1 Course Outline for Honors Spanish II Mrs. Sharon Koller Overview: Spanish 2 is designed to prepare students to function at beginning levels of proficiency in a variety of authentic situations. Emphasis will be placed on communicating in the target language, building cultural awareness, making interdisciplinary connections, drawing comparisons between languages and cultures and learning to use the target language within our school community and the broader regional and global communities. Textbooks and Other Resources: Aventura Textbook and Workbook EMCLanguages.net On-line resource for additional practice Objectives 1. Students will refine their usage and understanding of the sound system of the language. 2. Students will expand their appreciation and insight of a culture other than their own. 3. Students will extend their vocabulary. 4. Students will explore more complex grammatical structures. 5. Students will be encouraged to speak in Spanish. Four Language Skills 1. Listening skills are practiced in class on a daily basis. We use CDs, videos, and oral exercises to accomplish this task. 2. Speaking Spanish plays an integral part at this level. Students are encouraged to use the target language to carry out all normal classroom functions. A variety of techniques are employed to encourage the student to express himself in Spanish. To accomplish this, students will participate in oral discussions, dialogues, speeches, and general conversation. 3. Reading is introduced on day one in the form of chapter dialogues and culture readings. Each of these contains the vocabulary and grammatical structures that will be taught in each lesson. Beginning with the fourth chapter of the level one book, all directions are written in Spanish to increase the student s comprehension. 4. Writing in the target language is encouraged from the first week of school year. Each writing assignment is based on the objectives of each lesson, and will increase in difficulty as more complex grammatical structures are mastered.

2 Grading Policy: Quarter grades are calculated using a point system. Tests, quizzes, oral work, and written work are used to determine a quarter grades. Students generally have quizzes per quarter and about 2-3 tests. Students have homework assignments on daily basis. Each homework assignment may or may not be included in the quarter grade. Homework Policy: 1. Homework will be checked at the beginning of each class period. 2. Most assignments will be worth 5 points based on completion, not necessarily accuracy. (Collected assignments will carry a higher value.) 3. NO homework assignments will be accepted late, except due to absence. a. Students are responsible for picking up and turning in all missed work. Enrichment and Extra Credit: 1. Please do not ask for any other extra credit opportunities. If you are completing your work, you will not need any extra credit. 2. I will provide additional enrichment activities as needed. Please feel free to ask if there is something special you would like to learn. Classroom Phone Number: Address: skoller@schuylkillvalley.org Please or call me with any questions or concerns throughout the year.
