engaged in a wide variety of clinical experiences. Will Houck will spend his fall semester in Chicago at Northwestern University, primarily with the football team. Erin Boggs and Jacob Casebolt will take on the challenge of the Griz football team, and JT Yancy will spend his fall with the women s soccer team. Heather Bartz joins Hellgate High School during the fall, and John Sunchild will spend his spring at Hellgate. Castle Creighton will spend nearly 7 months with the Missoula Jr. Bruins and Missoula Area Youth Hockey. Erika Vichcales will begin a season with the Lady Griz basketball team in October. Finally, Rina Kasuga and Madison McCarthy will spend the spring with the track and field team! We are excited to see the personal and professional growth of each of these students as they begin their year-long preparation for independent practice upon graduation in May 2018! Finally, the UMAT program is continuing to expand clinical opportunities for students. This spring brought new agreements with Northwestern University, Polson High School and the San Diego Padres. We also began a site sharing agreement with the University of Montana Physical Therapy program, allowing two AT students to gain experience in the physical therapy clinic while two PT students spent time in the RATC. We are also working with St. Luke s Orthopedics and Sports Medicine in Boise, ID to set up a clinical opportunity for We strive to expand our clinical offerings to best meet the needs of our students, and prepare them for professional practice. If you are interested in possibly serving as a clinical preceptor or clinical site, please contact Melanie McGrath at melanie.mcgrath@umontana.edu. REMEMBERING JOHN JACK REDGREN John A. "Jack" Redgren of Nashville, TN Age 74, passed away May 12, Please join us in honoring the life of Jack John Redgren former undergraduate student at the University of Montana and strong supporter of our athletic training program. Later he worked with yet another Hall of Famer Joe Warden at Vanderbilt University. Jack was a strong proponent of athletic training professional education and following his time at Vanderbilt he worked in the private sector treating varsity, professional and recreational athletes. He continued to work part-time with Tennessee Orthopedic Alliance until his retirement. In 2002 Jack fulfilled one of his lifelong dreams by being inducted into the Hall of Fame. 11 P A G E Naseby & Evelyn Rhinehart Scholarship With the support of the Rhinehart family, the Naseby and Evelyn Rhinehart Scholarship was established in honor of the late Naseby and Evelyn who were so loved and respected by the University of Montana and the Missoula Community. Naseby mentored numerous athletic training students and UM student athletes in the 47 years he served as the Head Athletic Trainer. The positive impact he had on young students, coaches, administrators and everyone he interacted with will never be forgotten. This spring for the first time the Naseby and Evelyn Scholarship was awarded to a JT Yancy, an outstanding UM athletic training student. To date we have raised approximately $13,000 and our short term goal is $35,000 to endow the scholarship and long-term is $150,000 to provide more than one scholarship. Because of all the lives that Naseby and Evelyn touched we are very optimistic about the propensity of acquiring pledges from potential donors. Dennis Murphy established an outstanding Naseby and Evelyn Athletic Training Scholarship Facebook page, which includes a collection of numerous articles, pictures, awards and information about Naseby and Evelyn from the time Naseby arrived in Missoula/UMT as a student athlete, to the end of his 47 year career. If you have a Facebook account it is a must see! groups/ / After browsing the Facebook page and appreciating the far -reaching influence Naseby and Evelyn had on UM, the Missoula community and athletic training profession, it will inspire you to make a pledge to support the education of a UM Athletic Training Student. Please complete the pledge form on the last page of the newsletter if you are able to contribute.
