1 HPISD FLES Curriculum First Grade UNIT NAME ESTIMATED DURATION 9 WEEK PERIOD UNIT 5: LA FAMILIA Y LAS MASCOTAS (AP Theme: Families and Communities: Family Structure) 4 WEEKS Unit Overview In this unit students review basic language skills and vocabulary needed to name and introduce their immediate family members. They learn about Mexican family traditions and celebrations. They ask and respond to questions about how many people are in their family, including pets. Students practice using previously learned vocabulary to describe pets and farm animals. They use action words to describe how animals move. Students revisit pet s needs and how to take care of them. They expand their knowledge of math skills by extending by comparing quantities using the appropriate language. They revisit the seasons of the year and ask and tell the current day and date. Enduring Understandings The student will understand that: Concepts Family Animals Calendar Number Sense Celebrations & Traditions Guiding/Essential Questions Learning a language requires acquisition and memorization of vocabulary of familiar topics such as family and pets. Studying other s culture increases sensitivity and appreciation of one s own traditions as well as those of others. The study of languages enriches knowledge in other disciplines. A globally competent citizen communicates effectively in at least one language other than English. (Profile of the Learner) An effective communicator speaks clearly & articulately for varied purposes and audiences. (Profile of the Learner) An effective communicator listens actively & respectfully to the opinions and perspectives of others. (Profile of the Learner) Student Key Guiding Question- How are families the same or different? Why is memorization and acquisition of vocabulary such as family and pets important in language learning? How does learning Spanish enrich our knowledge in math and science? How does learning about Mexican family traditions increase our appreciation of other cultures and that of our own? Learning Targets
2 Proficiency Learning Targets The student will be able to correctly Identify and introduce family members. (KG) Ask and respond about family size and pets: Cuántas personas hay en tu familia? Cuántas mascotas tienes? Identify and describe pets and farm animals and their sounds. (KG) Use action words to describe how animals move. State whether animals are slow or fast. Tell how to take care of pets. (KG) Identify and say what a veterinarian does. Describe pets states of being and feelings. (KG) Calendar/ Math: Identify seasons. (KG) Ask and tell current day and date. Give a number greater than or less than another number within 30. (KG) refers to learning targets previously covered in Kindergarten. Culture Students demonstrate an understanding of practices such as family celebrations and family traditions from México when learning about the family structure. (ACTFL Standards 2.1, 2.2) Formative Assessments Formative assessments are employed by the teacher during the learning process in order to modify learning activities and to Iimprove student achievement. Use these assessments during the learning process to check for understanding. They respond to animal questions: Cómo hace el/la? Él/La hace Draw a sad or happy pet and as groups describe how the pet feels (Él/La está contento/a o triste). Presentational: Tell others how many siblings, members, and/or pets are in their family. Describe physical attributes of their pets. Present how they take care of their pet.
3 1.1 Interpersonal Communication-Communicate on some very familiar topics using single words and phrases that have been practiced and memorized. (ACTFL Proficiency Standard Novice-Low) Introduce family members. Ask and respond about their family size and pets. Ask and tell the current day and date. 1.2 Interpretive Listening- Listen to and recognize memorized words, phrases, expressions, predictable questions and very simple sentences spoken by the teacher and supported by visuals. (NL) Identify pets and farm animals and their sounds. State whether animals move slow or fast. Identify and say what a veterinarian does. Understand and describe pet s states of being and feelings. Identify the four seasons. Give a number greater than or less than another given number. Recognize Mexican family celebrations and traditions. 1.3 Presentational Speaking-Present information about myself and state vocabulary using memorized single words and phrases, when supported by visuals. (NL) Tell how they take care of pets. Tell whether animals are slow or fast. Describe pets states of being and feelings. State a number greater or less than a given number. Use place value to compare whole numbers up to 120 using comparative language. 4 Taking care of pets Veterinarian job description Pet s states of being and feelings Calendar: seasons, date, weather Math: Greater and less than, numbers 0-30 Facts Nouns and adjectives agree in gender (feminine or masculine) and number (singular or plural). If a noun ends in o or os, it is typically considered masculine. If a noun ends in a or as, it is typically considered feminine. Definite articles (el, la, los, las) are words that mean the. Indefinite articles (un, una, unos, unas) are words that mean a, an and some. When the subject is plural, ar, er, and ir verbs, add an n such as in él camina and ellos caminan. To describe animal sounds, one can ask, Cómo hace? or Qué sonido hace? An animal s nose is referred to hocico instead of nariz. Animal feet are referred to patas instead of pies. People have pies. Calendars of Spanish speaking countries usually begin with Monday as the first day of the week.
