3 SET GOALS ASK YOURSELF THE FOLLOWING 1. What do I want to do when I get older? 2. What do I need to major in at college for the career that I want? 3. What colleges offer my major? 4. Will attending a Magnet School get me closer to my goal?

4 HIGH SCHOOL VOCABULARY Grade Point Average (GPA) the average of all final grades earned in your courses. It is calculated by adding up all of your final grades for the semester and dividing that figure by the number of semester courses. Rank-Your place/number in your graduating class, based on your GPA. Top 10%-The top 10% of students in gradating class. Ex- In graduating class of 700- top 70 students. Texas Universities currently automatically accept students graduating in top 10%, expect University of Texas at Austin- Top 7%. Pre- AP Classes- Pre- Advanced Placement classes are awarded 5 points per semester per NISD. AP classes- Advanced Placement classes in which students can test at end of year for college credit. NISD awards 8 points per semester in AP classes. Dual Credit Classes- Classes that are awarded high school and college credit. NISD awards 8 point per semester in Dual Credit classes. NISD- 90 to 100= A, 80 to 89 = B, 75 to 79 = C, 70 to 74 = D

STUDENTS MAY ALSO APPLY FOR ANY NISD MAGNET SCHOOL: CONSTRUCTION CAREERS (WARREN) BUSINESS CAREERS (HOLMES) COMMUNICATION ARTS (TAFT) SCIENCE ACADEMY (JOHN JAY) HEALTH CAREERS (NEAR THE MEDICAL CENTER)

6 Students will register for their neighborhood s assigned High School. (WARREN or HOLMES for most Jordan students.) STUDENTS MAY ALSO APPLY FOR TWO SPECIAL PROGRAMS: BRANDEIS HIGH SCHOOL : FIRE SCIENCE & CRIMINAL JUSTICE O CONNER HIGH SCHOOL: AGRICULTURAL PROGRAM LOOK ONLINE OR STOP BY THE COUNSELING OFFICE FOR INFORMATION.

7 Magnet Schools will present information on January 18 at Jordan Magnet School Requirements: Successfully completed the 8 th grade A/B/C (GPA) (Grade Point Average) Satisfactory conduct and attendance Satisfactory STAAR test scores Motivated to excel in field of interest Completed required Application (Due in Counseling Office by Jan. 27)

11 Endorsements AN ENDORSEMENT IS AN AREA OF FOCUS DESIGNED TO HAVE A POSITIVE INFLUENCE ON YOUR FUTURE COLLEGE AND CAREER PLANS. HB 5 REQUIRES ALL INCOMING 9 TH GRADERS TO SELECT AN ENDORSEMENT. ALL ENDORSEMENTS REQUIRE SPECIFIC COURSES INCLUDING 4 MATH, 4 SCIENCE, AND 2 ADDITIONAL ELECTIVE CREDITS TO GRADUATE.
