1 General Information Extraordinary Eggs (Life Cycle of Animals) Class: CI-5055 Subject: Science Lesson Title: Extraordinary Eggs (Life Cycle of Animals) Grade Level: Second Grade Purpose The purpose of this lesson is: For students to work cooperatively to research the life cycle of an animal which comes from an egg and create a project using Smart 10 to depict the life cycles. Objectives Content Objectives Given a research assignment and a demonstration, students will be able to identify the stages of a given animal s life cycle. 1. ELLs will become familiar with the key vocabulary associated with life cycles. (Baby, Adult, Stages, Birth, and Cycle) 2. ELLs will investigate using photos and description to describe the process of the life cycle of a given animal. 3. ELLs will create a life cycle map of a given animal using Smart 10. Language Objectives Given a research project, a lecture, a demonstration, etc., all students will be able to: 1. ELLs will read an easier text on life cycles to enrich their vocabulary. 2. ELLS will discuss/list the main points of the stages of the life cycle of their given animal. 3. ELLS will rewrite the main points of a given animal s life cycle using Smart 10. Culture Objectives Given a class discussion on a concept: 1. ELLs will pair with a native English speaking student to differentiate between countries, cultures, regions, etc. 2. If the ELL student is not native to the United States, the teacher will choose an animal which hatches from an egg from the student s native country.

Science: Goal 1: The learner will conduct investigations and build an understanding of life cycles Describe the life cycle of animals including: Birth Developing into an adult Reproducing Aging and Death Technology: Goal 1: The learner will understand important issues of a technology based society and will exhibit ethical behavior in the use of computer and other technologies Identify and discuss appropriate and safe behaviors online Recognize an individual s rights of ownership to computer generated work Identify online resources as the works of individuals/groups/companies and discuss why citing resources is necessary. Goal 2: The learner will demonstrate knowledge and skills in the use of technology and with other technologies Recognize, discuss, and use word processing as a tool to enter/edit, print, and save assignments Identify and use correct finger placement for home row keys Identify and use menu/tool bar features/functions in word processing documents Identify and use multimedia tools to combine text and graphics as a class/group assignment.

3 Teacher Materials Pencils Egg paper Computer Smart 10 Downloaded pictures Books on various animals which hatch from an egg Slip of paper to place in eggs of an animal which hatches from an egg Some animals to use: stingray, penguin, Cardinal, gecko, alligator, spider, crocodile, shark, and snake. *Due to copyright laws the teacher will need to find own pictures and download them for the students. The students could even draw the animals. Content, Procedures, and Instructional Strategy This lesson is an ending activity for a unit on life cycles. Activity 1- Before the start of this lesson, the teacher needs to divide her class into teams of two based on ability and work ethic. Prepare plastic eggs (one for each group of two) with strip of paper naming an animal which hatches from an egg. Teacher will read An Extraordinary Egg by Leo Lionni After reading the book, teacher will assign groups and give each group an egg and paper (see attached). Teacher will give ELL students/ Autistic student an egg with a predetermined animal such as a chicken or another (depending on if the ELL student is native to the United States.) The teacher then will tell the students they will be working with their partner to research an animal which hatches from an egg and then they will create the life cycle using Smart 10. Students will predict what animal they might get before they receive their egg. After receiving the egg, students will fill out the prediction part of the sheet. Students will start researching using pulled books from the library on the animals. Teacher will provide ELL student(s)/autistic student(s) easy leveled picture book depicting the life cycle of a chicken or of the predetermined animal. The students will fill in the Correct Answer part of the paper with their partner. The Teacher Assistant can provide extra assistance for the ELL student(s) and/or Autistic student(s). If students are having problems locating some information in their animal books, the teacher should help them research on the internet.

4 Activity 2- Teacher will take students to the computer lab and model for the students how to create a cycle map, change the background color, and drag pictures over from the previously created gallery folder in Smart 10. (Students could even draw their own pictures.) Students will work on creating a two page Smart product with the first page consisting of a cycle map with a title, at least three pictures depicting the various stages of the animal s life cycle, and a different background color. On the second page students need at least one picture, three other facts about the students animal, and a background color. ELL student(s) and Autistic student(s) will need to use newly learned vocabulary words in their projects. Activity 3- Conclusion Students will share their projects and teach the rest of the class about their animal s life cycle. Activity 4- Assessment The teacher will use the rubric to compile the score of the projects. 5 Instructional Technology Used for Teaching Teacher use only-teacher used computer to help students research animal life cycle on the internet. Teacher used the computer to find pictures for students projects. Teacher helper presentation tools- Teacher used Smart 10 software, teacher computer, and projector to model what the student s need to put in their projects. Teacher made resource for students- Teacher downloaded and compiled a photo gallery folder of various stages of different animal s life cycles. Student use only- Student used computer to create life cycle projects. Student helper- Student used Smart 10 to compile researched information into a project.
