1 BELLARINE SECONDARY COLLEGE NEWSLETTER College Principal: Mrs Alison Murphy Assistant Principals: Ms Natalie Wood & Mr Wayne Johannesen Mr Pierre Grzybek & Mr Damian Marra DRYSDALE CAMPUS OCEAN GROVE CAMPUS PENINSULA DRIVE, DRYSDALE, VIC, SHELL ROAD, OCEAN GROVE, VIC, COLLEGE FAX: COLLEGE PHONE: Mon 30 October 2017 PRINCIPAL S REPORT The recent fortnight has been a celebration of student achievement. Congratulations to our talented art students and to our Year 12s on their graduation. Issue No. 16 Inside this issue Principal s Report The annual Art show was wonderful. The talent and creative expression exhibited was inspirational and illustrated the diversity within our students. The media studies films were outstanding representations of the creative and technical skills of each student. The visual communication, studio art and ceramics work exhibited from all year levels was excellent. Every year I am amazed at how our students come up with new ideas and explore new media in presenting them. I would like to thank our Art teaching team for their support and guidance of each student within their classes. Thank you to ex-bellarine student, Jesse Leaman for opening the show. Jesse has gone on to work in the film industry recently releasing an outstanding short film. Jesse spoke of his passion for the Arts and about the opportunities he had at Bellarine and how they impacted on his career choice and success. The whole school assembly held last Monday was a wonderful opportunity to acknowledge our student achievement across the year, to celebrate the graduation of our Year 12 class and induct the 2018 student leaders for the Drysdale Campus. The Ocean Grove Captains for 2018 have not yet been appointed. Thank you to the parents, grandparents, family and friends who attended the assembly. It is great to see the numbers of family members able to attend growing each year. We do not have many opportunities to showcase the talents and achievements of our students so these assemblies are indeed special events. As always, the music and drama performances were highlights of the assembly. The Year 7 music performance of Seven National Army by Daisy Perley, Keira O Toole, Maddison Barker and Elkin-Rose Wittenberg was outstanding and we very much look forward to further performances as the students involved move through the College. Congratulations to the Year 12 students on completing 13 years of secondary education. We wish you all the very best in the next phase of your life. Congratulations to the students appointed as 2018 Captains for the Drysdale Campus. I believe this will be a highly effective leadership team with students brining a range of interests and ideas. I look forward to working with them College Captains: Georgia Potter, Eilish Watson, Liam Pohl and Charlie Baker Corio House Captains: Aleesha Viola and Orlagh Davison Corio House Assistants: Gabbi Giles and Shayla McEwan Robertson Lonsdale House Captains: Charlotte Tilley and Chloe Dean Lonsdale House Assistants: Jessica Barry and AJ Shaw Nepean House Captains: Olivia Hart and Sean Williamson Nepean House Assistants: Gabby Peacock and Shannon Elliot Swan House Captains: Cooper Cartledge and Dayna Hourigan Swan House Assistants: Taia Young and Bree Abel Last Tuesday evening we held the 2017 Valedictory Dinner at The Pier in Geelong. It was a lovely evening with students, families and staff celebrating the conclusion of 13 years of formal education. The VET music students performed across the evening and showcased their exceptional skills. Thank you to the families who were able to attend this lovely dinner and share the experience with us. We wish all of the graduating class all the very best for 2018 and beyond. I am certain we will hear of the wonderful things they do as members of our community. Students participated in the Celebration Breakfast on Tuesday 24th October before leaving the campus for the final time and preparing for the Valedictory Dinner later that evening. We trust they perform at their very best in the end-of-year exams and in their search for employment and are successful in the next chapter of their lives. Good luck and please take care! Term 3 Report reflection and Term 4 Goals Year 9, 10 and 11 students have recently reflected on their Term 3 Report and set very specific goals for Term 4. Parents and guardians are encouraged to discuss this process with their student and clarify their specific goal for the final term of the year before exploring ways in which they can support their child to achieve further improvement in their learning. 3

4 DRYSDALE CAMPUS NEWS 2017 Annual Art Show Monday 23rd October saw the 2017 Annual Art Show. There was an enormous amount of preparation from the Arts department, as well as the students, to ensure a very successful show. It was a fabulous display of student artwork from Years 7-12, and as usual all attendees were amazed at the talent displayed by the students. We were honoured to have The Art Show officially opened by former student, Jesse Leaman. Jesse completed Year 12 at BSC in 2012 and since completing his studies with us he was successful in gaining a selection at Top Screen at ACME in Melbourne. At Top Screen, Jesse has produced a short film title Lawn starring Guy Pearce. Lawn has since featured at a number of film festivals world-wide. It was terrific to have Jesse return to BSC to speak with students, families and staff, to share his experiences and speak of post school opportunities. Bellarine Soccer Referees Wednesday 18th October the St Leonards, Portarlington, Pt Lonsdale and Wallington Primary schools held their annual Soccer Round Robin Competition at Portarlington. Each school entered two Boys and two Girls teams with students from Grades 5 and 6. Bellarine Secondary College supplied 6 referees to run the event. The referees were James Coles, Orson Juhasz, Thomas Hoare, Colby Erard-Purcell, Travis McMennemin and Sam Robertson. These students play soccer for local clubs on the weekend and it was a great opportunity for them to share their knowledge and love of the game. It was a warm day and the boys were kept busy refereeing consecutive games. All games ran smoothly which was a credit to our students who fulfilled their roles of instructing referees in a fair and diligent manner. Well done to all. Motivational Presentation On Thursday 26th, Year 9-11 students were presented with Take the Shot, a multimedia production, about students taking positive risks in life. These risks can be associated with their learning and education, work and family situations. Students were presented with a number of scenarios from young Australians and decisions they have made in their life to improve their own situations and also that of others. Students will use this presentation as a basis to create two short term goals for the remainder of Term 4 ads well as specific strategies to support them to can achieve these goals. A new presentation will occur in early 2018 to further develop the student s capacity and foresight regarding self-motivation, resilience and persistence. Scott McDonald & Louise Campbell Community Leaders Drysdale Campus Term 4 Mufti Day Tuesday 17th October, Swan House hosted our 4th Mufti day for the year. The day was enjoyed with student musical performances, the Year 12 colour run, BBQs and a general inclusive atmosphere. Students contributed a gold coin donation for the privilege of being out of uniform. All funds raised for the Term 4 Mufti day is being donated to GAWS. Up-Coming Assessments (CATs and Exams) With Term 4 in full swing it is a timely reminder for our Year 9, 10 and 11 students to begin organising themselves for their upcoming assessments, including CATs and Exams. CATs will occur in class time in 4-5 weeks and the exam period for Year 11 VCE subjects is Nov 21-24, and for Year 10 classes is Nov 28 Dec 1. Revision periods for both Year 10 and 11 subjects will occur in class, and normal school attendance applies. For both the Year 10 and 11 exam periods an exam timetable will be in place. This is new for the Year 10 students. During the exam period Year 10 and 11 students need to adhere to the following: No normal classes will be running Students need to be in full school uniform Students only need to attend when they have an exam Private study rooms will be allocated for students who are at school but do not have an exam. If a student is at school during class time and does not have an exam, they must attend the private study room. (For example, you have an exam period 1/2 and 3/4, you need to stay at school to wait for the bus, you need to attend the private study room period 5/6) Students need to sign in and out of the office when they arrive/depart All exams are 1.5 hours in duration, including reading time If you are absent, you need to call your teacher in the morning to let them know, and to arrange a resit time Exam timetables will be advertised soon. If you have a clash, or need to re-schedule, Year 10 students need to see Mr McDonald and Year 11 Ms Fawcett Uniform Matters Parents are asked to please support their students to ensure they are wearing the full school uniform. Unfortunately with the change in weather, and as the Term progresses, students at times become less vigilant in ensuring they are in uniform. We particularly ask that parents ensure that their students wear white socks with their summer dress, school shorts or PE uniform. 4

5 DRYSDALE CAMPUS NEWS Learning Walks Staff are currently involved in Learning Walks which involve members of the Principal Team and Leading Teachers visiting classrooms across the Drysdale Campus to support the continued implementation and development of the Bellarine Classroom. The Bellarine Classroom is the teaching practice which staff are developing and delivering across the College so that students receive a common and consistent learning experience in all classrooms. The model being implemented is based on the research and work of Robert Marzano and is considered best practice. The Learning Walks will provide valuable feedback on our teaching practice and help to bring continued improvement and consistency. Intermediate Sports Last Thursday the intermediate basketball and table tennis teams competed in the Bellarine/Geelong division sports day. The day began very wet so we were very pleased to be competing indoors. The boy s basketball finished off in a nail biting semi-final against Belmont. Bellarine was down in the last 30 seconds when Mitch Pescott scored a 3 pointer to even the scores. Unfortunately they were pipped at the post with Belmont scoring in the final second. As disappointing as this was the players should hold their heads high as they played 3 very competitive games for the day and showed fantastic sportsmanship. The girls team won 2 out of 3 games however this was not enough to see them into the semi final. The girls were excellent competitors and certainly made Geelong High fight for their win. The table tennis team did not bring the pennant home however enjoyed competing against other schools. Congratulations to all the competitors. Contacting the College Parents/Guardians are encouraged to contact your child s House Leader as the first point of contact if you have any questions/concerns or seek any assistance and/or support; Corio House Leader Lonsdale House Leader Nepean House Leader Swan House Leader Mrs Terri-Anne Finch Mrs Kristie Miles Mrs Senem Shamsilli Ms Jess Walsh Mrs Maddie Chaplin (Assistant) Ms Jan Brown (Assistant) Mrs Vanessa Wedding (Assistant) Ms Elise Bryce (Assistant) Mr Wayne Johannesen & Ms Natalie Wood Assistant Principals Drysdale Campus OCEAN GROVE CAMPUS NEWS Literacy Intervention Program This year the College has implemented the Fountas and Pinnell literacy intervention program. This program has targeted students who require some additional literacy support in Years 7, 8 and 9. Fountas and Pinnell is a comprehensive research-based intervention system that has been found to be effective in improving the literacy outcomes of students in both Australian and American schools. It is currently used by a number of primary schools in the Bellarine Peninsula area and many of our students are already familiar with the program. The program is implemented using small groups of three to four students. An intervention session generally involves a combination of reading, writing and word study. There is also an emphasis on teaching reading comprehension strategies and expanding students vocabulary. Sessions are designed to give students a range of skills and strategies they can use in their everyday classes. Students progress has been monitored through regular reading assessments. These assessments have shown that the program is having a positive impact on students literacy skills and is enabling them to become more confident in their reading ability. Transition Our Community Leaders Nick Ansell and Luke Skewes with Assistant Principal Pierre Grzybek have visited our eleven Partner schools during weeks 1-3. This is as part of our transition program and is preparing the Grade 6 students for their transition into Secondary School. At the moment we have an intake of 262 students for Year 7 in Building Works (Ocean Grove) We have been allocated a new module five portable due to the increase in student numbers. This has been placed on school grounds and is currently being fitted out for the 2018 school year. This is great news for our Campus and will be fully utilised as a learning space. Mufti Day Our recent Swan Mufti Day saw students dress in casual clothes and donate a gold coin toward the GAWS - Geelong Animal Welfare Society. It was terrific to see students and teachers enjoying the spirit of the day, mingling in the courtyard at lunch time during the spelling bee, thank-you Ms Alex Molinari and Ms Kelly Clitheroe for coordinating the sausage sizzle at lunch time and promoting the day around our campus on behalf of Swan House. 5

6 OCEAN GROVE CAMPUS NEWS Whole School Assembly The final Year 12 assembly was held on Monday the 23 rd October and this provided the student body the opportunity to farewell this cohort of students and wish them the best for the final stages of their learning here at Bellarine Secondary College. It is always a special event when we bring both campuses together, the Year 7 & 8 students enjoy the opportunity to join in with the senior students. Ocean Grove Campus Captains Skylah McLaren, Jordan Butwilowsky and House Leader Brooke Miller gave a report of the activities of our campus across the year. Thank you to the parents, grandparents and friends who attended the assembly, it was lovely to have you with us. Congratulations to Year 7 students Daisy Perley (guitar), Kiera O Toole (vocals), Maddi Barker (drums) and Elkin-Rose Wittenberg (bass) who performed Seven Nation Army. The skills and the confidence with which the students performed was amazing. Ready to Learn Students are reminded to present to all classes with the required equipment to ensure they make the most of every opportunity to achieve their absolute best. Parents and guardians are asked, in particular, to support students to ensure they are charging their laptops overnight to ensure they are fully charged for the next day s classes. Please Slow Down Parents and guardians are reminded to please slow down when entering the car park at the Ocean Grove Campus to drop off or pick up students. A number of staff and students have expressed concern at the speed at which some cars are travelling through this area. The safety of all is paramount. To that end, please slow down to help ensure the safety of other drivers, students being dropped off or picked up, staff and pedestrians using this space. Youth Advance trip to Lady Northcote Recreation Camp 2017 Every one of the participating students should receive recognition for their positive participation and great team work on the Youth Advance Camp. We had an action packed couple of days and were really lucky to benefit from great weather. The students that attended were: Anastasia Bickley, Tahlia Denham, Cooper Falconer, Kate Gladman, Conner Haines, Jai Harrison-Roberts, Bella Kemp, Brianna Leyden, Jasmin Monks, Mikayla Moorby, Zaryah Scott, Hannah Thompson, Piper McNaughton King, Madeline Martuccio, Jack Fox, Kayla Doheney and Tahlia Dahl. Kayla demonstrated great bravery when she attempted to rid her bedroom of a gigantic huntsman spider moult that turned out to be not a moult at all. Piper and Maddie Martuccio did an exceptional job designing and painting our Relay for Life Banners in preparation for the big event on the 28 th and 29 th October. Anastasia and Brianna did a great job stepping out of their comfort zone Conner Haines shone as a great team player and leader at all times. He had the greatest success on the leap of faith, worked hard on our Relay for Life banners, (He also offered to take the unfinished one back to school to complete) and teamed up with Kayla and Jasmin to prepare damper for us all to enjoy cooking around the campfire. Jai Harrison-Roberts and Jasmin took on major roles as our group photographers. Tahlia Denham and Tahlia Dahl participated in all team building activities with enthusiasm. Cooper, Jack and Mikayla owned the basketball court and warmly welcomed all those who wanted to join in. Zaryah Scott not only strengthened her teamwork skills but also claimed the mountain bike champion award. Hannah Thompson demonstrated smart thinking skills by outwitting her competitors in the balloon action game. Kayla, Piper and Bella worked tirelessly to ensure everyone was hauled up high to experience the rush of the giant swing. Every student who attended this camp came away knowing themselves and their team mates better. Every student challenged themselves by attempting the wide range of activities on offer. It was great to have Year 11 VCAL student Seth Petersen joining us. Seth is hoping to pursue a career in Community Services in the future. He was a great role model on this camp and also provided great support assisting to organise our media equipment and taking photos. A big thank you also to Mr Tim Micallef for joining us, for driving the bus and for providing his positive leadership at all times.
