1 Bethlehem Area School District ESOL English for Speakers of Other Languages First grade students at Lincoln Elementary take turns reading original text they added to a wordless book from Reading A-Z. The story is titled, He Runs. Students write their own two lines of text to match the illustration. Center for Language Assessment (CLA) La Campana - Fall 2015 Goodbye Summer, Hello Fall! Students enjoyed learning facts about animals at the Philadelphia Zoo. They also used their map reading skills to find their way to their favorite animal exhibits.

2 La Campana Fall 2015 Summer School a Sensational Success as Students Quilted Their Memories! This summer, our ESOL K-12 students Quilted Memories as they worked hard learning English through various classroom activities and taking educational fieldtrips. We thank all the teachers, community service volunteers and CLA office staff for a successful summer school experience. Fishing Fun on the Freemansburg Canal Students enjoyed learning about fishing after touring the mule barn and learning about the history of the Freemansburg Canal and its role in the development of their community.

3 Fall 2015 La Campana Poetry Abdulelah (left), kindergartner at Governor Wolf, is reviewing his Fundations sounds. Duong B. Tran, a senior at Liberty High School, pictured above with teacher, Anne Silfies, participated in the Favorite Poem Project of Bethlehem by reading Hai Dua Tre (Two Children) by To Huu. The national Favorite Poem Project is dedicated to celebrating, documenting, and encouraging poetry s role in the lives of Americans. School to Work in Action This great group of bilingual BASD students (left) are given life changing opportunities at St. Luke s University Health Network. Their commitment to the community is extraordinary. Triple Threat for ESOL Teachers! ESOL teachers, (below) lead by Carole Schachter, work on ipads, laptops and Chrome books in order to learn how to better integrate technology into their lessons and prepare students for the online WIDA assessments.

4 La Campana Fall 2015 High school summer school students practiced leadership skills in providing physical fitness activities for the elementary school students. Students in summer school brought in favorite clothing pieces and scraps of fabric to create and stuff their own quilted pillows.

Broughal students, Linda and Katty learn the differences between formal letter writing and informal texting. Formal letters were written and mailed, before they wrote informal messages to their teacher as she gets well at home. ESOL teachers link the old and the new by preparing our ELLs to be responsible, caring, and respectful using social media while learning letter writing!! Second grade ELLs (right) from Freemansburg in Ms. Maurer s class read the book, The Little Red Hen. They made stick puppet characters to act out the play. They then brainstormed the recipe for making bread. With the help from a recipe, they learned all about how to make bread. Now they know all the ingredients in bread. Unlike the animal characters that didn't help make the bread, these students all pitched in to help make bread, and boy was it good!!!! The students showed the ingredients from the recipe posted on the easel. This is Evelin Vaca Avila, a Thomas Jefferson second grader, who recently arrived from Ecuador. She reads beautifully in her native language and shared her skills by reading a book to her classmates - in Spanish!

7 Fall 2015 La Campana Former ESOL student and Liberty High School 2015 graduate, Josue Vazquez, has found his passion working as an emergency room technician. Josue was hired by St.Luke s Hospital after completing the School to Work program and successfully meeting employment requirements. The 8th grade ESOL students at EHMS have been reading about and researching the Mexican holiday, Dia de los Muertos. After reading about the holiday and how it is celebrated, groups researched the different styles of masks, how to make sugar skulls, how to make pan de muerto, and how to prepare the altars. The groups shared their research and creations. El Dia De Los Muertos
