5 Athletics at Central CCS is a member of the OHSAA (Ohio High School Athletic Association) for our High School teams. CCS competes in the MBC (Mid-Buckeye Conference) for both Middle School and High School teams. We compete against Private and Public schools in Division 1 Division 4.

6 Athletics at Central There is an emphasis on participation at the Middle School and Freshman team levels. Every attempt will be made to have each athlete participate. The Junior Varsity and Varsity team levels become more selective. The more advanced and skilled players have increased playing opportunities to achieve a high level of success for our school s teams. Some players may experience less playing time than previous years.

10 Basic OHSAA Rules & Regulations

11 General OHSAA Eligibility Standards Eligibility rules exist to help maintain competitive balance in school sports and to promote the purpose of education-based athletics. As a student-athlete, YOU are responsible for your compliance. Besides OHSAA regulations, your school also has the authority to establish additional academic standards and codes of conduct.

12 General OHSAA Eligibility Standards In order to maintain eligibility, you must be officially enrolled in an OHSAA member school, or participating in accordance with state law, and you must have a biological and/or adoptive parent who lives in Ohio. All incoming ninth graders must have received passing grades in a minimum of five of the subjects in which they received grades in the immediately preceding grading period. To maintain eligibility, high school students must have received passing grades in a minimum of five one-credit courses, or the equivalent, in the immediately preceding grading period.

13 OHSAA Scholarship Standards All incoming seventh graders are eligible insofar as the scholarship bylaw regardless of previous academic achievement. To maintain eligibility, 7th - 8th grade students must have received passing grades in a minimum of five classes in the immediately preceding grading period.

14 OHSAA Scholarship Standards Students taking College Credit Plus courses must comply with OHSAA scholarship standards. All students participating via state law that permits home educated, non-public, community and STEM school students to participate at public schools must also comply with OHSAA scholarship standards. Semester and yearly grades have no effect on OHSAA eligibility unless your school provides grades at the end of a semester or school year pursuant to Board of Education policy.

15 OHSAA Scholarship Standards To attempt to regain OHSAA eligibility, summer school grades, including College Credit Plus courses, may NOT be used to substitute for failing grades received in the final grading period of the regular school year or for lack of enough courses taken the preceding or subsequent grading period. If you drop a course or change your schedule, it is critically important that you contact your principal or athletic administrator to see if this affects your eligibility. The OHSAA has no minimum grade point (GPA) requirement, thus issues regarding eligibility when only the state-mandated GPA is of concern are strictly a local school district matter and not an OHSAA matter.

16 OHSAA Semester Standards No high school student will be eligible if he or she has been enrolled in high school for more than eight semesters. High school students will be ineligible whenever they turn 20 years old. Seventh- and eighth-grade students who turn 15 before August 1st are also ineligible for 7th and 8th grade sports but MAY BE eligible to participate in high school athletics.

17 OHSAA Non-School Team & Out-of-Season Standards You will be ineligible if you are competing on a non-school team in the same sport during your school team s season (example: club soccer team during your school s soccer season). Coaches and schools cannot require that you participate in an open gym/open facility OR in a conditioning or instructional program. Violations of this regulation will result in penalties.

18 OHSAA Non-School Team & Out-of-Season Standards There are certain restrictions regarding tryouts, practices and competitions with non-school teams before, during and after the school season. There are also restrictions for instruction you can receive from school coaches outside of your season in an OHSAA team sport (baseball, basketball, field hockey, football, ice hockey, lacrosse, soccer, softball and volleyball) and some OHSAA individual sports (cross country, track & field and wrestling). There are no restrictions for instruction you can receive from school coaches outside of your season in many OHSAA individual sports (bowling, golf, gymnastics, swimming & diving and tennis). Before participating with a non-school team or receiving instruction outside the season from your school coaches, meet with your athletic administrator or visit the OHSAA website ( to ensure all regulations are being followed.

19 OHSAA Transfer Standards Once eligibility has been established at a member high school, a transfer to a different high school may mean you will lose eligibility for interscholastic athletics for a period of time at your new school. For specifics on the period of ineligibility, visit Should you have transferred to this school, you must ensure all required paperwork has been submitted to the OHSAA AND the state office has granted approval for eligibility. Immediate eligibility will be granted only if one of the exceptions to the OHSAA transfer regulation has been met. 21 Your Health & Safety Before the season s first practice, you must have had a physical examination within the past year AND an examination clearance form must be on file at the school. Physical examinations are valid for 13 months from the date of the exam. Exams taking place from May 1 to June 1 are valid for one year plus through the end of the next school year spring season. In addition, you will not be eligible unless you and your parents have signed the OHSAA Authorization Form, the OHSAA Eligibility & Authorization Statement and the Ohio Department of Health s (ODH) concussion form and the ODH Sudden Cardiac Arrest Form, all of which must be on file at your school.

23 Concussions Concussions are NOT just a problem in football... concussions can happen in just about any sport! A concussion is a traumatic brain injury that interferes with normal function of the brain. Dings and bell ringers are SERIOUS brain injuries and you do NOT have to have loss of consciousness for it to be considered serious. Young athletes are at increased risk for serious problems.

24 Concussions In Ohio, any athlete who exhibits signs, symptoms, or behaviors consistent with a concussion... such as loss of consciousness, headache, dizziness, confusion or balance problems... shall be IMMEDIATELY removed from the contest or practice and shall not return to play that same day. Thereafter, the student shall not return to practice or competition until cleared with WRITTEN AUTHORIZATION from a physician or health care provider approved by the local board in accordance with state law. You are highly encouraged to review a short presentation on concussions available at no cost (

25 Sudden Cardiac Arrest Sudden Cardiac Arrest (SCA) is the most common cause of death among student-athletes, and dizziness, loss of breath and a racing heart are often symptoms that are overlooked. In many cases, recognizing the signs of cardiac trouble means student-athletes can continue their athletic participation. Participants and parents are required to view the Ohio Department of Health s sudden cardiac arrest video that may be shown at your school. In addition, participants and parents must review and sign the Ohio Department of Health s Sudden Cardiac Arrest Information Sheet prior to participation. 27 Respect The Game The OHSAA s vision for positive sporting behavior is built on expectations. It calls on the school community administrators, contest officials, coaches, students, parents and fans to strive for positive sporting behavior in everything they do by teaching the value of ethics, integrity, equity, fairness and respect. Please treat opponents, coaches, and officials with respect. Please Ensure that your actions do not incite fans or other participants or attempt to embarrass, ridicule or demean others. REPRESENT WHO AND WHAT WE (Central Christian) are all about.

30 ATHLETIC HANDBOOK Refer to the CCS Student Athletic Handbook for all guidelines. The following are several important topics which are revisited on a yearly basis however, this summary does not cover the handbook entirely:

31 ATHLETIC HANDBOOK ATTENDANCE (Practice and Games) Students are expected and required to be at practice unless other arrangements have been made with the coach Missed practice time (unexcused) will likely result in loss of playing time Students must be in school by 12:00 PM to be eligible to practice or play in an evening athletic activity EXCEPTION PREARRANGED SCHOOL ABSENCE MUST BE SUBMITTED 24 HOURS IN ADVANCE All unexcused absences or tardies may result in a one-half game or whole game suspension.

32 ATHLETIC HANDBOOK PRACTICES Students must have all OHSAA Required forms submitted to the Athletic Office and be academically eligible to participate in practice. Saturday practices are permitted during each team s preseason and into the start of the season. Once the season is underway, Saturday practices are not promoted but are acceptable if the coach deems it necessary Practices on Wednesdays will end by 5:00 p.m. All students must leave the campus by 5:30 p.m. Varsity teams may have optional practices on inclement weather days but are not to begin prior to 1:00. Days off from school not due to inclement weather Coaches discretion on start time. Middle School and freshman games and practices are cancelled on inclement weather days.

33 ATHLETIC HANDBOOK MINI-TERM Students should attempt to participate in off-campus Mini-Terms during their Freshman and Junior Varsity years of competition. Varsity team members are expected to remain on campus unless special permission is granted by the coach. REST BETWEEN SPORT SEASONS Players involved in two consecutive athletic seasons may take up to a week off to mentally and physically rest and refocus before beginning the next season. Amount of time off between seasons is dependent upon advancement into tournament play.

34 ATHLETIC HANDBOOK TRAVEL TO AWAY GAMES Athletes are expected to travel as a team to games if transportation is provided by Central Christian School Car pooling would be the exception by school arrangement or permission Parents Only may transport their child from the game home only if picking the child up from the school is in the opposite direction or prior arrangements have been made due to unavoidable circumstances. Permission MUST been granted by the coach. It is preferred that all athletes travel to and from games as a TEAM. Teams may not stop to eat on the way home following games on school nights. Friday and Saturday games are at the coach s discretion. All exceptions to the rule must be cleared by the Athletic Office.

35 ATHLETIC HANDBOOK ACADEMIC ELIGIBILITY A student who receives two or more failing quarter marks will be ineligible for the following nine weeks. A student receiving one failing quarter mark will be placed on probation for the following nine weeks. (Providing they are eligible according to OHSAA guidelines) The student will be ineligible to participate in games, practice and/or meetings for the first ten school days of the new grading period. (Spring grades will affect fall participation.) The student will be placed on the weekly eligibility list.

36 ATHLETIC HANDBOOK COACHING EXPECTATIONS AND GUIDELINES: Required Preseason Meeting (Every Sport, Every Season) Cover expectations and details of each season Meeting with Coaches: If there is a concern, schedule a meeting with the coach and discuss the situation. Concerns should relate to athlete s treatment, achievement, development, behavior, or attitude not playing time. Should be dealt with at least 24 hours after concern arises. Direct communication (phone or meeting) is best!

37 ATHLETIC HANDBOOK PLAYER, STUDENT, & PARENT CONDUCT ATHLETES & PARENTS We expect your conduct on the field/court to be superior to that of our opponents and will hold you to a high standard. Do not yell at the officials Do not talk to or taunt opposing players Cheer LOUD But Cheer FOR US Not Against Them Resist the urge to COACH from the stands

38 ATHLETIC HANDBOOK ATHLETIC DRESS AND ATTIRE On game days, high school coaches will coordinate with their team appropriate attire which may include team wear or dressing up. School-issued uniforms (including warm-ups) are intended to be worn only in games. Uniforms are not to be worn to and from games without granted permission. Practice Attire (Field, Gyms, Hallways) Dress for practices should follow the CCS guidelines for dress and attire for athletics. Tank tops may be worn, but the tank tops should be in good taste and not cut down the side. Shirts must be worn at all times No rock groups, tobacco, or alcohol ads on T-shirts Length of shorts should be in good taste. Spandex may be worn to and for practice and games as part of the uniform. Spandex are not permitted as casual dress in the halls or to other school functions. NO SPIKES, CLEATS, AND BALLS IN THE HALLWAY & LOCKER ROOM

39 ATHLETIC TEAM MEETINGS INDIVIDUAL TEAM SPORTS MEETINGS Each team will set up their own individual athletic team meetings. It is crucial that at least one parent (and athlete if requested by coach) attend these meetings. Coaches are asked to relay expectations and provide pertinent information related to the season to both the parents and the athletes.

45 Important Final Information The Ohio High School Athletic Association has mandated that all student-athletes and their parents/guardians be provided several important pieces of information before their first regular season contest of the school year. This information has been provided via this presentation. On the final slide of this presentation, a link is provided to a Google Form for each athlete and parent to complete. Each athlete and parents electronic signature, signifies that both the athlete and parent have reviewed and and understand the policies, rules, and regulations for athletics as set forth by both the OHSAA and Central Christian School. A Google Form must be completed and signed by EVERY STUDENT ATHLETE and accompanied by a Parent Signature on EACH FORM (one form for an entire family is not accepted). If you have any questions about the information provided in this presentation, it is the responsibility of the Athlete or Parent to contact the athletic office for clarification. Students will NOT be permitted to practice or participate in any athletic contests without completing and submitting ALL OHSAA and CCS forms as outlined in this presentation.
