1 VIDEO 1: FOUNDATION HIGH SCHOOL PROGRAM OVERVIEW This script and slide view can be used as you view Video 1 of the Foundation High School Program series. Foundation High School Program House Bill 5 Welcome Lewisville students, parents and staff. This is the first in a series of videos created by the Guidance and Counseling Department regarding the new foundation high school program. This graduation plan was passed as part of House Bill 5 in June Additional videos and documents are available to guide you as you navigate the requirements of the new Foundation High School Program.
2 Slide 2 General Overview House Bill 5 changed the graduation programs from Minimum (MHSP), Recommended (RHSP), and Distinguished Achievement (DAP) to a single Foundation High School Program (FHSP) House Bill 5 made sweeping changes to the graduation requirements for Texas students. The current Minimum High School Program (MHSP), Recommended High School Program (RHSP), and the Distinguished Achievement program or DAP, will transition to one Foundation High School Program (FHSP). Within the foundation high school program students have options to earn multiple Endorsements a Distinguished Level of Achievement (or DLA) and Performance Acknowledgements.
3 Slide 3 Transition The Foundation High School Program becomes effective with the Freshman class of Students enrolled in high school prior to will have the choice to complete their current (MHSP, RHSP, or DAP) graduation program or to transition to the new Foundation High School Program. Students entering high school in are required to graduate on the Foundation High School program. However, Students enrolled in high school prior to the school year may have the option of continuing on their current graduation plan or transitioning to Foundation High School Program.
4 Slide 4 Foundation Options Foundation Program 22 State credits o Not an available option until completion of Sophomore year Foundation+ Endorsement 26 State credits Distinguished Level of Achievement 26 credits o LISD Default Graduation Plan Performance Acknowledgements There are three options within the Foundation High School Graduation Program. The basic Foundation diploma requires 22 state credits for graduation. This option is not available to students until after the completion of the sophomore year and requires parent and school administrative approval. The Foundation with Endorsement requires 26 state credits for graduation. And the Distinguished Level of Achievement replaces the current Distinguished Achievement Program (DAP) as the highest graduation plan in the state of Texas. The Distinguished Level of Achievement is the default plan for all LISD students on the Foundation High School Program. More information of each of these plans is available later in this video. Students on any graduation plan may also earn Performance Acknowledgments. For more information on Performance Acknowledgements, please refer to the High School Course Description Guide.

Students must select courses from Computer Science I, II, or II to satisfy this requirement. (Some exceptions may apply for students with disabilities) One credit of Fine Art And Five elective credits

In LISD, all students are currently required to have English I, English 2, English 3, and English 4 for a total of 4 English credits. The new Foundation plan replaces the English 4 requirement with an Advanced English requirement, allowing students the flexibility to select other English courses to satisfy this requirement Courses currently approved by TEA to meet this requirement are listed in this chart. This list of courses is also available in both the High School Course Description Guide (CDG) and the Parent/Student Guide (PSG) to the Foundation High School Program.
7 Slide 7 Recommended Foundation+ Endorsements English 1 English 2 English 3 English 4 or Advanced English Algebra 1 Geometry Algebra 2 or Other Math Fourth Math Pre-Calculus Mathematical Models Foundations for College Math Engineering Mathematics AP Calculus AB AP Calculus BC AP Statistics AP Computer Science Dual Credit Math Locally Developed Math Course 2 (.5) Credits of Different Math Courses Currently, students graduating on the Recommended High School Program are required to have four Mathematics credits, Algebra 1, Geometry, Algebra 2 and an Advanced Math. The new foundation program allows students the flexibility to select Algebra or an alternate math. Courses currently approved by TEA to meet both the third and fourth Math requirement are listed here.
8 Slide 8 In the Science area, students are currently required to have four science credits, Biology, Chemistry, Physics and a Fourth Science With the new foundation plan, students have the option of taking either Chemistry, Physics, or Integrated Physics and Chemistry as their second Science Students have the option of taking any of the science courses listed here for their third and fourth science requirement. Students are encouraged to take the most challenging courses to allow them the flexibility of multiple endorsement options and to ensure they meet requirements for college admissions. Again, these lists are available in both the HS CDG and the Parent/Student Guide.
9 Slide 9 In LISD, all students are required to successfully complete four social studies credits, World Geography, World History, United States History, and one-half credit each in Economics and U.S. Government. The Foundation plan has created flexibility within this content area, allowing students a choice of EITHER World History or World Geography, but does not require both. However, students are strongly encouraged to take both World Geography and World History Since both World Geography and W. History or not required, students will have the option of taking another elective course in its place. That course could include any other social studies course OR Any course available in the HS Course Description Guide.

History U.S. History Govt & Eco History Speech Elective Course The previous graduation plan required that all students complete one-half speech credit by successfully completing either Communications Applications or Professional Communication. That requirement has been removed with the Foundation plan Allowing students an opportunity to select another elective course in its place

The new graduation plan expands that option to include world languages or Computer Programming Language. Students choosing to satisfy this requirement with the Computer Programming classes must select courses from Computer Science I, II, or III. There are exceptions to this requirement for students with documented disabilities. Please see page 60 in the course description guide for more information.

Students must earn one credit in each. Previously students must successfully complete 5.5 electives. The Foundation High School program requires the four credits towards an Endorsement and 3 additional state electives. The total state credits required remains at 26.
13 Slide 13 Endorsement Requirements Student must indicate (in writing) an endorsement he/she intends to earn upon entering 9 th grade Student will be allowed to change their endorsement during each of their high school years The next portion of this presentation is a brief overview of the Foundation HS Program Endorsements. HB 5 requires that all students indicate in writing an endorsement he or she intends to earn upon entering 9 th grade. This process will be completed during the course registration process this spring. Students and parents will confirm that endorsement will high school counselors and complete a personal graduation plan prior end of their freshman year. Students are also allowed numerous opportunities to change their Endorsement throughout their high school career. More
14 information is available in additional videos and in the LISD Parent/Student Guide to the Foundation High School Program Slide 14 LISD Endorsement Options All five Endorsement options approved by the state are available in LISD Within four of the five endorsement areas, student may select either a Career & Technical (CTE) or Non- Career & Technical (Non-CTE) pathway LISD offers course in all five endorsement area. Within all but the Arts and Humanities Endorsement, students may pursue a pathway in either Career and Technical courses (offered at the LISD Career Centers or on campus) or Non-Career and Technical courses, available at the high school campus.

The Arts and Humanities Endorsement allows students to take courses directly related to Political Science, World Languages, Cultural Studies, English Literature, History and Fine Arts The Business & Industry Endorsement allows students to take courses directly related to a number of career fields including Marketing, Accounting, Finance, Architecture and many more The Multidisciplinary Endorsement may be earned by completing advanced CTE courses which prepare a student to enter the workforce successfully or to graduate under the Distinguished Level of Achievement The Public Services Endorsement includes courses directly related to Education and Training, Law Enforcement, Culinary Arts & Hospitality, and Health Sciences The fifth and final Endorsement is Science, Technology, Engineering and Math (or STEM). This endorsement requires successful completion of courses directly related to Science, including Environmental Science, Technology, including Computer Science, Engineering, and Advanced Mathematics

17 Slide 17 Distinguished Level of Achievement 26 credits A student may earn a Distinguished Level of Achievement by completing: o Curriculum requirements for the FHSP; o Curriculum requirements for at least one endorsement; o 4 credits in mathematics, which must include Algebra II; and o 4 credits in Science; Within the Foundation High School Program, students may also earn a Distinguished Level of Achievement. Students must complete the Curriculum requirements of the FHSP Curriculum requirements for at least one endorsement Four credits in Math to include Algebra 2 And Four credits in Science
18 Slide 18 Distinguished Level of Achievement Students must earn a Distinguished Level of Achievement (DLA) in order to be eligible for Top 10% Automatic Admission to public institutions of higher education in the state of Texas. It is important to note that students MUST earn a Distinguished Level of Achievement in order to be eligible for Top 10% Automatic Admission to public universities in the state of Texas.
