1 TESTING It is the intent the Texas Higher Education Codinating Board that Texas public institutions higher education use the flexibility responsibility granted under the Texas Success Initiative (TSI) rules to improve individualized programs to ensure the success students in higher education. Effective with the Fall 2013 semester, all public colleges universities shall assess the academic skills each entering undergraduate student pri to enrollment the student. Beginning Fall 2013, the Student Assessment Center administers the New TSI Assessment Exam throughout the year. Infmation on test dates, registration deadlines, general infmation is available upon request / can be found on our Marketplace website ( catalog.southtexascollege.edu/generaladmissions/placement-testing/%20https:// secure.touchnet.com/c20193_ustes/web). Who Must Take the TSI Assessment Exam? As the Fall 2013 semester, all students who plan to enroll at South Texas College (STC) students in high school enrolling in a college-level course MUST take the TSI Assessment Exam befe enrolling in any college-level credit coursewk. Who Does Not Have to Take the TSI Assessment Exam? A student who has previously attended any institution has been determined to have met readiness stards by that institution. Students who have achieved a sufficiently high sce on ACT, SAT, TAAS/TAKS, STAAR End Course Exams (EOC), approved College Preparaty Courses in Mathematics ELA. ACT, SAT, TAAS/TAKS, STARR EOC sces may be no me than five (5) years from the date testing, completion STC approved College Testing 1 Preparaty courses must be within two (2) year high school graduation. See Scale (p. 4). Students who are enrolled in a certificate program one-year less (42 fewer semester credit hours the equivalent) unless required f a prerequisite. Students who have graduated with an associate s baccalaureate degree from an accredited institution higher education. Transfer students from an accredited institution higher education who have earned a C better in a cresponding course (See Developmental Education Plan Procedures Guide). A student who on after August 1, 1990, was honably discharged, retired, released from active duty as a member the armed fces the United States the Texas National Guard. A student who is serving on active duty as a member the armed fces the United States, the Texas National Guard, as a member a reserve component the armed fces the United States has been serving f at least three years preceding enrollment. A student who successfully completes a college preparaty course under Texas Education Code is exempt f a period twenty four (24) months from the date high school graduation with respect to the content area the course. The student must enroll In the student's first college level course In the exempted content area in the students first year enrollment in an institution higher education. This exemption applies only at the institution higher education that partners with the school district in which the student is enrolled to provide the course. Additionally, an institution higher education may enter into a Memum Understing with a partnering institution higher education to accept the exemption f the college preparaty course. When Must a Student Take the TSI Assessment Exam? All students enrolling in credit programs at STC f the first time in the Fall 2013 thereafter, must have sces from the New TSI Assessment instrument approved by the Texas Higher Education College Board by the First Class Day.
2 2 Testing TSI Pre-Assessment Activity Requirement THECB Rule 4.55 Assessment, section (B), requires all institutions fering the TSI assessment to provide students a pre-assessment activity(ies). South Texas College fers an online pre-assessment module that is available f students at ( After completing the online module, students can print their Pre-Assessment completion page to show pro completing their Pre- Assessment Activity. The Pre-Assessment Activity is required f all students testing f the very first time. Students who have previously tested f TSI are not required to redo the Pre-Assessment Activity, but are highly encouraged to do so. Students who are testing f the very first time are required to submit pro completion. Failure to do so may require the student to not be admitted to reschedule until pro completion. Registration f the TSI Assessment Exam To register f the TSI Assessment Exam, a student must fill out an STC Admissions fm pri to the test administration. Once an Admissions fm has been processed, the student may reserve a test date online through Marketplace at secure.touchnet.com/c20193_ustes/ web/ choose to test f TSI Assessment Exam. Texas Success Initiative Test Content TSI Mathematics Statistics Test The TSI Mathematics Test is a multiplechoice assessment with four basic content areas, "strs". Sces range from 310 to 390. Shown below are brief descriptions each the four strs. Elementary Algebra Functions (6 items on the Test; 12 items on Linear equations, inequalities, systems Algebraic expressions equations (other than linear) Wd problems applications Intermediate Algebra Functions (9 items on the placement test; 12 items on Quadratic other polynomial expressions, equations, functions Expressions, equations, functions involving powers, roots, radicals Rational exponential expressions, equations, functions Geometry Measurement (2 items on placement test; 12 items on Plane geometry Transfmations symmetry Measurement (linear, area, threedimensional) Modeling applications Data Analysis, Statistics Probability (3 items on placement test; 12 items on Interpreting categical quantitative data Statistical measures Probabilistic reasoning TSI Writing Test The TSI Writing Test is an assessment that contains a multiple-choice section an essay section. The multiple-choice section has four strs. Sce range from 310 to 390. Shown below are brief descriptions each the four strs. Essay Revision (8 items on placement test; 12 items on All items in this categy will be passage-based items. Passages are drafts essays in need revision will be approximately 250 wds. Items will ask students to revise parts the essay to improve coherence, ganization, wd choice, rhetical effectiveness, use evidence. Agreement (3 items on placement test; 12 items on All items in this categy will be discrete items
3 Testing 3 Items will cover topics such as subjectverb agreement, pronoun agreement, verb tense. Sentence Structure (5 items on placement test; 12 items on All items in this categy will be discrete items Items will cover topics such as fragments, subdination codination, parallelism Items will also cover topics such as comma splices run-on sentences, as well as improper punctuation. Sentence Logic (4 items on placement test; 12 items on All items in this categy will be discrete items. Items will test the student s ability to arrange the parts sentences in the most logical way, including the use logical transitions the crect placement modifying phrases. TSI Reading Test The TSI Reading Test is a multiple-choice assessment with four basic strs. Sces range from 310 to 390. Shown below are brief descriptions each the four strs. Literary Analysis (4 items on placement test; 12 items on All items in this categy will be passage-based items. Passages are fiction literary nonfiction will be approximately 400 wds in length. Items will ask students to identify analyze ideas in elements literary texts. Main Idea Suppting Details (5 items on placement test; 12 items on All items in this categy will be discrete items with single infmational/ exposity passages wds. Items will ask students to identify the main idea a passage comprehend explicit textual infmation in the passage. Inferences in a Text Texts (8 items on placement test; 12 items on All items in this categy will be discrete items with one, in some cases, two infmational/exposity passages wds. Most items will ask students to make an appropriate inference about a single passage. Some items will require students to synthesize ideas by making a connection comparison between two passages. Auth s Use Language (7 items on placement test; 12 items on All items in this categy will be discrete items with single infmational/ exposity passages wds. Some items will ask students to identify an auth s purpose, tone, ganization, rhetical strategies use evidence. Some items will ask students to determine the meaning wds in context. WritePlacer Students who sce a 350 higher on the TSI Writing multiple-choice test who sce a 4 on the ABE Writing multiple choice test will be asked to write a persuasive essay (approximately wds) that "demonstrates clear focus, the logical development ideas in wellganized paragraphs, the use appropriate language that advances the auths purpose." They will be expected to clearly state a main idea provide specific examples details to back up the main Idea, as well as follow conventions Stard English. The essay is also untimed, per THECB decision. Feedback is provided on the following six dimensions Purpose Focus The extent to which the writer presents infmation in a unified coherent manner, clearly addressing the issue. Organization Structure The extent to which the writer ders connects ideas. Development Suppt The extent to which the writer develops suppts ideas. Sentence Variety Style The extent to which the writer crafts sentences paragraphs demonstrating control vocabulary, voice, structure. Mechanical Conventions
4 4 Testing The extent to which the writer expresses ideas using stard English. Critical Thinking The extent to which the writer communicates a point view demonstrates reasoned relationships among ideas. Payment f the TSI Assessment Exam The TSI ASSESSMENT Exam fee is $29 f all three sections; $10 f one section $20 f two sections plus a $25 Reservation Fee. Maty Participation Students required to take Developmental courses including College Success must attend scheduled classes. If they drop are dropped f nonattendance by their instructs, they are identified by the fice Admissions as non-compliant. The Testing Technician sends these students letters infming them their non-compliant status. These students must make arrangements with the Student Assessment Center. Students who fail to comply with any the following policies procedures may be withdraw from all their classes will not earn any college credit hours f the semester. Dropping Withdrawing from Developmental Course Wk Students under TSI requirements who have been assigned developmental courses due to Initial placement Exam may not drop these courses. Withdrawal from a developmental course must be associated only with withdrawal from the institution. Mixing combining sces from the SAT administered pri to March 2016 the SAT administered on after March 5, 2016 is not allowable. College Preparaty Courses in Math ELA English Language Pass course Arts (CP110100) end--course assessment with a Grade "C" Higher. Mathematics (CP111200) Pass course end--course assessment with a Grade "C" Higher. College Preparaty Course Exemptions are valid f one (1) year from the date High School graduation. Exemptions are also granted to students who have graduated with an associate baccalaureate degree students students who transfer to STC from a private independent college an accredited out state college have satisfactily completed college-level coursewk as determined by STC.
