1 Syllabus: Package Design Continuing Education-FALL 11 CE*2904C Package Design 10 Tuesdays, 7:00 10:00pm, Oct 4-Dec 6 Sarah Gager Lochrie, sarah@sarahgager.com Course Description This course emphasizes the application of graphic design elements to various forms of packaging. Packages are analyzed and positioned from a marketing point of view. Brand marks, visual graphics and color schemes are developed for individual products and extended product lines. This class is geared to those interested in product packaging and graphic design as well as those seeking to create portfolio-quality design work. Course Prerequisite: CE 2407 Adobe Illustrator or equivalent experience Course Objective The objective of this course is to design portfolio-quality package design by working with 3 dimensional design, type, color and composition. Students will be expected to identify and target their intended audience through research and client briefs. A large emphasis will be put on class critiques where students will learn how to critique as well as how to use and apply criticism from the critiques. Course Assessment Students will be assessed on attendance (3 missed classes and you will receive an automatic failing grade), class preparedness, class participation and project completion. Please note, you will be expected to complete at least 3 hours or homework a week. Course Materials: USB flash drive (PC & MAC compatible) 4G minimum, x-acto knife, rubber cement, pencils, graphics pens, grid paper, sketch book, cutting board, metal ruler, scissors, double sided tape, 20x30 foam core (at least 4 pieces) Handouts/Templates: You will be proveded with handouts on perspective drawing and critique vocabulary. You can find templates for a basic 3D box, 3D pyramid box and 3D cylinder on the server in the templates folder. Please us these as jumping off points then designing you flat packaging. Review -syllabus -printing facilities -supplies -homework -grading Show Samples Quick Computer Review (download corresponding lesson from the server) Photoshop: Rendering Illustrator: 3D Functions, Perspective Drawing, Technical Drawing Tips on hand sketching in Perspective Review project #1 - Redesign -choose product to redesign -do at least 3 hours of research on the product Questions to answer: -what do you like/not like about the product s current packaging design -find examples of similar products -what does/does not work about competitor s packaging design -who uses this product -where do you buy it -how is it sold -how is it displayed -how do you want to redesign the packaging (find inspirational images) -who buys this product (gender, age, economic situation, where do they shop, how do they choose the products they buy (i.e. word of mouth, research, survey through social media, etc) suburban/urban, level of social consciousness, level of education, etc.) -how will you target the customer through design

3 Must bring to class -all research printed out or in digital format (**CLEARLY laid out**) -be prepared to discuss your findings -show at least 3 hand sketches Session Project #1 - Redesign Present Homework finding Tips: -Go through your steps that got you to where you are now. -Talk about what you found easy or difficult about the process and how you feel about the results. -Talk about any unresolved design issues you are struggling with. Class Critique Tips: -Ask questions about the project. -Talk about what is/isn t working in the design. -Share your thoughts and ideas, but always be respectful and try to avoid I comments in the negative, i.e. I don t like..., I don t get it..., etc. Session Present Project #1 Review Project #2A-Designing from a Client Brief **bring x-acto blades, cutting boards, rubber cement etc. to next class for assembly demo**
