3 LX00AD Asia-Pacific as a Business Area (5 cr) Rationale The course is designed to introduce the complex diversity of the Asia-Pacific Region as a business area and the dynamics of businesses in 21 Asia-Pacific countries and in 4 regions. The course will concentrate on the business opportunities and challenges in the fastest growing business area in the world; a special focus is given for the performance of Asia-Pacific countries in global economy. The course particularly focuses on historical backgrounds, economic performances, governance frames, business cultures and practices, and for social structures in preparing companies to organize their businesses in the Asia-Pacific Region. Aims Understanding business dynamics together with cultural values equips the participants with a necessary marketing and management knowledge as well as analytical skills for the effective strategic marketing in the Asia-Pacific Region. A greater insight will be given into the administrative modes, business negotiation styles and other cultural aspects to build an important framework whilst starting businesses in the Asia-Pacific Region. Teaching and Learning Strategies The course will be arranged as an intensive weekend course (24 lecture hours). 8 LX00AD Asia-Pacific as a Business Area (5 cr) PROJECT WORK TOPICS The participants of this course will prepare a written report on one of the Asia-Pacific countries on 3 of the 4 issues mentioned below. The size of the project work group is 3-4 students. The written report is required in order to pass the course. The report accounts for 50 % of the final grade. The exam, held on lectures, lecture materials and literature, accounts for another 50 %. Working groups will be formed and topics will be given on Friday, September 19, The reports must be completed by Thursday, October 16 at All the reports must be sent together (as one set) for my address: jukka@avaintulos.fi. Some specified parts of the reports will be presented on Saturday Report topics are as follows: 1. General overview over the country's history and historical events that play a major role in its economic development. 2. What are the reasons or factors that have affected positively or negatively to the economic development of the country? In your report, make use of the SWOT-analysis, too. 3. The main characteristics of business cultures, inclusive the following topics: Business manners and business negotiation styles Main religions and how they should be taken into account as doing business in the country. 4. 10 LX00AD Business in China (5 cr) Rationale The course introduces the students to social, cultural, political and economic diversity of 'Greater China Region (People s Republic of China, Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR and Taiwan Province) as a business area. The course provides the participants an overview of the emerging patterns and modes of trade and investment. The main purpose of the course is to illustrate the reasons, forms, speed and various consequences of China's economic growth since The countries and regions in focus are: People s Republic of China, Hong Kong SAR, Macau SAR, Taiwan Province, Japan, Mongolia, South Korea and North Korea. Aims Understanding the history and development of Greater China Region and China s socio-economic, cultural and political environment. One aim of the course is to get the students acquainted with the characteristics of China s economic development as well as China s performance in global economy. A greater insight will be given into the business models and modes of Greater China Region and especially into the opportunities for Finnish and European companies in China Business. The size of the project work group is 3-4 students (topics 2 and 3). The written reports are required in order to pass the course. The reports account for 100 % of the final grade. Some specified parts of the reports will be presented on Saturday Report topics are as follows: 1. Write an Individual Essay on business or business cultures in China, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, Japan or South Korea. Give a detailed argumentation for Your descriptions. Weight of the exercise 1: 50 % of the grade (max 10 pages) 2. a Write an analytical description on the main contents of the textbook, chosen by Your group. 2.b What is the main message of the textbook examined by You to Finnish or European businessmen and -women? Weight of the exercise 2.a 2.b: 30 % of the grade (max 8 pages) 3. Write a report on the discussions with a business executive or expert from his or her own experiences in China-businesses. You are free to choose a Finnish or a foreign expert. It is up to You, too, to decide what questions You ask from the person You interviewed. 17 LX00AD Human and Environmental Challenges of Asia-Pacific (5 cr) Rationale The objective of the course is to get the students acquainted with the costs and problems risen after the long era of economic growth in the region. Accordingly, the emphasis is in the opportunities of foreign companies, public institutions, citizens and NGOs to solve the huge human, social and environmental problems of local people, villages, cities and national economies. Aims Understanding the human, social, economic and environmental problems and threats connected to organizing and producing welfare services in the Asia-Pacific Region. One aim of the course is to get the students acquainted with the challenges related to forests, agriculture and food production, position of women, child labor, pollution of waters, air and land as well as urbanization, Mega-Cities, infrastructure and recent applications of sustainable development policy in some Asia-Pacific countries. A greater insight will be given into some selected Case Studies and Exercises as well as for selected Welfare Indicators (HDI, QOL, SWL ). 22 LX00AD Human and Environmental Challenges of Asia-Pacific (5 cr) PROJECT WORK TOPICS (to be finalized in a working group of 3-4 students) Prepare two (2) written Project Work Reports by Thursday at Project Work Groups will be defined on Friday during the lectures by Mr.. The students should give the names of the participants in their working group, addresses and student numbers for the Course Director, latest on Friday Topic 1: Write an analytical report on one of the mega-size environmental or social challenges in the Asia-Pacific Region. You can focus Your report for a certain country or a city or even a smaller administrative unit. You are also free to focus Your report for a greater sub-region like South Asia, South-East Asia or East Asia. The students propose the topic for the Course Director who accepts the plan suggested by the students. Here are some examples on the topics: Overpopulation, Women's position in Asia, Child labor, Energy problems, Forest industry in Asia, De-forestation, Agriculture, Food safety, Fishing, Sea-waters pollution, Climate change in Asia, Avian Flu, Three Gorges Dam, Palm Oil Industry... You are free to suggest other topics, too. The topics mentioned before were just hints to help You to define Your final topic and its scope. (share of the grade 50 %, length max 15 pages)

Remember that Your argumentation is crucial in my evaluation. (share of the grade 50 %, length pages) In both of the reports: make analysis, give argumentation for what You present and use references in Your reports. Typically these kind of project works should have cover sheet, table of contents, references (quotation marks), reference list, page numbering as well as the names and student numbers of the participants. The objective of the course is to classify various types of sourcing, to suggest different suitable sourcing choices and to examine the paths leading to an effective sourcing channels from China and other Asia-Pacific countries. Maximum length of the report is totally pages (including both topics). Sending of the reports in a given schedule is required in order to pass the course. All the reports must be completed by Thursday, April 9, 2015 at Send the whole set of Your reports to my address: jukka@avaintulos.fi. Report topics are as follows: A. Project Work (70 %) You are planning to buy raw materials and components for Your end products from China. Your factory is locating in Europe (define the location). Your end products will be exported to European Union markets. Anyhow, around 30 % of those products are targeted for Chinese markets. Give a short overall description on the product You manufacture. Instead of China You are free to choose India. 1. How do You stress different supplier selection criterias in choosing and evaluating Your final sourcing candidates? Give a short argumentation for each of the criterias You stress in Your choice. 2.
