Drury Swimming and Diving Panthers 3 DR. EDSEL MATTHEWS VP FOR ATHLETIC AFFAIRS Dr. Edsel Matthews moved to a newly created position of Vice President For Athletic Affairs in June of 2007 after serving as Drury s Director of Athletics since In his new position, Matthews serves as the primary fundraiser for the athletic department and oversees all aspects of Drury athletics while working closely with new AD Pat Atwell. While at Drury, Matthews has helped Drury make the switch to the Great Lakes Valley Conference and add new sports like the highly successful, first-year DU baseball program of last season and this year s new entry, softball. Under his direction, the Panthers finished a bestever ninth place in the Director s Cup all-sports competition for NCAA Division II in Matthews, a Southwest Missouri State graduate, was a former basketball assistant and head coach of the Panthers before joining the Springfield R-12 Schools as their Director of Athletics/Activities Director for the next 25 years starting in 1978, where his tenure brought significant change and advancement for the city s athletic programs. Matthews was recognized as the Missouri Athletic Director of the Year in 1984 and was selected in 1990 for the National Award of Merit, naming him one of the elite athletic administrators in America. Atwell had spent the past 16 years at a fellow Great Lakes Valley Conference member school, Quincy (Ill.) University, where he had served as athletic director since 2001 and helped the Hawks not only become highly competitive in the GLVC, but construct several new facilities in his tenure. Atwell was also a highly successful head baseball coach with the Hawks from 1991 til he assumed the AD s role. Atwell coached the Hawks to a record of over the next 10 years, making him the all-time winningest coach in the history of the program. He led Quincy to Division II Tournament appearances in 1997 and 1999 and to back-to-back 40-win seasons in 1999 and Atwell was named GLVC Coach of the Year in 1997 and 1999 and produced six All-Americans, including first-teamer Josh Rabe, who was drafted by the Minnesota Twins in the 11th round of the 2000 Major League Baseball amateur draft, and pitcher Josh Kinney, who reached the major leagues in 2006 with the St. Louis Cardinals, serving as a key contributor on the World Series championship team. 6 COACHING STAFF

Drury Swimming and Diving Panthers 5 HEAD COACH BRIAN REYNOLDS There is not a more nationally decorated or distinguished coach on the Drury athletic staff than men s and women s swimming and diving coach Brian Reynolds, who is now in his 26th year with the men s program and 21st year with the DU women. That s the unique territory you enter when, as Reynolds as done, you produce a national championship contender in your sport year in and year out, a program that expects to win every time its athletes hit the water. Or when, like Reynolds, you ve done enough in your sport to warrant induction into the Missouri Sports Hall of Fame, the ultimate honor to be bestowed upon Reynolds when the local shrine holds its annual induction dinner and ceremony in February, His Panther men s squad is seeking its fifth straight NCAA Division II national championship this season, while the DU women look to start a new streak after finishing second last season after riding a string of six consecutive national runner-up finishes and claiming four national titles in a row of their own from as Drury has become THE name in D-II swimming across the U.S. Coach Reynolds has earned several honors, which include being named as the NCAA-II national Coach-of-the-Year in the women s division in 1996 and 1997 and was the men s division Coach-of-the- Year in 1996, 1999 and 2003 as well as in 2005 and 06. His illustrious record also includes eight NAIA national championships on the men s side - including a remarkable run of seven straight titles from and three NAIA women s championships, those coming in consecutive years from Preparation, practice, recruiting and discipline have been some of the key components that have been the foundation of the Panthers success, traits Reynolds learned early in his career as a successful swimmer at Drury and as an assistant coach before taking over the program from long-time Panther coach Jack Steck. A native of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, Brian was on two national championship teams in 1981 and Reynolds also has been involved with the highly successful Springfield Aquatics Swim Club as its director for 26 years. The area s premier junior competitive swimming program, one of the oldest in the Midwest, consists of approximately 140 swimmers from ages 8 through 18, dozens of which have gone on to swim collegiately for the Drury squads and other NCAA programs as well. SPA has had numerous junior national qualifiers, three junior national champions, a half-dozen senior national qualifiers and last year had its first Olympic Trials qualifier in former Glendale High School star and current Notre Dame 100 Back specialist Caroline Johnson. I enjoy coaching the kids as much as I do the collegiate athletes simpy because of their desire to learn and their enthusiasm toward the sport of swimming, Reynolds says. I coach them every day, twice a day during the summer and have thoroughly enjoyed watching these kids develop into young athletes. Reynolds and wife Amy have also been conducting the Springfield Prep lesson program for ages 4 to 13 for 27 years as well. We ve had kids go from the lesson program s learn to swim program to national and junior national qualifiers, Reynolds said. That s been one of our most rewarding experiences. Reynolds earned his master s degree from the University of Central Arkansas in 1986 and is an assistant professor in the Drury exercise and sport science department. He and Amy have four children: Brooke, Zach, Allie and Tanner. 29 Drury Swimming and Diving Panthers Season Preview It s the Drive For Five for a Drury men s swimming and diving team in search of its fifth straight NCAA-II national championship, while the DU women might just field the strongest team in the program s illustrious history this winter. The campaign opened at a site that provided a friendly reminder, for sure. Because by appearing in early October in the annual Show-Me Showdown hosted by the University of Missouri at the Aquatics Center in Columbia, it surely triggered memories of the success the Drury squads had in the same pool just seven months earlier, when the men brought home their fourth straight D-II national title and the women missed by a whisker of making it two in a row, settling for second place behind Truman State. This time around, both Drury squads expect to be hoisting championship trophies when nationals arrive in Houston, Texas come March. Reasons for the optimism? On the men s side, it starts with a veteran presence at the top, led by returning standouts in seniors Mitch Snyder, Yiwen Huang and Kyrill Fesenko and junior Alexander Protsenko. Snyder won national championships in the 1000 and 1650 Freestyle events last spring and qualified for the U.S. Olympic Trials over the summer; Huang has won four individual titles over the past two years, including back-to-back championships in the 100 Fly, and has been a part of two winning relay teams; and Fesenko and Protsenko each claimed victory in an event at nationals last year, Fesenko winning the 400 IM and Protsenko the 100 Back. Add in a large and talented sophomore group that s a year more experienced and one of coach Brian Reynold s top freshman classes in memory and the Panthers expect to resume their perch among the best in D-II, looking to add to their current total of six NCAA-II national titles (to go with 10 won previously as an NAIA member). We have tremendous experience, talent and leadership at the top with this group of seniors, Reynolds says, and with a couple of additions at semester plus the development of this very strong freshman class and we could have the depth to make another strong run at a title. And then there s the women s side of things, where the Panthers came oh-so-close (12 points) a year ago, especially when you consider they had lost junior star Jing Hua who captured two individual events at nationals a year earlier and was a key component of the relay squads - during a freak accident on their annual training trek to Hawaii at Christmas break. Drury will be looking to pick up its sixth women s national D-II title next March (and 10th overall, including the NAIA days) behind a loaded squad headed by seniors Eunate Garro and Janelle Slattery and juniors Abbey Musch and Hua as well as talented vets like senior Xaio Juan You, junior Meagan Chambers and sophomore Li Tao, not to mention another quality group of freshmen, led by freestyle specialist Erin Dolan. Slattery has been a part of 10 national championship winners for the Panthers, including the 100 Back as a freshman and junior and the 200 Fly her sophomore season. Garro has spearheaded six national-winning relay units over the past two seasons, including a pair a year ago, while Musch picked up her first national championship by winning the 400 IM last spring. This very well could be the strongest women s team we ve had, Reynolds said. You ve got to make it through the season with a little luck and avoid injuries, but we re excited about the potential this group has when it comes time to head to Houston in March. Add in the ever-improving diving squads coached by Richard Hackett, and it s a combination that could have Panther fans celebrating again next March. Drury will once again have to navigate a schedule loaded with NCAA Division I challenges, with meets scheduled against the likes of Mizzou, Kansas, Arkansas and Missouri State, but that s no different than any other year. Nor are the expectations from a pair of programs accustomed to finishing on top.

Drury Swimming and Diving Panthers 34 Educating Drury University: Leaders for Communities Near and Far As the first institution of higher education in southwestern Missouri, Drury holds a unique place in the Springfield community. Beginning with its founding in 1873 by a group of Congregationalists, Drury has welcomed a diverse student body, offering unusual opportunity for its time to women and American Indians. Anyone up to the challenge, the founders seemed to say, should be able to partake of intellectual nourishment. As the 20th century progressed, so did Drury. In addition to extending its reach and reputation as a liberal arts college, Drury became the first in the region to offer courses tailored for working professionals. In the 1990s, Drury recognized the need for students to be able to spot economic and cultural trends on a global scale; a new curriculum, Global Perspectives 21, accomplishes that goal. With the School of Education and Child Development, Breech School of Business Administration and Hammons School of Architecture, Drury moved into a class known as the New American College, where profession-oriented education is layered over a strong liberal arts foundation. Drury is divided into two main divisions: Drury College, which serves 1,600 traditional full-time undergraduates, and the College of Graduate and Continuing Studies (CGCS), which offers classes to more than 3,000 adult professional, non-traditional and parttime students in 25 majors and five master s programs. CGCS offers classes in Springfield, online and at seven satellite campuses in central and southwestern Missouri. Among the majors and programs offered in Drury College, science, pre-medical and pre-health-science programs are among the most popular. Partnerships with the University of Missouri-Columbia, St. Louis University and the Kirksville College of Osteopathic Medicine help exceptional students gain early admission to medical, osteopathic and law schools. Engineering and occupational therapy students can earn two degrees through a five-year program with Drury and Washington University in St. Louis. Drury s exceptional resources are dedicated to a single purpose: educating bright students who will become the next generation of leaders. From its oldest alumnus to the newest graduates, this service to community is a vital part of Drury University. Mission Statement Drury is an independent university, churchrelated, grounded in the liberal arts tradition and committed to personalized education in a community of scholars who value the arts of teaching and learning. Education at Drury seeks to cultivate spiritual sensibilities and imaginative faculties as well as ethical insight and critical thought to liberate persons to participate responsibly in and contribute to life in a global community to foster the integration of theoretical and practical knowledge. Goals & Objectives Adopted by the faculty and board of trustees, Spring 1989 The goal of the Drury University Athletic Department is to provide student-athletes an opportunity to compete in an intercollegiate athletic program that is an integral part of their educational experiences and in consonance with Drury s Mission Statement. Operate a program that maintains the highest integrity and standards of conduct. Produce winning teams that are competitive on a national level. Prepare individuals for the competitive and stressful aspects of life. Instill positive attitudes for goal setting and achievement within each athlete. Maintain strong public relations through the sports information office and booster clubs. Maintain a safe, healthy, drug-free athletic program. Provide opportunities for as many students as possible. Promote good sportsmanship by all members of the Drury community. Maintain high graduation rates for all athletic programs.

Drury Swimming and Diving Panthers 35 Drury University Athletic Facilities When it comes to available athletic facilities, Drury s studentathletes can take pride in knowing they play and practice in and on some of the best in the nation on the NCAA Division II level.that claim will only get stronger with the proposed addition of the $16 million O Reilly Family Event Center, with final fund-raising efforts near completion and construction to begin soon on the state-of-the-art, 3,200-seat facility expected to begin in early The OFEC will serve as the home for both the tradition-rich Drury men s and women s basketball programs as well as Panthers volleyball, joining a long list of quality venues the DU squads call home. That includes the refurbished Meador Park and Thompson Field facilities in south Springfield for Drury baseball and softball, respectively; the fine Harrison Stadium artificially-turf facility that is home to the Drury soccer squads; and, of course, historic Weiser Gym, the current, 2,200-seat home of the Panther basketball and volleyball programs. Adjacent to Weiser Gym is the Hutchens Health, Physical Education and Recreation Center which houses the Breech Pool, home of the perennial national champion Drury men s and women s swimming and diving squads, as well as Mabee Gym, a varsity practice and student recreational facility. Drury s highly competitive men s and women s golf teams also benefit from practicing and playing on some of the best courses in the Midwest, including Highland Springs Country Club, site of the annual Nationwide Tour stop in Springfield, as well as Hickory Hills Country Club, Twin Oaks Country Club, Millwood Golf and Racquet Club and the Rivercut Golf Course, the latter one of the top public courses in America. The highly successful Panthers tennis squads both call the fabulous Cooper Tennis Complex home. The award-winning facility features 12 indoor courts as well as a plethora of outdoor surfaces, including a stadium court that serves as home for the Springfield Lasers of World Team Tennis. Drury athletes stay in playing shape by working out at the Barber Fitness Center, a state-of-the-art weight room and fitness facility located just off of Weiser Gym and made possible several years ago by the generous donation from Sharon Barber, a long-time Drury athletics booster. Members of the Drury baseball and softball teams as well as the golf squads also take advantage of the Tindle Mills facility, an indoor training area complete with batting cages, weight room with exercise equipment, and plenty of space for the players to get their workouts in when weather forces them indoors. When injuries unfortunately do call, the athletes from Drury s 17 intercollegiate sports squads receive training help in the Hutchens HPER from full-time certified head athletic trainer Erin Kineman as well as assistants Summer Stewart and Jeff Paden and a host of student assistants. The Panthers team physicians are Drs. Michael Hartman and Ryan Snyder, orthopedic specialists with the Bone and Joint Center of the Cox Medical Centers system. Together, the Drury training team helps to ensure that the 270-plus athletes on campus receive the best possible care in terms of athletic injury prevention and rehabilitation. Like the DU basketball and volleyball squads, the training staff will move to the OFEC when available for a spacious, modernized rehabilitation and training center.

Drury Swimming and Diving Panthers No NCAA Division II institution in America can match the illustrious history and rich tradition that is the swimming and diving program at Drury University. A walk through the Breech Pool area and a glimpse at the banners that loom over the Panthers workplace provides a hint to the expectations when a young swimmer or diver makes the decision to join either the men s or women s program at Drury and a visit to the trophy cases housed in the Hutchens HYPER, home of Drury Athletics, clearly confirms it. Sixteen men s national championships, six coming since Drury made the move from NAIA to NCAA-II back in the mid-1990s including four straight, after the Panthers brought home top honors again last March in what amounted to their backyard of Columbia, Mo. Eight women s national championships, including five at the D-II level and a near-miss last season, when the Panthers came up just 13 points short of making it back-to-back titles and perhaps were on their way to beginning a string similar to their run of four straight from Numerous All-Americans, including most recently, the The Drury Swimming Tradition likes of Jakub Jiracek, who left his marks in the NCAA record books by winning 10 individual championships in his three seasons of competition as a Panther from , and Cara Fadel, who helped the Panthers to seven national championship events over her final two seasons and was a four-time All-America choice from Each March, a slew of Panthers who leave the site of the national championships toting home a large share of the hardware, many from the top spot on the awards platform. But being a Panther swimmer or diver also means achieving a heightened level of excellence out of the water as well. Drury student-athletes excel in the classroom, where they prepare themselves for careers that go well beyond their years of glory spent in the pool. Do you possess the winning combination of studentathlete excellence Drury is looking for?
