2 \ ORTYGIA 2 SCHOOL Ortygia Business School is a new Institution offering business education in the form of executive courses and high-level meetings between managers, academics and policy makers. Our guest lecturers and speakers are academics from the best universities in the world as well as senior business people and policymakers who have extensive business and policy experience. Our location reflects the school s mission: to build management capabilities which will foster economic development and growth in the countries of the Mediterranean, but our courses and events will also be of interest to a broader audience. The School intends to provide the skills and knowledge to help future business leaders succeed in turbulent institutional conditions, while bringing a global perspective, a broader knowledge of the world economy, and best practices from international businesses.

3 BUSINESS SCHOOL \ 3 THE 2017 LEADERSHIP PROGRAM The program is an open enrollment course designed for managers with proven leadership potential. A maximum of 20 people will be selected to participate in the class, taking ethnic and cultural diversity into consideration. The course is organized around the three pillars of business education: corporate strategy, leadership, and economics. The purpose is to analyse the challenges that managers face at different levels: the company (module 1), the individual (module 2), and the macroeconomy (module 3). Each module will consist of a 9 hour, two day course to be held over a weekend. The format will be lectures, case study discussions and simulations. Each module will benefit from external speakers including CEOs of global companies, entrepreneurs and global thinkers.

4 \ ORTYGIA 4 WHY THE ORTYGIA LEADERSHIP PROGRAMME I S DIFFERENT The content specifically targeted to offer a rapid immersion in the most challenging managerial issues of the day, and current thinking about these issues from leading experts. The quality of our guest lecturers and external speakers, including representatives from the most prestigious international business schools, the corporate world and public policy intellectuals. The network of participants, carefully selected to represent a wide range of background and experiences, to build precious business connections and opportunities in a community of future leaders. The format of 3 weekends in 3 months, giving busy attendees the opportunity of full participation in an inspiring and diverse atmosphere, to develop new ideas and frontier thinking. In addition, we offer the opportunity to exploit the beauty of Sicily s sea, landscape and history.

6 \ ORTYGIA 6 THE CLASS Mid to senior career professionals with around 10 years of experience who hold leadership position or will fill such a role in the near future to be selected from a variety of backgrounds. The quality and heterogeneity of the class will be a key asset of the course. We are looking for: Individuals from different regions/ countries and sectors; Individuals who are open to being challenged and ready to contribute and take advantage of new opportunities. Ambitious, motivated people with solid records of achievement; The composition of the class is designed in order to provide an opportunity for high quality interaction, exchange of ideas and experiences, and networking.

Guest lecturers from Harvard Business School, Kellogg School of Management and London Business School will run and coordinate the classes in each weekend. He has previously held posts at Harvard University, London School of Economics and Oxford University. He is coauthor of The 100-Year Life - Living and working in an age of longevity, shortlisted for the FT/McKinsey Business Book of the Year Award. Uniquely drawing on the authors expertise in economics, psychology and sociology, Gratton and Scott offer a broad-ranging analysis and a raft of solutions covering what to do with your finances, your education, your career and your relationships to succeed in creating a fulfilling 100-year life. 10 \ ORTYGIA 10 ONTENTS Corporate Strategy (MODULE 1) Raffaella Sadun, Harvard Business School This module covers the basic elements of business unit and corporate level strategy, including industry analysis, positioning, and competitive interaction. Central strategic challenges facing senior managers and CEOs will be addressed by introducing a framework for making decisions in a multi-business context in various arenas - from corporate change to business diversification. The framework is built around the idea that strategy is about integrated choices within a firm (internal consistency), choices to position the firm in its industry (external consistency), and choices managing strategic interactions with other industry players over time (dynamic consistency). Students will explore these topics through a mix of case study discussions and lectures. Leadership and Crisis Management (MODULE 2) NICOLA PERSICO Kellogg School of Management This module focuses on crisis management emerging from aggressive legal action, media coverage and social pressure on issues such as environmental protection, global labor standards, animal rights, privacy and security in e-commerce, corporate scandals and executive pay. These threats are particularly important because they do not arise from the usual, contract-based

11 BUSINESS SCHOOL \ 11 interactions that characterize normal business interactions. Through a rich set of case studies and crisis simulation exercises, the students will learn how to respond to such threats and turn them into opportunities for their companies. The students will improve their strategic thinking as well as team management and communication skills in high-stress situations and will learn how to integrate crisis management into they overall business strategy. Economic Growth, Business and Institutions (MODULE 3) Elias Papaioannou Lucrezia Reichlin London Business School This module offers a comprehensive macro perspective on economic growth across the world with a special focus on the Mediterranean region. It explores the relevance of institutions (corruption, legal enforcement, property rights) and cultural traits (family ties, trust, and religion) for economic growth and business opportunities. The class will also discuss current changes in the world economy.

12 \ ORTYGIA 12 FORMAT rief The course develops in three weekends over the months of April and June Students are required to arrive in Syracuse on Thursday. In the evening, there will be a short briefing by the organizers and Q&As. Classes will start on Friday at 9.30 and will end on Saturday at 12.30, for a total of 9 hours in two days. On Friday evening, there will be an informal meeting between students, the lecturer and the invited speakers. This will include drinks, dinner and a speech. All the course material will be available online in a dedicated page of the website of the school, accessible only to enrolled students. certificate At the end of the three modules, participants will be awarded Ortygia Business School certificates for successfully completing the course. Students have the option to stay in Ortigia until Sunday evening. Tours of Syracuse and of the local region will be organized by the school and available to those who choose to stay. Ortygia meeting

13 BUSINESS SCHOOL \ 13 LOCATION The course venue is Ortygia Business School, which occupies Palazzo Ardizzone, one of the beautiful historical buildings in the heart of Ortigia. The campus is furnished with up-to date teaching and learning facilities. Ortigia is the historical centre of the city of Siracuse, Sicily. Once the centre of Greek civilization in the eastern Mediterranean, Syracuse is a UNESCO world heritage site and Ortigia is the jewel in its crown.
