3 A Message from the Hon. Mike Bernier Minister of Education B.C. is home to some amazing athletes and school sports play a vital role in a child s life. The healthier and more active students are-the more focused and determined they are in the classroom. BC School Sports encourages students to play a part and shine in extracurricular activities. They also deliver support to schools when organizing games and tournaments. The events bring communities together and allow British Columbians to see our best and brightest in action. For many students, school is where they first begin their sport journeys, with help from coaches and volunteers. Many students go on to the highest levels of competition, representation B.C. nationally, international and Olympic and Paralympic matches. Good luck to every student and coach playing a part. A Message from the Hon. Peter Fassbender Minister of Community, Sport, Cultural Development On behalf of Premier Christy Clark and the Government of British Columbia, I would like to welcome all student athletes to the BC School Sports Provincial Championship. Qualifying for this championship takes hard work, dedication and countless hours of practice. I congratulate you for the focus and commitment. Your determination to excel will help frame your future, building resilience and respect for others through sportsmanship. The Government of British Columbia is committed to promoting amateur sport and participation at every level for high school students, and we are proud that British Columbians have one of the highest sport participation rates in Canada. I comment BC School Sports for its efforts in encouraging participation in both team and individual sport. These valuable programs provide the opportunity to learn new skills and make new friends, while remaining healthy and active. This government also recognizes the important role that staff, coaches, parents and family members play in supporting athletes to qualify for a provincial championship. And thank you to the volunteers, organizers and officials for making this event possible. On behalf of the Government of British Columbia, I wish the best of luck and great success to all athletes. BC School Sports gratefully acknowledges the generous financial assistance of the Province of British Columbia 3

4 A Message from Mike Allina President, BC School Sports Congratulations student-athletes, teachers and community coaches in qualifying for the BC School Sports (BCSS) Provincial Championships. I have had the pleasure of coaching thousands of student-athletes in my 28 years as a teacher in Vancouver. I know the hard work and dedication it takes to create successful programs. I have seen how young men and women develop skills in their sports of choice, leadership, team work, character and self-regulation. BCSS is made up of over 400 member schools which provide opportunity for 90,000 student-athletes to participate in extra-curricular school sports. These programs would not be possible without the dedication of teachers, coaches, coordinators, sport commissions, athletic associations, and volunteers. BCSS is very thankful to all those involved in giving the youth of our province such a great gift. I wish you all the best of luck as you compete in the BCSS Provincial Championships. A Message from Jordan Abney Executive Director, BC School Sports Congratulations on qualifying for this BC School Sports Provincial Championship! Just qualifying is a wonderful accomplishment, as only 14% of student-athletes playing high school sport in BC qualify to compete in provincials. With over 440 member schools, and nearly 90,000 studentathletes, you have earned the privilege to represent your community and your school and fight for a provincial title. I encourage all participants to recognize the time spent by their coaches, both teachers and community volunteers, for the time they give to support the pursuit of your dreams and goals. BC School Sports has nearly 6000 coaches around the province that give up countless hours to make school sport a reality. Be sure to thank your coaches for all they have done. Also, a huge thank you to those who make this championship possible. The Local Organizing Committee, the BCSS Sport Commission, the sponsors and event volunteers. So much goes into hosting a BCSS Provincial Championship and without their efforts, none of this would happen. Be sure to thank a volunteer this weekend for all they do. BC School Sports believes interscholastic athletics is an extension of the classroom. The lessons learned through sport, provide the foundation for good leaders of the future. School sport fosters sportsmanship, builds character and establishes healthy active living habits that will last long into adulthood. Athletes, I sincerely wish you the very best throughout the championship. Remember to represent yourself, your school and community with pride and sportsmanship. I hope this championship provides amazing athletic feats, fierce but respectful competition, and memories to last a lifetime. 4

5 2017 BC HIGH SCHOOL TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS On behalf of the BCSS Tennis Commission, I would like to take this opportunity to welcome all the teams from around the province to the 2017 BC High School Tennis Championships. This is the 43 rd annual BC championships which began in Since its beginning, this tournament has seen thousands of tennis players graduate from high school, and go on to play at the club, college, and professional level, or continue to play as a recreational player. Tennis considered a sport of a lifetime, and as players in this tournament, you are just beginning the journey. I would like to thank all the coaches, teachers, sponsors, and parents who have spent many hours developing and supporting the players in this tournament. These events could not happen without your commitment and support. Also, a large and heartfelt thank you to the tournament committee for their dedication and long hours spent organizing this major event. Whether your team is playing for one of the top prizes or you are playing for team pride, please take the time to enjoy the tournament, support your teammates and relish the opportunity to be able to play such a terrific sport. Best of luck to all the teams. Marci McLean Commissioner, BCSS Tennis Shawnigan Lake is poised to make a run at Queen Elizabeth Park 5

6 2017 BC JUNIOR INVITATIONAL TENNIS CHAMPIONSHIPS For just the third year, the BCSS Tennis Commission hosted the Junior High Provincial Tennis Championships. The tournament was planned as an outdoor event at the Burnaby Lakes Tennis Courts, however, due to significant rain storms, all but 2 matches were played indoors. The poor weather didn t dampen the spirits of the participants or organizers, as coaches, teams and volunteers rallied to move their teams to various indoor courts throughout the Vancouver area and the famous BarBQ with delicious offerings was held under the tents at the Burnaby Lakes site for both days. Grilled Cheese with smoked meat sandwiches were prepared rain or shine. The goal of the tournament is to encourage schools to have a junior team and for players to join their school team so they may start participating in high school team tennis before they reach the senior level. Each year we have seen an increase in participation with new schools coming to the tournament. At the Junior High tournament, the boys and girls and split into separate teams, to encourage growth and an opportunity for new schools to become part of the BC High School tennis community. Competition in both the boys and girls divisions was spirited and of a high quality, with many matches determined by the slimmest of margins. In the Boys division it was Collingwood defeating St. Georges for the Boys banner, with Shawnigan defeating Riverside to take the bronze medals. In the Girls division it was Crofton defeating Brentwood to earn the girls banner and Collingwood defeating Riverside for the bronze medals. The huge thank you to all the coaches and parents who assisted with their teams, and to the Rhonda Trunkfield and the BCSS Tennis Commission for organizing this event. We look forward to holding this tournament next year, so please tell any schools, athletic directors, coaches, and junior high players what a fun and worthwhile event this is. We would like to see even more schools and junior high players participating in the future. Liz Mathisen gets ready to return serve in doubles play for Collingwood Thank you Marci - Commissioner, BCSS Tennis Crofton celebrates winning the Junior Girls Provincial Tennis banner at Burnaby Lake 6
