Mr Mark Dickenson joins as our new Head of Science and Co-Grade Supervisor of Grade 8. Mr Dickenson has had extensive experience in both the assessment area and as Head of Science at Newtown High School. This term, we welcome back three staff members who have been on periods of leave to travel to Europe. These staff are; Mrs Michelle Oates, Mrs Ann Glass and Ms Sarah Ryan. Katie Kingshott joins us in the Learning Support Area and Constable Justin Abrahams from Bellerive Police will also be conducting programs with us throughout this term. We also have two new pathway planning officers as last term, Miss Kate Wilson was offered a position as Acting Social Worker at Clarence High School, whilst a permanent staff member is on maternity leave and Els McLean also decided to take leave of her position. We wish Kate all the best her new role and will miss greatly the fantastic contribution she made to Rose Bay through her work with our students in Grades Els work with our students will also be greatly missed. Our new Pathway Planning Officers are Emily Newton and Amanda Sutton. VEOLIA PRESENTATIONS Last week I attended the 2007 Environmental Service Industry Induction Program Awards held at Mawson s Place Waterside Pavilion. This event was an inaugural program established through SCOPE Tas Inc. to provide a group of students with an insight into the range of employment opportunities in the area of waste management. The program was coordinated for Rose Bay students by Department of Education -Vocational Education Development Officer, Jan Newton. The program involved students from Grades 9 and 10 Science classes in a range of visits to both workplaces and education and training sites. The students visited the Antarctic Division at Kingston to learn about waste management in Antarctica and The University of Tasmania and TAFE to gain information about academic programs related to waste management issues. They also visited the Mornington Waste Management Depot and the Veolia Laboratories. The whole program was managed through Veolia Environmental Services and provided our students with the opportunity to learn about and experience first hand, the range of employment opportunities associated with this very important area of employment. At the presentation, James Bills and Caitlyn Williams were presented with a $ bursary in recognition of their contribution and participation in the program. All students who took part in the program also received a certificate. The participants were:

Grade 9: Joshua Andrews, Emma Barnett, James Bills, Casey Pagano, Justin Dodge, Hannah MacKinley, Elise Prestage, Oliver Reading, Timothy Underwood, Sean Vincent and Courtney Wise. Grade 10: Julia Blackwood, Joshua Bowling, Belinda Clarke, Ella Duffy, Henry Franklin, Kylie Howard, Pailin Munyard, Jessica Oakford, Stevee Standen and Caitlyn Williams. I would like to thank Jan Newton for all her work in bringing this program together as well as Mr Armstrong, for facilitating his Science class members as participants. ATHLETIC CARNIVAL On October 18 and 19 all students will have the opportunity to participate in our annual Inter House Athletic Carnival. The event will commence at approximately 9:30am each day at the Domain Athletic Track. Parents and other family members are welcome to attend. Our team for the Inter High Athletics will be selected following these two days of competition. Stephen Mannering Principal CO-PILOTS PROGRAM Last Friday, we celebrated the fourth annual Co- Pilots Mentoring Program. This program has been a great addition to the wide range of opportunities provided to students here at Rose Bay. Mrs Newstead has coordinated the program over the last four years and has ensured it has continued to prosper and provide valuable learning opportunities for those students who take part. Apex Teen Fashion Awards By working with an adult mentor, students have had the opportunity to benefit from the life experiences of the mentor, as well as explore an area of shared interest. Mrs Newstead has provided a full report on the program in this newsletter. Thanks again to Mrs Newstead and her team for all their efforts in planning and organising this outstanding opportunity for our students. SOLAR CAR AND BOAT CHALLENGE Mr Armstrong and his team of students will once again compete in the State round of the National Solar Car and Boat Challenge. As defending champions of this event we are hopeful of a another great result, however, every year changes in car construction and design ensure that until the day of the event, we never really know how well our cars and boats will perform in the heat of competition. The event will be held at Newtown High School, commencing at Daylight Saving Time and concluding at around 2.00pm On Sunday 30 th September, five students travelled up to the Country Club Casino for the State Finals of the Apex Teen Fashion Awards. There were three sections in which students could enter. Julia Blackwood entered in the Daywear section and had made a red and white spotted dress with a contrasting black and white embroidered coat. Emma Perry and Chloe Fisher entered in the evening wear section. Chloe s striking dress was pink and black satin, and Emma s pale blue dress with a shimmery organza overlay featured handmade roses from the same fabric. Josie and Lucy entered in the fantasy section which allows free reign with their creativity. Josie made her dress entirely of

odd socks! Lucy s outfit depicted the four elements of Earth, Water, Fire and Wind. She wore a cape made entirely of rubbish, which when discarded, showed the possibly of restoring Mother Nature to a pristine state. With over 100 entries there was stiff competition, and the girls looked wonderful in their outfits. It was a fun day, and congratulations must go to them for all of their hard work. Well done. CO-PILOTS (SOUTH) CELEBRATION 2007 A fun, exciting and an absorbing way to learn. This Community based Mentor Program is one of the most rewarding and inspiring educational processes that I continue to co-ordinate. Eleven very special Volunteers generously gave up their time to again share their skills with students from Rose Bay over a period of 10 weeks. Through these connections and support, which I know will continue into the future, the students and Mentors shared their experiences and displayed their work in a magnificent Celebration at Rose Bay High on Friday 30th September. My thanks go to Melinda van Bommel who this year helped to coordinate the programme. Many interests were pursued: photography; child-minding; creating a banner to support the school s Mali initiative; the gaining of a Learner s Licence, to name a few. Sue Newstead, Co-ordinator, Co-Pilots South. Here are a few comments from some of the participants: I really enjoyed the Co- Pilots programme. I made a super friend and learnt a lot more about photography which will hopefully help me out in the future. Romy Smith. As a part of the Co-Pilots programme I got paired off with Bell, a university student. We arranged to meet once a week, which was sometimes hard during her exams and my school. We both had keen interests in cooking and brewing, so we made ginger beer together and a ginger bread house. My ginger bread house is on display in the foyer at school. Co- Pilots was a great experience for us both. Ingrid Holmes.

Participants in this years programme were: Chris McNamara partnered with Josh van Der Vlist, Belinda Park with Ingrid Holmes, Jessica Spotswood started with Alice Stanley and due to commitments, Alice joined Lyn Murray and Jesse Page, Lynn McIntyre with Romy Smith, Jessica Brown with Jacob Minty, Melinda van Bommel with Kacie West, Gavin Evans with Shaun Eyles, Doug Chipman with Bradly Goodwin, Marguerite Ross with Gail Rotumah And Marie Heath with Lauren Robottom. School Sport Update It s time again for the Summer Sports to begin. Basketball Championships Over the AFL / NRL Grand Final weekend, the Grade 7/8 & Grade 9/10 Boys played in the annual Southern Schools Basketball Championships. Both teams enjoyed the experience with the Grade 9/10 boys coming second in the 2A division, and the Grade 7/8 boys unfortunately being defeated in all three games. A special thank you to Phil Norris, Jodie-Anne Clarke & Steve Newett who took the time to coach and team manage the boys leading up to tournament and who also gave up their Grand Final weekend for the boys. Events like these cannot run so smoothly without the help of people like Phil, Steve & Jodie- Anne. Thank you, and well done. Netball The Spring Netball roster will begin on Tuesday the 9 th of October. Rose Bay High School has entered one Grade 7 team. Touch The Touch season will commence on the week of the 8 th of October. Teams entered are Grade 7 girls, Grade 7/8 girls, Grade 9 girls, Grade 10 girls, Grade 8 boys and Grade 9/10 boys. Futsal The Futsal roster is due to commence on Friday the 12 th of October. Teams are currently being sought. Softball The Softball season is due to commence on Tuesday the 16 th of October. Teams are currently being sought. Hockey / Cricket - Unfortunately, once again Rose Bay High School could not enter teams into the Summer Hockey or the Cricket rosters due to lack of interest.

Parenting Knowledge and Child Behaviour How much do you know about effective parenting? At some time or another all children misbehave or do things that their parents don t like. At the same time parents have many different ways or styles of dealing with these problems, and different beliefs about how best to raise children. If you are the parent of a child 2-10 years, the Parenting and Family Support Centre at the University of Queensland would love to hear from you. This research project is designed to increase our understanding of how parenting knowledge, family characteristics and child behaviour are related and to what extent they interact with one another. Ultimately, our goal is to be able to provide parents with more effective parenting programs. Participation involves confidentially completing a series of questionnaires that takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. If you would like to participate, please go to: Thank you for your time and participation. More information about the project is available from: Leanne Winter Parenting and Family Support Centre School of Psychology University of Queensland St Lucia QLD 4072 Circus Skills Jumping Jacks Trampoline Club Want to learn some cool new tricks to impress your friends??
