SMART Slutins: Implementatin Plan SMART Certified Trainer: Stacey Trampenau Date: June 1, 2017 Implementatin pint-f-view: Educatinal Cnsultant and Trainer/ Reseller develping a PD plan fr a schl district n the West Cast that is in the prcess f purchasing training fr their special educatin and K-5 th classrms wh will be purchasing SPNL-6275 IFPs. *This was written as a SMART Slutins: Implementatin Plan fr the Re-Certificatin prgram. Abstract: I am currently wrking with the district s Directr f Instructinal Technlgy in rder t create a prfessinal develpment plan t effectively supprt their IFP implementatin. My gal is t, ver the curse f the schl year, train their teachers n using SMART s Learning Suite with their 6275 s. I am an Educatinal Cnsultant and Trainer fr a reseller in their area. I. Analyze: Perfrm a Needs Assessment Overview: The Analysis phase is the fundatinal step t a successful implementatin plan. Frm yur analysis, yu will design learning gals which allw yu t develp the resurces necessary t mve yur team s knwledge, skills, and abilities t the next level f expertise with the SMART Learning Suite. System Organizatin: This is a small district that has five elementary schls and ne middle schl. The instructinal Technlgy Directr wh made the initial purchase f the SMART IFP s is in charge f apprving the PD plan, financing the trainings and scheduling the trainings. They have a TOSA wh will be attending a 3 day lng summer camp ffered by ur training prgram in rder t assist the teachers during the year. The teachers, wh are attending the wrkshps, will be required t demnstrate hw they are affectively using the sftware as well as their IFP s thrughut the schl year. Principals will be required t fund any cntent creatin sessins ut f their wn site budgets. Current State f the rganizatin: What is the current state f yur SMART Learning Suite Implementatin? The district has previusly used verhead prjectrs with dcument cameras. Each staff received a free Pwer and Ptential Presentatin in May f the 2016/2017 schl year. The gal f the Pwer and Ptential Wrkshp was t nt nly get teachers excited abut their new technlgy but t als enlighten them t the pssibilities f hw this technlgy will change their classrm. SMART Respnse was used t pll each site s staff at the end f the Pwer and Ptential Presentatin. I have fund that I receive a higher percent f participatin when I give questinnaires during the Pwer and Ptential. All teachers frm all sites will be starting as new users. Assumptins and Cnstraints f yur implementatin plan: SMART Glbal Prfessinal Learning 1 P a g e
SMART Slutins: Implementatin Plan After the Pwer and Ptential presentatin, the teachers at each site are extremely excited. The key t creating excitement is t demnstrate the capabilities f the SMART Learning Suite. It is imprtant t use material that they are currently using in the classrm. We wrked with the district t incrprate their Lexia Learning n-line prgram as well as their n-line Orig Math prgram and FOSS kits. We keep teachers mtivated by making each wrkshp hands-n and current. The pages and lessns that are created as practice can be used in the classrm the next day and are based n the prgrams used by the district. The main cnstraint frm the district is time. Nt all f the wrkshps fit int the weekly site meetings. A few wrkshps needed t be mved after schl and the teachers paid fr their time. Als, the cntent creatin sessins did nt fit int the schedule. Currently, the principals at each site are respnsible fr scheduling and funding their wn cntent creatin sessins which means that sme sites will receive mre wrk time than thers. The district s TOSA is being trained at ur 3 day SMART Summer Camp fr Teachers in July. She will be available t assist teachers n a daily basis and will be assessing the teachers as part f her assignment. Teachers leave each wrkshp with digital materials t help them succeed, including a hands-n SMART Ntebk review that they can use in their wn classrm n their wn IFP. It walks them thrugh the skills they learned in the wrkshp. We als refer them t SMART s YuTube Channel -SMART Classrm, Educatr2Educatr, the Exchange and SMART s n-line tutrials. The teachers are currently using PwerPint, Ggle Apps fr Educatin, an n-line math and language prgram, assessment websites such as Scrative, and respnse websites such as Padlet, s are nt new t using their cmputer fr instructin n a daily basis. They are extremely excited abut the fact that SMART Learning Suite can d it all, making it nt necessary t use s many different sites. SMART s Learning Suite will make a meaningful difference in different areas depending n the needs f the age grup. The Special Educatin teachers are extremely excited at the ease in which they can bring in images, as they deal with special nn-verbal cards. They als really like the pen ID and Object Awareness. I knw it is nt sftware, but the ease f use f SMART s hardware helped us win a 2 mnth trial in which the district was trying ther interactive bards. The upper grades have 1:1 Chrmebks s SMART Amp, SMART Respnse and the LAB will excite them. Acrss the bard it was amazing variety f instructinal, interactive pages that yu can make with just the basic tls in Ntebk like the ability t infinite clne, layer bjects and add a link t an bject that really wwed them. II. Design: Identifying Gals, and Objectives: Overview: Once the Needs Assessment is cmplete and there is an understanding f the rganizatin s current state, it is time t determine gals f the future desired state. The gals created during this step establish a learning gap; ur purpse is t create ne specific gal and three bjectives fr that gal t help achieve ur new desired state. Our bjectives are meaningful learning pprtunities t SMART Glbal Prfessinal Learning 2 P a g e
SMART Slutins: Implementatin Plan bridge that gap and achieve the gal which is the next level f implementatin using the SMART Learning Suite. Establish the Learning Gap: In ne year, I wuld like teachers at all sites t be fully trained n all the aspects f SMART Ntebk and age grups that have access t 1:1 devices trained n SMART Amp. It is a district gal that all teachers are using their IFP s daily and nt just t prject their dcument cameras. Each site will have a cmbinatin f teachers wh are cmfrtable using technlgy and thse teachers wh d nt use technlgy n a daily basis. Even thugh all teachers will be creating in cntent creatin classes, sme teachers will start develping lessns n their wn time whereas sme will just use material created by ther teachers r dwnladed frm the Exchange. It is understd that sme teachers will be using SMART Learning Suite mre simply than thers. Design Instructinal Gal: When designing specific gals think abut yur learning gap, think abut the fllwing items t guide yu twards yur gal: Cnsider what yur instructinal challenge is based frm yur abve analysis. The largest challenges we will face in reaching ur gal will be teacher s individual time, alltted staff training time, and teacher s individual technlgy skill/cmfrt. Cnsider why yur students are facing this challenge. Teachers are intrduced t new teaching methds, new technlgy new teaching strategies and new teaching materials all the time. They are extremely busy and verwrked. All instructin needs t be relative, exciting and t the pint. What yu wuld like t see happen by integrating SMART Learning Suite int the instructin. I wuld like t see teachers using SMART Learning Suite t make their daily lessn prep easier, mtivate students, increase student understanding, and increase student cllabratin. Design Objectives t achieve yur gal: Objectives help yu clse and/r bridge the learning gap that yu have identified. The gal is the desired state and the bjectives are the stepping stnes t reach the desired state. In relatin t yur gal, where are yur learner s current abilities? Cnsider where yur learners need t be at the end f the year. Yur bjectives fcus n hw the SMART Learning Suite can help yu clse this gap. Hw will yur bjectives allw yu t get t the desired state? Gal: The gal set by the district, in cllabratin with their SMART EC, is t have teachers fully trained n the SMART Learning suite by the end f the 2017/2018 schl year as well as use their IFP s n a daily basis using the tls they learn in each wrkshp with their SMART Certified Trainer. All teachers will be trained by a SMART Certified Trainer and bserved and supprted by the district TOSA. We wish t see teachers integrating their math, language and science curriculums as well as ffering pprtunities fr hands-n student participatin. SMART Glbal Prfessinal Learning 3 P a g e
SMART Slutins: Implementatin Plan Objectives fr gal ne: Wrk with the district t make sure that they are dedicating adequate PD time t SMART Learning Suite Sftware in rder t give teachers hands-n time during the wrkshps. Making sure that the district as well as the principals understand the value f giving teachers cntent creatin/lessn develpment time s they can cllabrate with their peers, develp lessns and embrace the sftware. Getting teachers excited with cntent that teachers can relate t and use in their classrms. Trainings shuld be custmized fr the specific grup f teachers. III. Develp: Cnstructing activities t achieve the gal Overview: This may be the step that we, as trainers, are used t: Develping the prcess in which ur learners will gain knwledge, and mre imprtantly, change their behavir because f their new skill. When develping this prcess fr adult learners, it is imprtant t cnsider the mst efficient path t make the mst impact. Depending upn the learning gap and factrs such as the level f ur learners, time factrs, r distance between ur learning grups, cnsider varius ptins in yur training and hw it wuld best suit yur rganizatin. Is it best t fcus n the whle grup at the same time, the varius levels f implementatin, r subject specific grups t wrk tgether t achieve this gal? We d smetimes break int tw grups and either use tw trainers r stager the training times. The grups can be either based n cmfrt with technlgy r knwledge f SMART Ntebk Sftware. Hwever, because this district is starting everyne as a new user we are nt breaking int grups. We ffer a SMART Summer Camp fr Teachers ever summer where principals can train their new teachers. Remember, implementatin takes mre than ne training sessin, and mst likely, mre than ne persn. Therefre: Hw will yu extend r scaffld the learning? SMART s sftware design is straight frward and easy t use and mst teachers that have experience with ther sftware find it very user friendly. Our cntent builds n teacher s experiences as they learn new skills within SMART s Learning Suite sftware. Wrkshps are designed s that even teachers wh d nt feel that they are tech-savvy find success. Each tl lends itself t differentiated learning and builds upn previus knwledge f that tl. Mst tls have simple ways that yu can use them and then mre cmplicated ways. We d nt teach ALL the ways yu can use any given tl in a specific wrkshp. Fr example, the table tl can be used just as a table. Teachers will get cmfrtable creating a table and dragging bjects int it. Hwever, adding t that skill, ne finds that they can be very creative with the table tl. Yu can use it t create a fractin sliding bar, create an interactive bar graph, create interactive cunting frames, and much mre. Can they learn at their wn pace? Yes, teachers receive digital materials including the training pages, hands-n pages file, example lessns and links t SMART s Yutube Channel- SMART SMART Glbal Prfessinal Learning 4 P a g e
SMART Slutins: Implementatin Plan Classrms, Educatr2Educatr and the Exchange. Als, we d remind ur attendees that they can find SMART s Tutrial under Help at any time. Can they learn and practice n-the-jb while teaching their wn students? Yes, during ur cntent creatin sessins as well as during each wrkshp, teachers create pages and full lessns that they can use in class. The best teachers understand that we are all lifelng learners. We hear frm many teachers that their students help them by truble shting during a lessn. Example: Mrs. Smith, yu need t push the muse buttn, yu are still a textbx. Hw can yu invlve yur learner s students? During ne f ur trainings the teachers create an example lessn that is a student run statin. The teacher will present that lessn at a cntent creatin sessin. We d fcus n student participatin, student centers, and hw t invlve students during whle class instructin during ur wrkshps, but during this first year f implementatin we are nt bringing students int any f the trainings r sending a trainer t any classrms as we have in sme districts. We d have a SMART Student Tech grup at ne f ur middle schls thrugh PLTW. Hw d yu invlve yur stakehlders? The District TOSA and Principal at each site will be attending the trainings. The TOSA will be visiting classrms t assist and assess teachers. The TOSA will be in cntact with the SMART Certified Trainer, althugh sme teachers d their trainer s directly fr advice. T maintain a technlgy-rich envirnment, the frequency f technlgy use must be cnsidered. Yur develpment task is t align yur learning bjectives abve with what type f activity yu will develp t fulfill that bjective. *The fllwing is a watered dwn view f ur wrkshps. We can t give ut the cntent f ur wrkshps n the Exchange. Learning activities t fulfill the bjective: Pwer and Ptential 45 min Presentatin (On-Site) This presentatin was created fr the district by a SMART Certified Trainer t give the staff an idea f what they culd expect t d with their new IFP s using SMART Learning Suite. It als was meant t generate excitement by using example pages that pertained t the learning bjectives set frth by the district. Learning activities t fulfill the bjective: Full day Beginning SMART Ntebk Training (n-site) using a Summer Prfessinal Develpment Day. This curse is designed fr teachers new t the SMART Learning Suite. Teachers learn basic white barding skills as well as hw t use their SMART IFP s in cllabratin with a variety f ther digital resurces they have in their classrms. The basic tabs and tls in SMART Ntebk are intrduced and practiced by the learners. All learners must have a laptp with SMART Learning Suite dwnladed nt it prir t attending the wrkshp. After each skill is intrduced a hands-n sectin will fllw as well as games, prjects, and assessments that test the mastery f the cncept. In rder t keep teachers mtivated, all skills include specific real wrld examples in which t use each cncept/skill in the classrm. Teachers will be shwn hw t find lessns n the SMART Exchange, subscribe t SMART Classrms and Educatr2Educatr n YuTube, Prfessinal Develpment n SMART s website as well as the n-line self-paced tutrial. SMART Glbal Prfessinal Learning 5 P a g e
SMART Slutins: Implementatin Plan Teacher will received digital material that relates t the wrkshp. (Self-paced tutrial they can use n their wn IFP, cpy f the wrkshp pages including templates that can help them build sme basic pages, and tw flders with examples lessns they can either use if they pertain t them r dissect) Learning activities t fulfill the bjective: Cntent Creatin Sessin (Beginning) (2 hurs On- Site Training) Teachers will wrk with their grade level team t create a lessn using beginning skills. Templates and ideas will be included in the handuts and a SMART Certified Trainer as well as the District TOSA will be n hand fr any teams that need help. Learning activities t fulfill the bjective: Intermediate 1 SMART Ntebk Training (2 hurs) (On-Site) Intermediate Wrkshps begin with a test, game, r review t assess the skills f the staff and warm them up fr the sessin. Page examples that the teachers need t recreate, Ntebk Respnse assessments, LAB games r assessment games (nt using Respnse) created in Ntebk are sme examples. Teachers will learn abut sme f the intermediate tls in Ntebk Sftware. Object animatin, alignment and tables are a few f the skills that will be taught as well as page design. After each skill is intrduced a hands-n sectin will fllw as well as games, prjects, and assessments that test the mastery f the cncept. In rder t keep teachers mtivated, all skills include specific real wrld examples that use each cncept r skill in the classrm. Learning activities t fulfill the bjective: Cntent Creatin Sessin (Intermediate 1) (2 hurs- On-Site) Teachers will wrk with their grade level team t create a lessn r set f lessns using intermediate as well as beginning skills. In rder t keep teachers mtivated, all skills include specific real wrld examples that use each cncept r skill in the classrm. Additinal Prfessinal Develpment Opprtunities: We ffer a SMART Summer Camp fr Teachers ever year during the summer. It is a 3 day camp that lets schls training their new teachers r teachers that need t review withut having t purchase n-site training. We ffer n-ging, n-site Lessn Develpment Wrkshps that are a fractin f the price f Instructinal Wrkshps t keep schls/districts that have already invested in ur training prgram up t date and cnsciusly creating using SMART Learning Suite. This als benefits ur training prgram. By keeping in tuch with advanced users we gain wnderful ideas that we can share with thers. IV. Implement: Putting yur plan int actin Overview: It is time fr actin within the implementatin plan. During the actual implementatin, dn t expect everything t g as yu have planned. As trainers we all have the abilities t execute this implementatin plan and assign peple their tasks and deliver training sessins. In this sectin, we will fcus n being flexible. If the prcess starts t g ff track this des nt mean that we shuld just stay the curse. Time is precius and we want t ensure psitive results fr this implementatin. Slight adjustments during implementatin ensure that we dn t abandn the plan all tgether. SMART Glbal Prfessinal Learning 7 P a g e
SMART Slutins: Implementatin Plan Hw will yu ensure that yur plan will wrk? Assessments are built int the implementatin. Starting after the first beginning training, it is natural fr learners t start pulling away frm each ther based n their ability level and their interest t self-teach and practice. It is imprtant t keep all types f learners excited, mtivated and feeling cnfident. We stress that SMART s Learning Suite is s user friendly that all teachers can find success creating interactive lessns fr their students. We strive t make sure that each f ur sessins have enugh ideas t benefit teachers wh have gne ahead and have mastered the sftware as well as fr teachers wh are mre tentative abut using technlgy. That being said, we will spend a lnger time reviewing infrmatin instead f mving frward if we feel, based n the initial assessment, that the grup as a whle is nt ready fr the material being presented. It is mre imprtant fr teachers t master enugh f the sftware t effectively teach than t lecture them with s much infrmatin that they retain nne f it. Teachers receive digital material frm each sessin that they can use t review and practice in their wn classrm. We find that Cntent Creatin Sessins nt nly mtivate teachers t create their wn wrk but ffer them the time t cllabrate with c-wrkers t share the lad f cntent creatin. Having a SMART Certified Trainer n hand when creating cntent lets them have instantaneus answers t questins that might hinder their creatin prcess. The last 30 minutes f each cntent creatin sessin is als extremely imprtant t mtivating teachers t either create their wn lessns r have dwnladed lessns that they have mdified t share. N ne wants t be the grup with nthing t share. Lastly, we find it extremely imprtant t have teachers creating pages that they will actually use in their classrm fr the hands-n part f learning each skill. We make sure that there is material fr each grade level in ur examples as well as material frm the n-line prgrams they have adpted district wide, such as Orig. V. Evaluate: Measure the impact made n yur gals Overview: This step in the implementatin prcess may seem like a final r summative assessment f hw the implementatin was carried ut, but we als need t think abut evaluatin in every step f this mdel. Cntinuusly mnitr and evaluate s yu can be ready t adjust the timetable r rescue the plan frm an earlier miscalculatin. This plan is intended t encmpass ne year, and the evaluatin stage is time fr reflectin and a time t begin cnsidering the Analyze Step again. Sme questins that yu may want t think abut during the evaluatin stage are: Did yu accmplish yur gal? What wrked? What didn t wrk? Wh was mst successful with their implementatin f the SMART Learning Suite and why? When d we start again? SMART Glbal Prfessinal Learning 8 P a g e
SMART Slutins: Implementatin Plan Evaluate yur plan: The Cnclusin This plan has been used with many ther schl districts and private schls. It is tried and tested and has been mdified ver the years and will cntinue t be mdified t ensure the highest percentage f teachers actually using their SMART prducts as mre than just glrified prjectrs. This is the plan that we recmmend highly t all ur custmers and receives psitive reviews frm the teachers attending as well as the stakehlders. The tw issues that affect the adptin f this plan are time and mney. This district has invested fully in the training prgram, but sme districts r private schls d nt have the time r mney t fully train their staff r ffer as many cntent creatin sessins. We find that the mre custmers push fr trainings that cndense the cntent and ffer less hands-n time/ less wrk time the mre prblems we face with teachers nt using their bards r IFP s. They might get all the infrmatin int their staff, but cme away with teachers retaining less and thus using the sftware less. SMART Glbal Prfessinal Learning 9 P a g e
