1 ROSS SCHOOL OF BUSINESS EVENING MBA ASSOCIATION The Evening News Volume 1, Issue 1 September, 2005 The evening MBA Association is proud to announce... is proud to introduce the inaugural issue of The Evening News. We hope that this monthly newsletter will become a helpful and valued source of information for Ross Evening MBA students. We have so much to be proud of and excited about as Evening students. This newsletter will become a way of sharing this excitement with one another. Each issue will come out at the beginning of the month. Students are welcomed and encouraged to submit articles. We want to know about you and exists to promote and support the Evening MBA experience at the Stephen M. Ross School of Business. The primary goals of the Evening MBA Assoc. are: To provide professional, what you re doing. Did you just win a case competition?? Did you just celebrate the birth of a child?? Have you got some information we all could use on how to land that dream job?? Send it in by the 3rd Friday of the month and we ll put it in. We also will have a classified section in which students can advertise. Now you ll have a place to advertise those game tickets you can t use or that car that you need to sell. Because we want this to be a useful tool for students, we'd love your input. Give us your feedback. Let us know how we can make this a better newsletter. We hope you enjoy this and see this as a value added benefit of being an Evening student. We will be using this to cut down on some of the s that seem to always be going out to students. 2 P AGE 2 T HE EVENING NEWS About the Evening MBA Association (cont.) activities planned to the unique perspective and situation of the Evening MBA student. serves as an information source and support organization for each stage of involvement in the program: prospective students wishing to learn more about the program, new and current students navigating their way through opportunities and resources available in the Business School while facing work/school/life balance, and graduating students transitioning to the Alumni community. EveMBA supported events include: New Student Orientations, Prospective Student Evening MBA Information Sessions, Academic Advocacy Programs, Evening MBA Ambassador Program, Career Path and Career Change Panel Discussions, Annual Family Picnic, Semester Kick-off Gatherings, Graduation Celebrations, and Social and Networking Events. Membership is open to all registered Evening MBA students. We welcome and encourage students to become involved in the Evening MBA Association to maximize the potential of their experience here at Ross. For more information, please evemba-info@umich.edu. Many Opportunities to get involved Work Class Group Projects Studying Somewhere in our busy schedules we even spend time with our families and friends! The Evening MBA Program is a very rewarding adventure, yet there are myriad valuable experiences to be had in addition to the rigors of the academic program. Getting involved in clubs, attending events, and participating in social activities are essential ingredients to get the most out of the program during your time here. has several opportunities open to interested students. Evening mba ambassadors Each semester, Evening MBA students are entrusted with the task of conveying to both prospective and newly admitted students the talent, spirit, and tremendous opportunities available within the Ross School of Business community. Evening MBA Ambassadors serve an essential role as an information source by leveraging their familiarity of the MBA program, as well as their personal experience balancing work, school, and social life during the program. school sponsored events, the list of Ambassadors is distributed to prospective and new students, allowing interested individuals to contact them with further questions. The Ambassador contact list is also made available on the Evening MBA website. The mission of the Evening MBA Ambassador Program is to ensure that prospective and newly admitted Evening MBA students feel welcome at the Ross School of Business, while supplying them with the necessary information to allow them to make the right decisions for their own academic, career, and personal goals. Ambassadors are also encouraged to offer suggestions for creating an even better experience for prospective and admitted students. Ambassadors participate in Evening MBA Information Sessions for prospective students and attend Evening MBA Orientation for admitted students. These events are held in the summer, fall, and winter every year. 3 V OLUME 1, ISSUE 1 P AGE 3 Evening mba section leaders A section is a geographical grouping of Evening MBA students. Sections are meant to augment your opportunities as an Evening MBA student and enhance your enjoyment of UMBS. They are useful for: Networking Making contacts and establishing social and professional networks is much easier and viable in smaller, closer groups. Resources Students will have access to other students who live near them to facilitate the formation of study and/or carpooling groups. Community-building Evening students brought together in Sections can feel a stronger bond establishing new relationships and a real sense of community within the Ross School of Business - Evening MBA program. Reaching Out to New Students Prospective students considering admissions will be drawn to the benefits of Sections for building a network of friends and colleagues, as well as for academic reasons. Fun! Fun! Fun! - No explanation needed. Section Leaders plan events and activities for their assigned geographic areas. Past events have included happy hours, dinners, bowling, Tigers ballgame, canoeing, and coffee chats. We still need Section Leaders for Lansing, Detroit, Toledo, Kalamazoo, Troy, and Royal Oak areas. The Ann Arbor and Farmington Hills Section Lead positions have been filled, but if you have event ideas or would like to help with planning in these areas please contact your section lead. SIGN UP FOR SECTION EVENT NOTIFICATION TODAY!! Section event notification is not automatic; if you are interested in getting information about social, networking or professional events near where you work or live, please sign up for the impact group for your geographic area -- or sign up for more than one group! You can participate in any and all activities all across southeast Michigan and into Ohio. Once you have opted in to a section, you will be on the list for all events in that region. If you do not opt in, events may also be posted on the website or in future newsletters, but you may be missing out! Paul Singh has been busy completely redoing our website (bus.umich.edu/ evemba). Please check it out as it s a great resource for all evening students. Amit Mantrow has been busy putting together some great events for us such as the Board would like to welcome the incoming class. We look forward to meeting you at Orientation and we hope your time at Ross is rewarding and fun! We would also like to welcome back the returning evening students. We re all very excited about our new look on our website, our new newsletter, and the enthusiasm we re feeling all around us. Each officer will be introducing themselves over the next couple of months in the newsletter. Mindee Elam (our President) contributed the bulk of this newsletter in describing the Association and the opportunities we prefamily picnic at the end of September. Sriram Gopalan, our finance guy, has been jumping through all the university hoops to get us set up so we can spend our cash. Rajeev Jain is working on some awesome career development opportunities. Keep reading the newsletters to see details on those events. Vineet Kumar has been contacting companies and alumni to support the work of our association and provide more opportunities to our members. We re all looking forward to a great year!!

5 V OLUME 1, ISSUE 1 P AGE 5 VP OF COMMUNITY SERVICE SIDELIGHTS AS FARMINGTON HILLS SECTION LEADER Are you interested in community service, but aren't sure how to fit it in to your busy schedule? The Evening MBA Association can help! We have the EveMBA Adopt-A- Highway Day coming up on September 11, 2005! Please mark this date on your calendar to help out and also to meet other EveMBAs. Watch for more information shortly! The EveMBA Association will keep you in touch with community service events both in Ann Arbor and in the other areas that Evening MBA students live and work. If you would like to propose an idea for EveMBA service events or need EveMBA help in promoting an event that you are involved with, please drop me a line. I also serve as Section Leader for the Farmington Hills area i.e. F. Hills, Novi, Northville, etc. For all EveMBAs that live in these areas, please add EVEFhills to your IM- Pact profile. We plan to have many happy hours and other fun events! If you would like to propose an idea for our section to try out, please drop me a line or just stop me in the hallway to chat! If there is something in the newsletter that is missing or you have suggestions for improvement, I m always happy to hear them. One of the most exciting benefits of being on the association s board has been to hear about all the hard work that the university and specifically Paul Clyde (Eve MBA Academic Director) and his office are doing to improve our experience and its associated benefits here at Ross. Another has been to work with a group of committed students who are taking extra time out of their busy schedules to provide us all with opportunities for connections that will last a lifetime. ~Merrill Introducing vp of Academic affairs This is a very exciting time to be part of the evening MBA program. We have a great board and I am very proud to be serving as the VP of Academic Affairs for the calendar years. My role is to address any academic concerns that you may have, ranging anywhere from suggesting new courses to inquiring about dual degree offerings. I'm working on a variety of projects this year, the most exciting of which is the development of a list of suggested courses based on profession.
