Executive Director s Newsletter Sturgis Charter Public School East Campus Presentations at National and International Conferences Sturgis will be participating in presentations at two conferences during the next couple of weeks. Executive Director Eric Hieser will be joining a panel of national leaders at the National Charter School Conference in Las Vegas next week and will be giving his perspective on "Beyond the Common Core--Preparing Students to Compete in the Global Marketplace." He will be sharing an overview of the Sturgis IB for All experience and why Sturgis participated in the OECD PISA exam this year as a means for gauging the preparation that Sturgis provides to that of schools in many countries around the world. In addition, Sturgis East Principal Paul Marble and Eric Hieser will be giving a presentation entitled, "IB for All: Creating and Supporting Inclusive Classrooms in the Diploma Programme" at the IB Americas Annual Conference in Washington, D.C. The presentation will focus on the support systems that Sturgis employs to assist all students, including students with special needs, to achieve successful results in the rigorous IB Diploma Programme. Departures and Arrivals While it is bittersweet to realize that our graduating seniors and several faculty will be leaving Sturgis and moving on to the next steps in their lives, it will be exciting to meet our incoming students, parents, and faculty in August. We will welcome 95 new grade nine students at each campus on the first day of school on August 27. New grade nine students who reside in the following largest sending school districts are expected to fill Sturgis classrooms this fall: Sandwich-43, Barnstable-34, Bourne-23, Dennis-Yarmouth-19, Plymouth-18, and Mashpee-10. We are also sad to see the departure several colleagues who have meant a great deal to the vibrancy of the Sturgis program over the years, but we look forward to the arrival of new faculty from the following locations: Centerville, Sandwich, Falmouth, Harwich, Mansfield, and Amherst in MA; in addition to Berkeley--CA, Pomfret--CT, Philadelphia--PA, Puerto Rico, Bahrain, Korea, China, and London. All of these new faculty and our returning faculty will be introduced during Convocation on the days immediately prior to the start of school on August 27. Convocation, Tuesday, August 26th Each year we look forward to welcoming back to school all of our students and parents for Convocation as a means of giving the Sturgis community an overview of the upcoming school year, an opportunity to introduce the faculty, and a time for new students to meet with their advisories. Convocation will be held at the Hyannis Resort and Conference Center on Tuesday, August 26th at 6:30 p.m.. All Sturgis students and parents are strongly encouraged to attend. June, 2014 We provide parents with this Newsletter as a means of helping you become better informed about events and activities at Sturgis. We hope that this type of communication is helpful. Communication, of course, is a two-way street. Please do not hesitate in calling us with a question.

Summer Reading List Greetings from Sturgis East and West English Department this letter serves to explain your summer reading selections for entering English students at both East and West in August of The list below will provide a starting point for teaching and learning in August. Books have been chosen for their merit, relevance to the school s program, and for their interest to young readers. It is important that students in grades 9-11 follow the prescriptive list for each grade level as determined by this year s grade level teachers. When students enter classes in the fall, teachers will expect they will have read two books and will assess these readings after discussions and reflections. Students entering grade 12 do not have a summer reading requirement due to the expectation that they will be working on extended essays and CAS requirements over the summer. During the first two weeks of school in the fall, students will be assessed over the summer reading books. Students can expect assessments over the required and choice books to take the form of in-class essay, test, written book review, and/or oral presentation. Students are encouraged to keep a written journal about characters, ideas and issues relevant to the books, and any significant quotes they would like to discuss in class. However, with the hope that students enjoy summer reading, no formal assessment is required until school begins. The current required reading list is made up of both fiction and non-fiction choices. The English Department focuses on these genres in the IB program, and this emphasis is extended to the whole of the summer reading program. Enjoy the summer and enjoy your reading! Sturgis East/West English Department See the Summer Reading List on the next page...

GuideLines for June News from the Guidance Team Did you know that our Guidance Website contains a wealth of information? You don t need to wait for a rainy day to explore it! Visit the drop-down menu at: Junior Parents Thank you to all the parents of juniors who have submitted Parent Brag Sheets. Counselors weave together contributions from students, teachers and parents as we prepare college letters of recommendation on behalf of our school. There is still time to turn yours in. Please go to: ParentBragSheet2014.pdf. Looking to the weeks ahead, summer is a good time for rising seniors to: fine tune their college research; explore and visit the colleges and universities that best fit their needs; develop a system for managing the many application requirements and due dates that lie ahead; begin working on an essay or two for their college applications; and compile a list of extracurricular activities, awards and work experiences, as this information is requested on most college applications. For resources to assist with these steps visit the guidance section of the Sturgis website: sturgischarterschool.org/ All Parents Would you like to take a free Personality Type inventory? Freshmen and Sophomores have been connecting the dots between personality, learning style and careers. Visit and investigate the links in the upper-right hand corner. This year s inventory links Truity and 16 Personalities, together with the Sophomore PLAN World of Work results have provided many students new avenues to explore. Sometimes a glossary can be a useful resource while navigating IB at Sturgis. Visit: guidance/ibcollege.html While you are there, check out the IBO website. Click on: and follow the link in the upper right hand corner. The drop-down menu under About the IB, then Recognition provides informative college and university policies regarding crediting IB coursework. Counselors are happy to help you and your child navigate these high school years. Please be in touch for any matters, large or small. We wish you and your family a happy and safe summer.

Graduation 2014 Moved, touched and inspired!!! Thank you Sturgis from one proud parent! Just returned from my grandson's graduation beautiful afternoon wonderful faculty jubilant students! Good luck and best wishes to all the new graduates! I had the extreme pleasure of attending my niece s graduation this past weekend. Like most people, I have attended many graduations including those of my own children. This was different. I wanted to tell you that I could sense a real community feeling among the students of this graduating class. In a time when kids can get lost and unsure of their identity, Sturgis has created a haven for success. I want to commend you on the work you do for all the students. Please know that you are moving mountains and providing hope in a crazy world. We greatly appreciate these notes from Sturgis families. If you have a relative who would like to support our efforts at Sturgis, please let them know we welcome donations! Donations can be made by check payable to William Sturgis Friends of Education Foundation, P.O. Box 2012, Hyannis, MA Credit card donations can be made through Pay- Pal on our webpage. It is not the amount you give that matters, it s your action that counts!

Message from the CCCRT As of June 30 th, student passes expire for the CCRT. Student rates are not valid in the summer. To recertify- after July 1 you must go to the Hyannis Transportation Center, to the 2 nd floor office. Marine Biology Club The Marine Biology Club has met four times and we have already had great success tagging horseshoe crabs at Millway Beach in Barnstable. The Massachusetts Audubon Society donated equipment and we've tagged over 60 crabs! We've also seen some other cool critters, including slimy Northern Moon Snails, feisty Green Crabs, a baby Razor Clam and gooey Lugworm eggs. The students in the club have learned a ton about each species we've found and also a lot about the inter-connectedness of these species in the inter-tidal zone. We're having a blast out there! The freshmen of Sturgis East recently went on a field trip (May 30th) to WBNERR (the Waquoit Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve). This trip served as an introduction to the BWET program at Sturgis East, coordinated by Dr. Pete Sampou. The BWET program strives to raise student awareness of the environmental importance of estuaries. It also promotes student involvement in estuarine research. The knowledgeable scientists of WBNERR taught our students all about estuaries and introduced them to techniques used to study these ecosystems.

We've made a couple hundred copies and passed them out to both East and West campuses. If you'd like a copy, there should be some available in the library or front office. We also have a website which will be updated with all future content. Check it out: sturgiscurrent.blogspot.com Cover art by Amy Darbyshire Trip to China: Next June Sturgis will have a trip, through our trusted travel company EF tours, to China.
