2 Position Specification The College of Architecture and Environmental Design at invites applications and nominations for the position of Dean. The Dean of the College of Architecture and Environmental Design (CAED) will play a key leadership role in advancing the mission, operations and service of the College, building on the strong legacy of the past, while charting a course for an exciting and transformative journey over the next decade. The College of Architecture and Environmental Design offers unique opportunities for interdisciplinary exploration with degrees in architecture, architectural studies, interior design, landscape architecture, urban design and healthcare design. Home to 692 students, 64 full- and part-time faculty, and 19 staff, the CAED will occupy a brand new building in 2016, designed by the award-winning firm Weiss/Manfredi. The $40 million, 107,000 square-foot building will be the first LEED Platinum building on the campus. To complement its presence on the Kent main campus, the CAED includes the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative located in nearby downtown Cleveland and the Florence Study Abroad Program located in the historic center of Florence, Italy. College of Architecture and Environmental Design The mission of the College of Architecture and Environmental Design is to (a) educate and foster creative and responsible individuals to study, understand, design and enrich the built environment and (b) support research, disseminate knowledge and collaborate with communities and public organizations. With an interdisciplinary, collaborative, and exploratory culture, as well as faculty who bring diverse expertise and experience, CAED offers a variety of programs and degrees to students, including two fully-accredited professional programs, a liberal arts design study program, education abroad options and several graduate degrees. Programs focus on preparing students for professional practice. Current CAED students come from 19 states and 21 countries, with 12.5% of students from outside the U.S. They are taught by 19 tenure-track faculty, 8 non-tenure-track faculty, and 37 part-time faculty. Students entering CAED have the highest high school GPAs and highest ACT/SAT scores compared with those enrolled in other Kent State colleges. CAED also has the highest ratio of students in the Honors College of any college at. In Fall 2015, CAED enrolled 612 undergraduates and 80 graduate students across the following programs: B.S. in Architecture B.A. in Architectural Studies B.A. in Interior Design Master of Architecture Master of Urban Design Master of Landscape Architecture 1 of 9
3 Master of Healthcare Design M.S. in Architecture and Environmental Design Graduate Certificate in Healthcare Facilities Graduate Certificate in Urban Design While most CAED students study on the Kent Campus, those studying either Urban Design or Landscape Architecture and a subset of those pursuing the M.Arch. degree study at the Cleveland Urban Design Collaborative (CUDC), Kent State s urban design outreach practice in downtown Cleveland. At CUDC, students investigate real-world problems facing urban places, focusing on Cleveland and similar cities, while also addressing far-reaching global concerns. They meet with and respond to community members and local officials groups also represented on studio juries, along with design professionals. In some cases, students work helps to shape the civic development agenda, providing a focus around which citizens and officials can work together. The CUDC was selected for exhibition in the 13 th International Venice Architecture Biennale and received the 2014 National Planning Achievement Award for Public Outreach from the American Planning Association. Each year, CAED provides the opportunity for all students within the College to have an educational experience in Florence, Italy. Students experience the historical evolution of European art, architecture and urbanism, as well as contemporary design and the ongoing modernization of European cities. Kent State s home in Florence is the Palazzo dei Cerchi, a medieval palace in the heart of the city, built in the 13 th century and completely restored in Beginning in 2016, the Florence location will move to the Palazzo Vittori, a 1420 AD Renaissance palace providing additional space for studios. Approximately twothirds of Architecture students and one-half of Interior Design students spend a semester in Europe. The Architecture Registration Examination pass rate by KSU graduates is 8% higher than the national average, and graduates of the Architecture program have leadership roles in over 90% of firms in northeast Ohio. The program is nationally accredited by the National Architectural Accrediting Board (NAAB), whose visitation team praised the program for having nine student performance criteria met with distinction, including Comprehensive Design. The Interior Design program is ranked 4 th in the 12-state Midwest Region by the national magazine Design Intelligence. Graduates have had a 100% pass rate on the NCIDQ exam since 2010, and they hold a leadership role in eight of the top 10 Interior Design firms in the U.S. Ninety percent of Interior Design students secure jobs before graduation. The program is nationally accredited by the Council for Interior Design Accreditation (CIDA). During the next five years, research will focus on addressing major challenges we face as a society principally health, sustainability, and preparation of the professional for increasingly changing world views. The College and University are committed to increasing external funding by providing faculty with research support infrastructure, recruiting high-quality graduate and undergraduate students, creating a collaborative research culture, maintaining current public outreach, and developing new academic, corporate and government partnerships. 2 of 9
4 CAED s New Home has begun construction on a new facility for the CAED, designed by the firm Weiss/Manfredi. The building is placed on the Lefton Esplanade, the primary connection between the city of Kent and the University, engaging not only design students but also the campus and city as a whole. Approaching from the west, it will be the first impression of the University. The building s architecture and environmental design reflect the nature of an exceptional design college. Such excellence requires image, form, performance and sustainability, as well as practicality as a flexible educational tool. With four floors plus a basement, the building will also serve as a teaching tool. The corridor in the basement will have window openings into the mechanical room for student tours and observation; the Geo-well field vault will have a window opening allowing students to see the individual well field circuits and manifold below grade. An exposed concrete frame and various concrete finishes will also prove valuable to student learning. Electrical, mechanical and plumbing systems in some areas will be left exposed to help students understand their placement, size and function inside a building. Two 60-person classrooms, one 120-person classroom and one 200-person classroom all provide state of the art audio/visual instructional technology, as well as multi-functional, flexible furniture to support any pedagogy. Approximately one-third of the basement will be dedicated to shop space for student fabrication and faculty research, including wood shop, digital fabrication, metal shop, wind tunnel, edaphic lab, materials testing lab and environment lab. Interior design will have a much improved materials library and reserve, as well as a lighting lab. A permanent gallery space to exhibit works of art from private collections will be one of the primary functions of the first floor, extremely visible to all visitors. The Center for Architecture and Environmental Design will: Present Kent State as an economic and design force in northeast Ohio; Envision the future of architecture where aesthetics and performance are indistinguishable; Offer flexibility on all levels: spaces, systems and offices; Facilitate collaboration by creating non-traditional gathering and encounter spaces; Allow evolution in technology; Function as a research project for materials and systems; Reflect the cultural and educational traditions that nurture students to become passionate about service to society; Maximize the interaction of faculty, students and administration; 3 of 9
