1 INTERMEDIATE ALGEBRA Course Syllabus This syllabus gives a detailed explanation of the course procedures and policies. You are responsible for this information - ask your instructor if anything is unclear. Please feel free to come by my office when you need help. Dale P. Intermediate Algebra Units 1-5 Course Packet Hawkinson* *You will buy a Resources Card from the bookstore, and bring it to class or my office to receive your packet. Computer access and a modern browser having Adobe Flash & Javascript enabled Internet access (personal, public or university computing) K-STATE ONLINE (aka Canvas) online.ksu.edu Login, navigate to Dashboard or Courses & find MATH010 Intermediate Algebra. More details are given on page 4. CALCULATORS Please be sure you have a scientific calculator. A TI-30X IIS (or B) is suggested. Graphing calculators are permitted, but not recommended. Graphing algorithms will be used. [NOTE: cell phones, ipods, and all other electronic devices are not permitted during tests.] ONLINE LECTURES An online interactive lecture is to be viewed covering topics for each lesson. In the first section of the course packet there are lecture outlines two pages for each lecture. Complete the online lecture by filling in the notes and answering the questions as you proceed. The lecture must be completed in one sitting. (You may choose to stop before the end, but you will have to start over at the first screen when you return to your work.) The Credit Version of the lecture for each assigned day is available for a specified period of time. After that time, a Review Version of the lecture will be available to view as often as you wish, but not for credit points. ONLINE HOMEWORK HELPERS A Homework Helper is a set of four questions from the homework assignment which are to be completed online within a prescribed time frame. This provides interactive, guided completion of assigned questions covered in the lesson. CHALK TALKS In-class discussion and additional examples for each week s topics will be offered on some Fridays (see Course Schedule). This is a good time to get end-of-theweek help before an assignment due date

Each student may take this once, and if (s)he wants to try to achieve a better score it may be taken again (maximum 3 times). HOMEWORK All of the homework assignments are included in the course packet. Do all of the Exercises for the lesson in a manner consistent with the lecture. For each question, SHOW WORK in the space provided, using the blank facing page for extra room if needed. Your answers may be compared with the Key on the last few pages of the Unit. Each assignment includes an Insight a critical thinking application of the lesson s content that counts for one-third of the homework assignment grade. RECITATION CLASS During recitation class each week, questions concerning lecture notes and homework assignments will be discussed, graded written work will be returned, and an in-class open-note quiz will be given. The lowest 4 of 14 quiz scores will be dropped from the final course grade. SUBMISSION OF WRITTEN WORK Your work is to be organized with all lecture note sheets first, followed by the homework assignments. Please be sure your name and recitation class day/time are written on the first page. Staple and turn in your work to the grading box in Holton Hall 101. Due dates are listed in the Course Schedule. Late work will not be accepted. READINGS, UNIT REVIEWS & TESTS For each lesson, there is an online Reading to be done after the corresponding lecture. Extra Exercises are also available for additional practice. There is an online Unit Review to help with preparing for each Unit Test. There is no Unit 5 Test questions from Unit 5 will be included on the Final. GRADING Lecture Notes: 4 80 points (For each lecture, the online Credit Version is 3 points, and a clearly written set of notes is 1 point.) Homework Helpers: 4 80 points (Homework Helpers are 4 points each; partial credit is given.) Homework: points (For each lesson, the Homework exercises are 4 points, and the Insight is 2 points.) Weekly Quizzes: 5 50 points (A weekly quiz will be given during recitation class meetings. The lowest 4 scores will be dropped.) Weekenders: 5 50 points Unit Tests : points (Retake opportunities are provided; see the Course Schedule for details.) In courses where a large portion of the grade comes from exams, there often is a grading curve. However, in this course, 55% of the grade comes from assignments; also, two of the four Unit Tests may be retaken. The scale shown will be used to assign final course grades. 3 Accessing & Using the Online Course Content Log in to K-State Online (Canvas). Choose Dashboard or Courses and click online.ksu.edu MATH010 Intermediate Algebra. This will take you to the Canvas class Home page. Click Grades to view your scores for all currently graded materials. Go to MATH010 Online Content Home Page is a link to all of the course materials that are online. Click the Go to MATH010 Online Content Home Page link to load the page shown below. On your first visit, click the Click here to check browser requirements link. Take some time to acquaint yourself with the resources accessible from the menu

On days when a lecture is assigned, click the lecture you want to view. Lectures are not available for credit until the date shown in the Course Schedule.

If you are viewing the Credit Version you will see a Login box. Enter your recitation day/time and your name, then click OK. (If you are viewing the Review Version there will not be a Login box.

After the assigned lecture period has expired, the lecture will still be accessible, but it will be the Review Version rather than Credit Version. The content is the same in both versions. If you are viewing the Credit Version you will see a Login box. Enter your recitation day/time and your name, then click OK. (If you are viewing the Review Version there will not be a Login box.) Each lecture begins with a short video clip related to the topic, followed by some general instructions. Use the two Lecture Outline pages from the course packet to write the notes as they are given. As you proceed, you will be asked questions which you must answer correctly to progress. You should always try your best to answer each question. You are not penalized for a wrong response, and you get many opportunities to try again. Feedback is given to help you answer correctly. For the Credit Version be sure to continue all the way to the last slide or you will not receive credit for your work. Basic Lesson Study Plan: View the Lecture, and then the online Text Reading. After these, turn to the Homework assignment and complete the online Homework Helper questions first, and then the remaining exercises and the Insight. Make notes about info or assigned questions with which you need help. Attend recitation to get your questions answered and take the in-class quiz
