Purpose The primary purpose of Latin I is to familiarize students with the building blocks of Latin and to teach them the mechanics of the language. First-year Latin requires great attention to detail, and faithful study and review. The secondary purpose of Latin I is to acquaint students with ancient Roman culture in order to gain understanding and appreciation of both the culture, the individuals who through their writing shaped ancient Roman thought, and the era in which the incarnation of Jesus took place and in which the early church was established. II. Class Procedures, Projects, and Activities Latin I covers the first sixteen chapters of Wheelock s Latin textbook (7 th edition), ranging in topic from the present tense to third declension nouns and adjectives. Classwork includes lecture, in-class exercises and translation, a project on Roman and early Christian historical events and texts, and quizzes/exams. In addition to a concentration on grammar, translation, and culture, the class will also examine various selections from the Vulgate, several creeds, and aspects of church liturgy. John F. Collins A Primer of Ecclesiastical Latin will be used as supplementary text; students will receive handouts from these texts as needed. III. Class Attendance Due to the interactive and cumulative nature of the course, regular attendance and active participation are mandatory. Excused absences, unexcused absences, and the maximum number of allowable absences in a semester are defined by Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary. IV. Class Assignments 2 Exams (20% x 2) = 40% Quizzes = 25% Project = 20% Class Participation (includes completion of homework) = 15% V. Late Assignments Students will be allowed to turn in work late for full credit for excused absences only. Alternate assignments may be given, if applicable. Regarding family and medical emergencies, it is the student s responsibility to notify me as soon as possible that he or she will need accommodations. Daily homework assignments completed late due to an

2 unexcused absence will not receive credit. Larger assignments completed late due to an unexcused absence will result in the assignment s grade being penalized. VI. Grading Scale A A B B B C C C D D D F 69 and below VII. Class Conduct 1. Students should exhibit a Christ-like attitude and demeanor at all times. 2. Students should treat one another and the instructor with respect and deference. 3. Computers, cell phones, and other electronic devices may only been used for taking notes or other class-related activities. Surfing the internet, texting, tweeting, etc. are not permitted. Students who abuse this policy will not be allowed to bring such devices to class. VIII.
