1 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE BUREAU OF INDIAN STANDARDS PRESS NOTE: G/5/ th May 2018 Press Note: National Conference on LVDC Power Distribution Systems at Shillong Bureau of Indian Standards, BIS, organized a National Conference on the theme "Low Voltage Direct Current (LVDC) Power Distribution Systems at North Eastern Council Auditorium, Shillong on Friday, 18th May, The Conference was attended by large number of delegates from government departments, state utilities, premier educational institutions entrepreneurs and academicians. Inaugurating the conference, Smt. Surina Rajan, Director General, BIS emphasized that India is one of the largest economies and has one of the highest growth rate amongst all major countries of the world. In order to sustain the growth rate of the Indian economy, electricity generation both from conventional and non-conventional sources alongwith transmission and distribution has to grow at a brisk pace. However, owing to the vast geographical spread, there are many remote and far flung areas in the country especially in the North East where grid connectivity is either not feasible or it is not cost effective. Since electricity access has the potential to improve livelihoods and raise the standard of living, there is an urgent need to provide electricity access in such areas. Convergence of communication and energy, IoT, smart grid and other new emerging technologies will have profound impact on the way the energy sector would grow in the future. Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) is driving the work relating to formulation of Indian Standards on Low Voltage Direct Current (LVDC) Power Distribution Systems and its promotion. BIS is also in the process of formulating National Standards in the field of grid integration of renewable energy. Sh Ram Muivah Secretary, NEC stated that the Conference would be extremely beneficial in gainfully engaging all the stakeholders including the policy makers, industries and the technical experts with the overall objective of spreading awareness and promoting utilization of energy technology in the field of LVDC and grid integration of renewal energy. Sh C B Singh, Additional Director General, Sh Vishnu Gupta, Deputy Director General and Sh Rajeev Sharma, Head, Electrotechnical, BIS also participated in the Inaugural Session. Renowned technical experts, academicians, entrepreneurs including Sh Vimal Mohindru, Chair of the IEC Systems Committee on LVDC, Sh Debajit Palit, Sh Rajesh Kunnath, Sh Venkat Rajaram, Dr Rashi Gupta, Sh Kartik Wahi, Sh Amit Mukherjee and Smt Vandana Singhal presented their technical papers during the Conference
