2 IPA's History The Indianapolis Professional Association is a charitable 501(c)(3) organization founded in October 1984 by six local attorneys and one judge to promote and develop the goals of education, economic development, and professional networking in the African-American community. For the past 25 years, IPA has hosted an Achievement Awards Breakfast each spring to give cash scholarships to high-achieving high school seniors. Since 1988, the annual Youth Empowerment Breakfast has honored the community service of youth-oriented organizations, youth leaders, adult leaders, and other young people who are succeeding despite challenges. IPA has held a networking luncheon each year since 2004, and also hosts business card exchanges. IPA's Mission To promote and develop the education and economy of African-Americans and to encourage others to do so; to be a network for African-Americans to gather and to discuss and exchange ideas; to afford assistance and training to African-Americans and others in various professions, businesses and occupations; and to act as role models and mentors for African-Americans and others throughout the community. 3 SPEAKER: Reverend Charles J. Ellis, Jr. Indianapolis Ten Point Coalition Reverend Charles J. Ellis, Jr. hails from Jeffersonville, Indiana where he was born to two teachers in This foundation of respect for education and led to his earning a B.A. in speech communications and broadcast production from Western Kentucky University and a Master of Divinity from Southern Baptist Theological Seminary. Pastor Ellis has always worked in the community to serve youth. During his time in college, Pastor Ellis directed Happening Day Camps. These camps were designed to give youth an outdoor camping experience, a good meal, and life skills during the summer. Moreover, Pastor Ellis also directed Indianapolis Public Schools Outdoor Education Camps and worked as an Extension Educator for 4-H through Purdue Cooperative Extension. Pastor Ellis has also led such groups as the City of Peace Ministerial Coalition and Ministers on the Move, and the Council of Presidents (C.O.P) in order to help us form a more just and safe community in Indianapolis. Since being involved in ministry, Pastor Ellis has been at the forefront of addressing community ills such as violence, rampant unemployment, and re-entry for returning citizens. Pastor Ellis currently serves as Executive Director of the Indianapolis Ten Point Coalition. Pastor Ellis currently serves as Executive Director of the Indianapolis Ten Point Coalition. He is currently the pastor of the 25 th Street Baptist Church. Reverend Ellis is also a proud husband and father. MODERATOR: Mr. Steve Jefferson Journalist, WTHR-TV Channel 13 Crime beat reporter Steve Jefferson joined the WTHR-TV Eyewitness News Team in June 2002 after working in the Ohio, Georgia, South Carolina, Mississippi and Oregon television markets. The Dayton, Ohio native has received several honors, including the Edward R. Murrow Award, an Emmy nomination, and Best Newscast recognition from the Associated Press. Mr. Jefferson has reported on major news events of our time, including the Atlanta bombings, and natural disasters such as the Georgia floods, Hurricane George, and Hurricane Katrina. The Wright State University journalism graduate is a member of the National Association of Black Journalists and Kappa Alpha Psi Fraternity, Inc. Mr. Jefferson serves on the board of directors of a number of local organizations in addition to volunteering in the community with Crime Stoppers of Central Indiana, Indianapolis Press Club, Big Brothers, and Center for Leadership Development. He is also a member of the 100 Black Men of Indianapolis. When not social networking on Facebook, Mr. Jefferson enjoys biking on the Monon Trail.
