2 PROGRAM INFORMATION District 95 will be offering two sessions of semester credit to grades All summer school classes will take place at Lake Zurich High School. The Lake Zurich High School Summer School Program is selfsupporting. Therefore, we reserve the right to cancel any class that does not meet minimum enrollment guidelines. SUMMER SCHOOL REGISTRATION WILL BEGIN ON MARCH 1, 2017 The dates for Summer School are: Session I: Monday, June 19 Friday, July 7, 2017* Session II: Monday, July 10 Thursday, July 27, 2017 Summer school classes will be held Monday-Thursday from 7:30 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. The only exceptions are Driver s Education Classroom and Study Skills. (7:30 a.m. 10:30 a.m.). *Due to the July 4 holiday, the last week of Session I will run Monday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. ELIGIBILITY The program is open to all district high school students and incoming freshman. Out-of-district students should check with their respective schools to see if credits are transferable. Eligibility for the Driver s Education Class and Behind-The-Wheel instruction is set by Illinois State law, which is defined in the Driver s Education section of this brochure. TUITION The tuition fees for summer school are as follows: $185 per semester course for in-district students $260 per semester course for out-of-district students $100 for Study Skills $400 for Driver s Education Classroom and Behind the Wheel* Please pay online or make checks payable to Lake Zurich CUSD95. Some courses may require additional costs for supplies. Due to the summer school program being self-supporting, scholarships are not available. However, if you need to set up a payment plan, please contact the Summer School office. Effective, June 1, 2017, there will be no refunds, unless a course is cancelled. Prior to that date, a written request for a refund should be submitted to the District 95 Summer School Office, 400 S. Old Rand Road, Lake Zurich, Illinois A $25 cancellation fee will be deducted from your refund. TRANSPORTATION Transportation is not provided for the high school summer school program. EVALUATION Students who are taking courses for credit will receive the same type of grades as given during the regular school year. Grades received for semester courses will be counted toward graduation. Final exams will be given in all classes at the end of each session.
3 ATTENDANCE Students should not elect to participate in the summer school program if family vacations, summer camps or other activities have been scheduled. One day in summer school equals five days in the regular school year. Because curriculum is condensed and coursework is concentrated, summer school requires prompt student attendance. 1. A student will be dropped from summer school on his/her third day of absence, excused or unexcused, from any class. 2. A tardy of one half hour or less is recorded as one-half day absence; more than one half hour equals a full day. 3. Attendance on the last day of summer school is mandatory. A student who is absent on the last day of summer school may not take the final examination, will not receive credit, and will forfeit all fees for the semester. 4. Students dropped from summer school do not receive refunds. 5. To report an absence or ask a question, please call the summer school office at REFUNDS AND COURSE CANCELLATIONS The Lake Zurich High School Summer School Program is self-supporting. REGISTRATION All classes are on a first-come, first-serve basis, which is determined by the date of registration. No phone registrations will be accepted. PAYMENT Payment should be made online at the time of registration. If payment has not been received, you are not guaranteed a spot in the course.
4 COURSES FOR CREDIT Register for summer school online. APPLIED ARTS Consumer Education - College Prep Graduation Requirement Semester Course Session I or Session II The objective of this course is to give the student a sound understanding of the marketplace and how to function in it as a wise and thoughtful consumer. Students will learn the free enterprise system, advertising, management of the buying process in the marketplace, dealing with sales people, money management, consumer rights, insurance, credit, banks and managing you own checking account. This semester course is a graduation requirement. ART Art Survey College Prep Semester Course Session I or II Art Survey is a course that gives you an introduction to 2-D (drawing and painting), 3-D (sculpture and ceramics), Digital Media and Photography, and Art History with a focus on developing the skills and techniques that you will need for your future in Art. Art Survey is an optional course outside of the three main tracks that provides students an opportunity to explore new media and increase their knowledge of the key skills and concepts. ENGLISH (Depending upon enrollment, the English classes may be canceled or combined.) Creative Writing College Prep - Semester Course Session I *Students must have completed their freshman year to enroll. Creative Writing is a semester course for the imaginative and creative writer. Required student writings will take the form of poems, short stories, non-fiction, and plays. Classroom discussions will focus on the evaluation of published writings of professional authors, an examination of the use of literacy devices in writing, and workshops that examine and critique the writing of classroom participants. English I, II, or III College Prep 1 st Semester - Session I; 2 nd Semester Session II This course is designed to make up.5 credit in English. The course will be differentiated for each student s level and will focus on the study of literature, grammar, composition, vocabulary, and communication. The course will include the completion of a formal research paper. Journalism 1 College Prep - Semester Course Session I Journalism 1 (J-I) is a course in written and oral communication designed to build strong writing, editing, and speaking skills for students of all age and ability levels. Students survey aspects of print journalism to understand media s role in society, from legal and ethical issues to newswriting and modular design. Students work collaboratively in partner and group projects. This course is an English elective and does not count towards the English graduation requirement.
5 MATHEMATICS (Depending upon enrollment, the math classes may be canceled or combined.) Algebra I College Prep 1 st Semester - Session I; 2 nd Semester - Session II This course is designed to make up credit needed in math. The course grade will be based solely on grades earned on unit exams/assessments. Attendance on a daily basis is optional; however, attendance for each assessment is mandatory. It is to the student s benefit to attend class every day and receive the instruction provided. The curriculum used is the same as the normal school year, in a condensed time frame. Geometry College Prep 1 st Semester Session I; 2 nd Semester Session II This course is designed to make up credit needed in math. The course grade will be based solely on grades earned on unit exams/assessments. Attendance on a daily basis is optional; however, attendance for each assessment is mandatory. It is to the student s benefit to attend class every day and receive the instruction provided. The curriculum used is the same as the normal school year, in a condensed time frame. Transition to Algebra I CP Session II only (this is a non-credit, enrichment course that will allow students to opt out of Algebra I Support, based on teacher recommendation.) This course runs from 7:30 am. to 10:30 a.m. This is an intervention course designed for the student who has struggled with mathematics and needs additional support to build a solid foundation for future mathematics courses. Grades are pass/fail only. This course does not count towards the Math graduation requirement. PHYSICAL EDUCATION Drivers Education Classroom & Behind the Wheel The classroom portion will meet during Session I (June 13 June 30) from 7:30 a.m. 10:30 a.m. Graduation requirement Behind the Wheel driving dates will be scheduled with the instructor and may be during either the Session I or Session II dates. The instructor will contact those students that qualify to take the summer school course to arrange dates for driving. Students taking the classroom portion of Drivers Education must also meet the state requirement of six-clock hours behind the wheel and three hours of observation, over the summer. Therefore, enrollment will be limited to 20 students. Enrollment priority will be given to LZHS students and will be determined by birth date. The Driver s Ed. Classroom and Behind the Wheel fees total $ Students must be 15 by the first day of summer school class. Drivers Education consists of thirty classroom hours of safe driving theory. Drivers Education information is continued on the next page. Illinois School Code, 105 ILCS 5/27-23, states: 1. All students are required to attend 30 clock hours of Driver s Education classroom. If a student, for any reason, fails to meet this attendance requirement they will be dropped from the class. 2. All students must have received a passing grade in eight courses during the two semesters prior to enrolling in driver education. Behind the Wheel is only available to those students who are concurrently taking Driver s Education classroom and are students in the Lake Zurich School District. A State of Illinois learner s permit is required. Students must be at least 15 years of age to enroll in the course. Students will be instructed in vehicle safety and in their ability to identify, predict, decide and properly react to various driving situations.
6 Health College Prep Graduation Requirement Session I This course will give students practical knowledge that will help keep them physically fit and mentally healthy throughout their lives. The course content is designed to meet the needs of today s students as they strive to live higher quality lives. SCIENCE Astronomy College Prep Semester Course Session I only Some night observations may be held, weather permitting. Astronomy is an introductory course that covers the constellations, planets, stellar evolution, galaxies, our sun, the moon, life in the universe, UFO s, and cosmology. This course is recommended for those students who desire to learn some fundamental concepts of physics in a course that does not require the advanced math skill of the physics course. Biology I Honors 1 st Semester Session I; 2 nd Semester Session II Biology I is the study of living things and the life processes that are common to both plants and animals. The course covers topics from one-celled organisms through the most complex organisms focusing on their structures and related functions. Their classification, economic importance, and adaptations are studied. Laboratory units are taught from living materials or preserved specimens. Supplementary aids such as models, charts, and books are used to increase understanding of the subject material. This course integrates the basic principles of Biology I. Physical Science Honors 1 st Semester Session I; 2 nd Semester Session II Prerequisites: Biology CP (or higher) grade of A and Algebra I Honors grade of B or Algebra I CP grade of A This course covers topics of Physical Science, including chemistry, physics, and earth science. Physical Science is a skill-based course that uses scientific inquiry and laboratory investigations to teach the skills necessary for success in science. This course emphasizes science literacy through applied math as well as applied writing and research skills used in science. This is an intense course designed for highly motivated students with accelerated math, science, and reading skills. SOCIAL STUDIES Government College Prep Graduation Requirement Semester Course Session I or Session II *Students must have completed their junior year in high school to enroll. U.S. Government is a one semester required course that examines the principles of our representative democracy by studying and being tested on the Declaration of Independence, the U.S. Constitution, the history and geography of Illinois, the Illinois Constitution, the flag of the U.S. and patriotism. This course also attempts to effectively prepare students for civic responsibility. WORLD LANGUAGES FRENCH I - 1 st Semester Session I; 2 nd Semester Session II French I offers a study in the fundamental aspects of French including basic vocabulary, verb conjugation (in the present, past, and future tenses), use of adjectives, subject and object pronouns, and use of prepositions. These concepts are taught using listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Emphasis is placed on listening and speaking. FRENCH II HONORS - 1 st Semester Session I; 2 nd Semester Session II PREREQUISITES: FRENCH I French II Honors classes cover the same material as W746; however, more emphasis is placed on additional outside projects. Honor students need to be highly motivated and demonstrate skills at a higher level of proficiency.
7 GERMAN I - 1 st Semester Session I; 2 nd Semester Session II German I develops basic speaking, reading, writing, grammar, function, and the structure of the German language. Students practice listening and speaking through dialogues in the student text and through the use of other oral and visual materials. Students learn about the German way of life and study the differences and similarities of people in Germany, Austria, and Switzerland. GERMAN II - HONORS - 1 st Semester Session I; 2 nd Semester Session II PREREQUISITES: GERMAN I RECOMMENDATION OF INSTRUCTOR REQUIRED TO ENROLL. German II Honors classes cover the same material as the W726 class; however, more emphasis is placed on additional outside projects. Honor students need to be highly motivated and demonstrate skills at a higher level of proficiency. SPANISH I - 1 st Semester Session I; 2 nd Semester Session II Spanish I offers a study in vocabulary acquisition, comprehension, pronunciation, and basic grammatical structures such as nouns, pronouns, verbs and their conjugations, adjectives and adverbs. Activities such as repetition, paired practice, peer teaching, and listening exercises are used. SPANISH II - HONORS - 1 st Semester Session I; 2 nd Semester Session II PREREQUISITES: SPANISH I RECOMMENDATION OF INSTRUCTOR REQUIRED TO ENROLL. Spanish II Honors classes cover the same material as the W707 class; however, more emphasis is placed on additional outside projects. Honor students need to be highly motivated and demonstrate skills at a higher level of proficiency. ENRICHMENT, NON-CREDIT COURSES The following non-credit course will meet for one week. This one-week course costs $100. Study Skills (June 19 22) This one-week course will provide any student with the opportunity to review, refine and build the skills necessary to succeed in high school. Instruction will occur in the areas of time management, listening, note taking, test taking, reading for comprehension, communication skills, goal setting and building selfesteem.
