Seminar Topics
Prevention Approaches and Supporting Technologies in the context of Organized Crime and Terrorist Networks Andrea Tundis
Motivation Prevention Approaches and Supporting Technologies in the context of Organized Crime and Terrorist Networks Organized Crime (OC) and Terrorist Networks (TN) are major threats for the European Union and its population. New technology opens opportunities for new crimes and research has shown that the number of Cyber crimes has increased. As a consequence, the technological dimensions of Organized Crime and Terrorist Networks become more and more relevant. 9
Objectives Prevention Approaches and Supporting Technologies in the context of Organized Crime and Terrorist Networks To identify and analysis prevention approaches and related technological solutions (non-digital: models, methodologies, techniques and; digital solutions: software, public security services, etc.) in the field of Organized Crime and Terrorist Networks. Task The specific task that needs to be accomplished consists of a survey on the exploration, identification and comparison of already available Crime Prevention Approaches: Identifying and describing Threat scenarios, and the threats that may raise/cause a specific situation of danger. Identifying and describing Prevention mechanisms that have both a preventive nature and risk mitigation, for health and human security safety (such as monitoring and early detection, early warning, and so on). Provide possible matchings among Threat scenarios and Prevention mechanisms. 10
Your Data, your Money and even more Data! Florian Volk
Your data, your money (1 Team) Motivation THEY take your private data and give you their services. THEY call this for free. It s NOT free! You don t want to give them all your data. But you also don t want to pay for their services. Objectives Find out how private data can be controlled in its granularity. There are socalled PETs that might be able to do this. I ask for your creativity. Task Find PETs, describe and group them. Invent one new PET based on your findings. Your PET must be able to control data granularity e.g., instead of storing an age, it might store an age range you re 31, but Tweetbook only knows that you re in between 30 and
Your precious data (2 Teams) Motivation THEY still take your data. You still don t want this. Objectives Figure our what kinds of data we talk about. I predict that there s a huge different in between what kind of data users value most and the types of data service providers value most. Task Team 1: Design (and conduct!) a study to figure out what data users value most. Find appropriate PETs to protect the three most valuable types of data. Team 2: Make a literature study to figure out what data service providers value most. Find appropriate PETs to protect the three most valuable types of data. 13
Smart Grid Environments Rolf Egert
Motivation Increasing the Resilience in Smart Grid Environments The future electrical grid will be strongly supported by Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This combination of ICT and physical electrical grid results in a so-called Smart Grid (SG). Nowadays, the permanent supply of electricity is of utmost importance. To ensure this, Resilience is an important system property that allows a system to automatically recover from a degraded state and to continue providing its services, after detecting faults and failures. Rolf Egert, Telekooperation Lab 15
Objectives Increasing the Resilience of CPS in Smart Grid Environments Learn about Real Smart Grids Resources Representation and Management Learn about Resilience of Cyber Physical Systems Task The specific task that needs to be accomplished consists of a survey on the identification and comparison of: Models and Approaches for representing Smart Grids and their Organization (e.g. Flat, Hierarchical, Distributed, Centralized, Multi Agent Systems, Holon Analogy, etc.); Resilient Methods, Techniques for managing Self-organization and selfreconfiguration of Smart Grid resources in presence of faults/attacks and failures (e.g. algorithms, processes, etc.). Rolf Egert, Telekooperation Lab 16
Demand & Supply Management in the SG Motivation The Smart Grid (SG) will be strongly supported by Information and Communication Technology (ICT). This combination of ICT and physical electrical grid allows for various new features in comparison to the current electrical grid. Renewable Energy Sources Remote Control Bidirectional Communication Rolf Egert, Telekooperation Lab 17
Objectives Demand & Supply Management in the SG Learn about Real Smart Grids Resources Representation and Management Learn about Different optimization Parameters that are used for Controlling Electricity Distribution Task The specific task that needs to be accomplished consists of a survey on the identification and comparison of: Models and Approaches for representing Smart Grid Resources; Optimization Parameters that are used to control the distribution of electricity (e.g., reducing bills, network stability); Methods, Techniques for managing electricity distribution (e.g., algorithms, processes). Rolf Egert, Telekooperation Lab 18
Motivation Attacks on the SG The Smart Grid (SG) will be strongly supported by Information and Communication Technology (ICT). However, the ICT introduces a new attack surface! Attacks can not only conducted via damaging physical components, but the electrical grid can now be attacked in a digital manner Renewable Energy Sources Remote Control Bidirectional Communication Rolf Egert, Telekooperation Lab 19
Objectives Attacks on the SG Learn about Attacks on Smart Grids Learn about Different Representations and Modeling Techniques for Attacks in large Scale Cyber-Physical Systems Task The specific task that needs to be accomplished consists of a survey on the identification and comparison of: Types of Attacks that can be conducted in a SG environment Models and Approaches for representing Attacks on Smart Grids; Rolf Egert, Telekooperation Lab 20
IoT Madness Jörg Daubert
IoT Madness: SITREP 2017 Motivation IoT security looked grim years ago reality seems worse How vulnerable are we today Objectives Survey today s IoT devices and solutions Map capabilities & security bad practices Task Systematization of (sensor, actuator, may burn house, ) Summarize security bad practices (not patched, static passwords, missing encryption, ) 22

Blockchain & BYOD Paradigm Nikolaos Alexopoulos
Smart Grids and the Blockchain (1/2) Motivation Smart and Micro- grids are new paradigms in the energy industry Distributed energy production and management can lead to more fair and robust systems Recently, blockchain-based solutions have been proposed to manage smart grid infrastructures in a distributed manner, without relying on third parties Nikolaos Alexopoulos Rolf Egert, Telekooperation Lab
Smart Grids and the Blockchain (2/2) Objectives What will the student get out of this? Research experience in an interesting and modern field Learn about Blockchains and their fields of application aside cryptocurrencies Task A survey of how blockchain technology is used in distributed smart- and micro- grid infrastructures Find advantages of this distributed approach in comparison to currently used ones. Nikolaos Alexopoulos Rolf Egert, Telekooperation Lab
Securing the BYOD paradigm (1/2) Motivation Bring your own device (BYOD) refers to the policy of allowing employees to use their personal devices (e.g. smartphones, laptops) to perform critical company operations (e.g. access sensitive files and applications) It is becoming more and more widespread. One survey shows that around 95% of employees use at least one personal device for work Security implications of BYOD are very important and there are multiple approaches to solving the problem Nikolaos Alexopoulos, Telekooperation Lab 27
Securing the BYOD paradigm (2/2) Objectives What will the student get out of this? Research experience in an interesting and modern field Task A survey of approaches to ensure the security of BYOD environments with an emphasis on less invasive approaches Nikolaos Alexopoulos, Telekooperation Lab
How to work with Literature and write Scientific Material by Florian Volk Carlos Garcia C. Rolf Egert And Nikolaos Alexopoulos
CONTENT What s a scientific publication? Finding (good) references Correct referencing Writing your own paper Peer-Reviews * parts of this slide set are based on material provided by Guido Rößling
What s a scientific publication? Scientific Publication a message With scientific background Offer a new insight of a scientific problem Solution Problem Criticism OR a survey of a research field Scientific Survey Quality of the survey directly proportional to the quality of the surveyed material Doing a survey is about balancing exploitation and exploration Exploit: Continue digging into good literature Explore: Try to find new things 31
Types of Publications Books Survey (mostly) about a topic Journal Articles Collection of related topics into one magazine (the journal) Quality mostly depends on the Journal Rankings: Good Journal Good Article Conferences and Symposia The most recent research achievements Strict page limits Papers followed by a presentation Quality is usually connected to the Conference Rankings: Good Conference Good Paper Workshops Mostly for work in progress Good for discussing new ideas 32
References and Referencing Refer back to the original source of information For others to identify the foundations of your work Giving credit, when credit is due Not doing so is REALLY bad practice A.K.A. plagiarism Grundregeln der wissenschaftlichen Ethik am Fachbereich Informatik 33
What should I reference? Scientific publications Articles, papers, books Standards RFC, ITU, IEEE, W3C etc. + All other non-scientific sources Surveys Magazines Reports Can I reference Wikipedia? NO: no reliable (or stable) information sources 34
Writing a Scientific Publication 1. First, define the message Objective of your publication define the area of research 2. Read the related work Define the work around your work Finding out what has been done Storyline What is the plot of your survey? Connect each idea with the next in a sensible way Find common links 3. Survey the related work Evaluate differences Identify trade-offs Create a Storyline 4. Write your publication 35
1. Your Work, Your Message Finding the message The most difficult part (!) Also, the creative one go beyond the state of the art Communicate your message with science Find the scientific foundations Identify the challenges! 36
2a. Related Work? Where? How? Related Work? Where? For the initial literature ask your supervisor it will give you a broad idea about the area Check publication repositories ACM Digital Lib IEEE Xplore Google Scholar Academic Search Conference directories Authors home pages Other sources from the reference lists REPEAT 37
2b. Related Work and Relevance Related Work Identify the relevant sources Evaluating the importance of a publication 1. Read the abstract Yes Good 2. Check the reference list Yes Good No 3. Read the conclusions 4. Read the rest Yes Good Next Paper Paper Read Related work will Compare your results against their results Be used as input for a survey 38
Referencing: doing it right A reference looks like this: authors title publisher date page number how was it published (proceedings) there are also other reference styles if you use LaTeX to write your report, have a look at BibTeX. 39
4. Write your Publication Always have a good paper structure Organize your ideas Organize your papers Define it BEFORE starting to add text Plan the content of each section Writing skills No one learns without doing it General Guidelines: Be concise Be precise 40
Peer-Reviews What to Write 1. Short summary of the survey 2. Strong aspects of the work What did you like? Anything exceptional worth mentioning? 3. Weak aspects of the work Anything wrong that caught your attention immediately? 4. Recommended changes to be made Offer suggestions to improve what you have read All bullets necessary for full points It is NOT the reviewer s work to correct the publication point out all typo-s, grammar and spelling mistakes 41
Summary A scientific publication is a message; a validated claim Refer to the original source of information, avoid plagiarism 1. Read the abstract Yes Good 2. Check the reference list Yes Good No 3. Read the conclusions Yes Good Next Paper 4. Read the rest Paper Read The peer-review should help, not criticize 42
