Pre-medical students enjoy higher than average interview and admission rates at medical schools. We also have formed an alliance with the Texas Medical Center by becoming a member institution. This gives our students greater access to the resources available at some of the nation s leading hospitals. 3 Biology Biology, BA Biology, BS stthom.edu/biology This is the era of biology characterized by rapid and amazing advances in every aspect of this dynamic field. The vital and exciting life sciences curriculum at UST emphasizes the full range of studies from the biology of ecosystems and organisms to cells and molecules within an evolutionary context. The biology major is designed to prepare students for graduate and professional schools and for entry-level biologist positions. Cell and Molecular Biology Cell and Molecular Biology, BS stthom.edu/biology The cell and molecular biology program is specifically designed to prepare students for cellular, molecular or genetics-based graduate studies. Possible careers include research in DNA replications and repairs systems, cell reproduction and genomes, among other career options. Students will be trained to critically evaluate scientific data and perform sound experiments. Bioinformatics Bioinformatics, BS stthom.edu/bioinformatics Bioinformatics is a fast-growing and newly emerging field in the life sciences that uses mathematics and computer science applications to analyze and store information produced from the various genome, proteome and other omics projects. In a unique combination, the major comprises a concentration of courses in biology, chemistry, mathematics, computer science and physics. Bioinformatics graduates are prepared to enter professional or graduate programs in bioinformatics, as well as entry-level positions in biotechnology firms, genome projects or the pharmaceutical industry. Biochemistry Biochemistry, BS stthom.edu/chemistry Biochemistry focuses on addressing biological questions through the application of chemical principles and techniques. As a discipline, biochemistry reflects the chemical theories and approaches that are central to increasing our understanding of biological phenomena. Students will be exposed to the breadth of biochemistry through their courses and research experiences. Chemistry Chemistry, BA Chemistry, BS stthom.edu/chemistry As a process, chemistry is concerned with the tools and techniques of investigating matter, the interpretation of the results of these investigations and the application of models used to explain experimental outcomes. Studying chemistry requires thoughtfulness, imagination and precision. Exact measurements are required as predictions are tested. Our understanding of the atomic and molecular world may be modified based on the results of experiments.

Computer science is the study of hardware and software for computer systems and the development of various applications. Students will learn computer principles, computational theories, programming languages and skills, analysis of algorithms, databases, networking, web development, security and software project management. This knowledge gives students the tools required to solve real world problems, making them highly qualified for graduate school or employment. Cooperative Engineering BA in Applied Mathematics from UST and a BS in Engineering from one of the cooperative institutions stthom.edu/cooperativeengineering Cooperative Engineering is a 3/2 program in which students spend the first three years at UST taking mathematics, science and basic engineering courses along with the core liberal arts courses. After successfully completing the prerequisites at UST, students transfer to one of our partner schools to complete their degree. Visit our website for an updated list of university partners. Students may become involved in a project with the engineering faculty, or they may find an interesting project to do with faculty in a related branch of mathematics or science. Mathematics Mathematics, BA Applied Mathematics, BA stthom.edu/math Our curriculum provides a solid foundation for several mathematics-related careers. Our majors are encouraged to broaden their mathematical exposure by electing courses in applied fields such as biology, bioinformatics, chemistry, physics, economics and business. Our graduates are prepared to do graduate work in mathematics or in the many fields to which mathematics is becoming increasingly important. Beyond the fundamental requirements, advanced course sequences can be tailored to the needs and interests of individual students.

5 STEM Minors Environmental Science Environmental Studies stthom.edu/environmentalscience The program at UST is unique among environmental programs in the United States. While many universities offer programs that study the environment from the perspective of ecology or economics, UST is able to go a step further to explore environmental issues from a moral perspective in light of the Catholic intellectual tradition. Physics stthom.edu/physics Physics attempts to discover the fundamental laws of the universe, from sub-atomic quarks to distant black holes. Today, physics is applied to nanotechnology, medical diagnostics and rocket science. Many UST students pursue a physics minor, including research with our physics professors, to complement their STEM major and enhance their job opportunities. Pre-Health Programs stthom.edu/prehealth Preparation for a career in medicine, dentistry or another health profession field begins with a successful undergraduate education. At UST, students establish a strong foundation for entering specialized training in the health professions through our broad-based liberal arts and sciences education. UST offers opportunities in the following pre-health disciplines: Pre-Dental Pre-Medical Pre-Pharmacy Pre-Optometry Pre-Physical Therapy Pre-Physician Assistant Pre-Veterinary Medicine Post-Baccalaureate education Incoming first-year students will visit with an academic advisor regarding course requirements and recommendations. Ongoing advising in the second and third years helps students to stay on-track with coursework that defines their professional career path.

6 Center for Science and Health Professions The University of St. Thomas Center for Science and Health Professions provides new classrooms and labs for students of the biology and chemistry departments and the Carol and Odis Peavy School of Nursing. As funds are raised, additional wings will be added to accommodate the physics, math, environmental science, computer science and cooperative engineering departments. The Center will be a highly adaptive, personalized learning space for students pursuing health and science disciplines. It will help UST continue to produce leaders in these high-demand fields especially as related job opportunities continue to expand in the region. Texas Medical Center In 2015, UST became a member of the Texas Medical Center, the largest medical complex in the world, located just minutes away from the UST campus. This has increased our students access to internships and research opportunities with some of the best medical institutions in the world. These experiences give our students exposure to leaders in medicine, help our students become stronger candidates for graduate school and even advance their careers in life sciences. We also partnered with the Houston Methodist Research Institute to develop a graduate degree program. The Master in Clinical Translation Management is an innovative, one-year program where students learn how to guide research from concept to cure. 46% of entering freshmen have STEM/Health interests
