4 Visual Arts The natural beauty of Rockingham County has inspired generations of folk and fine artists. There s a sense of history evident in the work you see here, including drawing, painting, photography, pottery, sculpting and stained glass. The county is an environment that nurtures, supports and takes pride in a broad cadre of artisans. Locally made pottery is both functional and unique.
5 Hidden Gem: Brad Spencer Brad Spencer s medium is as common as the clay in Rockingham County: brick. A tour of Rockingham County needs to include a sampling of his fascinating public art and sculptures. Spencer designs walls and forms of traditional building bricks, then sculpts illustrative designs into the face. Spencer bonded with Rockingham County as a young artist who had earned an MFA from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro and decided to make a home for his work in an affordable small town. He s worked here for over 25 years and participates in the local arts scene as an innovator and an instructor. Public art has the ability to enhance people s daily lives aesthetically, intellectually, emotionally, educationally or otherwise. It is a tremendous responsibility with intense rewards. 6 Visual Arts The striking mural in is one of two well-known public artworks in the county and it is a fixture in the revitalized downtown district blossoming for several years. It showcases the city s rich history and provides a familiar backdrop for community events and festivities. The mural is located at the corner of South Scales and Gilmer Streets. s heritage is illustrated in the downtown mural.
7 Visual Arts River Boat Men is as fascinating as its subject. The Dan and Mayo Rivers were once plied by rugged bateaux (boats) often captained by free African-Americans in the 18th and 19th centuries. This public art mural in s Olde Leaksville district captures this tradition of early river commerce. This work was created as part of the inaugural regional Bricolage Arts Festival. It is the backdrop for the small park found at the corner of Washington and Henry Streets. The remarkable history of Rockingham County is depicted in s River Boat Men mural.
8 Performing Arts Music is home grown here with traditions as old as America. You can still hear it in rural styles from gospel to early jazz to traditional fiddle tunes. Authentic and widely-revered gospel singers, The Hoppers and Janet Paschal, along with generations of banjo players, guitarists and singers give Rockingham County a living history you can trace back hundreds of years. 9 Hidden Gem: Charlie Poole Legacy The influence of Rockingham County in the American canon of traditional string music is significant, thanks in part to the life and work of Charlie Poole. Though his life was short Poole lived from he was a major influence on the development of roots music from Bill Monroe to Hank Williams. In the international community of old-time music enthusiasts, Poole s catalog of recordings and word-of-mouth history are legendary. Poole lived in the town of Spray, which is now part of. He led the North Carolina Ramblers to worldwide acclaim. His sound and style were steeped in Rockingham County culture. Rockingham County recognizes this great legacy each year with the Charlie Poole Music Festival, an event that draws fans and musicians from around the globe for performances, competitions and fun. 10 Performing Arts The stage is active and energetic here, thanks to the Theatre Guild of Rockingham County. Formed in 1989, the Theatre Guild regularly performs three main stage productions, as well as two to three children s dramatic performances each year. Past performances have included The Sound of Music, Grease, Our Town and The Wizard of Oz. The Theatre Guild performing Children of.
11 Performing Arts Rockingham Community College plays a vital role in the county s arts community. Not only does the college educate and train students in a variety of arts but it is also the location of many performances and art shows. The college hosts an annual Cultural Events Series that includes a number of musical and stage performances. Because the college is equipped with an auditorium and amphitheater, it is often the location of the main stage shows of the Theatre Guild. A variety of performing arts are hosted at Rockingham Community College.
12 Heritage Crafts A tour of the arts in Rockingham County would not be complete without heritage crafts. This area has a vibrant legacy of skilled craftspeople creating original works in clay, wood, metal, photography, glass, fibers and other media you can find throughout the county. Annual festivals and events as well as local studios and specialty shops showcase beautiful works you ll find nowhere else. The Rockingham County Farmer s Market displays the county s heritage crafts each week from April to November in the Market Gallery at the former stables of Chinqua-Penn Plantation. 13 Hidden Gem: Weaving & Fiber Arts The surrounding countryside is home to a number of weavers and spinners, often using locally-raised wool. At the Rockingham County Farmer s market between May and October you can buy hand spun yarn along with goat milk soap from area fiber artists. These artists sell their work in local shops and by special commission one-of-a-kind baby blankets are a popular request. Spinners, weavers (fabric and baskets), knitters and crocheters make up this genre, promising art enthusiasts plenty of original goods to choose from in the county. A variety of woven & fiber arts are found here.
14 Studios & Galleries A number of working studios are waiting for you throughout Rockingham County. Local studios often host events and seasonal open houses to showcase their work. In addition to studios, art lovers can view art on display in some of the county s governmental buildings, public libraries, Dan River Art Market and various art shows at Rockingham Community College. 15 Hidden Gem: Hawk Spirit Studio Acclaimed in both pottery and glasswork, Bill and Susan Moore live and work on a farm near that has been in their family for about 200 years. Their workspace on this historic land is Hawk Spirit Studio, a quiet pastoral setting in which clay and glass are worked into original expressions. Together, the Moores have received awards and recognition at numerous exhibitions and events. They have created commissioned works for local awards, such as the Charlie Poole Lifetime Achievement Award, the Clyde Hooker Awards and the Road Race Awards. The Moore s signature creations are Rockingham County favorites that have gained national attention. Artwork created by Bill & Susan Moore of Hawk Spirit Studio.
