5 Abu Dhabi Education Digest Facilities Highlights of Student Survey 2017 This descriptive brief was issued by the Research Office of the Department of Education and Knowledge (ADEK). It provides a clear and simple overview of the results of a recent survey that elicited parents opinions of the teaching, education, facilities and environment on offer in the schools their children attend. The purpose of the brief is to provide education policymakers, educators, principals, teachers and all relevant stakeholders with insights into the key issues associated with teaching and learning in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The Research Office fully understands the importance of the results obtained through this survey with regards to the field of education in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. As such, we take our role in attaining, studying, analyzing and promoting the associated data very seriously. It is envisaged that the work in this area will assist the ADEK to achieve the objectives set by the wise leadership of the UAE to achieve the strategic vision of the Emirate of Abu Dhabi by Education ADEK - Student Summary

6 What is meant by Students Satisfaction Survey? The Students Satisfaction Survey is conducted every two years. The questions in the survey are designed to assist the ADEK to make key decisions that shape the educational policy in the Emirate of Abu Dhabi. The ADEK is committed to establishing UAE national cadres and developing national human capital that possesses advanced scientific and technical capabilities. As such, schools need to offer an environment in which scientific creativity and innovation are encouraged. In theory, this survey relys on the idea that students constitute the major axis within the processes of learning and teaching, besides that they are closer and more involved in school evironment at different levels, and they are in direct interacttion with teachers, so they are the best candidates to provide a genuine viewpoint about teachers and school life to ADEK and all educational stakeholders. This year the number of students who participated in the survey was more than (78,000) students and the participation rate in some schools exceeded 90%. The Research Office at the ADEK studies the results of the survey and uses them to gain solid insights into the current state of education in Abu Dhabi schools. The outputs of this analysis are published in a booklet and are also available on the ADEK s website. 6 ADEK - Student Summary 2017

Percentage of Cycle 3 students interested in joining university for a four-year period: (67.6%) in private schools. (57.9%) in public schools. Students' Academic achievement: The percentages of students who think that their academic performance is above average to excellent are: (4.4%) 68.2% in private schools. (9.1%) 65.5% in public schools. Morale and general satisfaction with school: Percentage of those who believe that their school is excellent (4.4%) 59.5% (9.1%) 60.5% Education for social and personal development: Percentage of those who believe that school helps them increase their self-confidence: (4.4%) 72.9% (9.1%) 68.5% ADEK - Student Summary

16 What Does the Research Office Do? Helps Identify Key Research Priorities The Research Office is involved in identifying research priorities to help ADEK implement programs, plans and evaluations. It does so using these methods: Identifies key research needs of all ADEK sectors: The Research Office communicates with all ADEK sectors about their needs and collaborates on research projects as needed. Studies educational updates: The Research Office carefully studies updated educational information and thinks about how results of recent studies can be used to improve current programs as well as what areas of research are still needed. Carries Out Research In educational research, the Research Office studies ADEK operations with an eye toward resolving problems. Supports External Educational Research Initiatives The Research Office is interested in helping external educators conduct research related to education in their local systems, especially Middle Eastern educators such as those in the United Arab Emirates. It assists researchers in conducting ethical, scientifically-based research that aligns with cultural values and is designed to help improve the researchers educational systems. Promotes Research Culture The Research Office is invested in promoting a research culture in academic environments, especially among students. To do this it: Hosts research competitions to encourage students, faculty and community members to conduct original educational research. Finds local, regional and national educational awards and encourages students, faculty and community members to apply. 16 ADEK - Student Summary 2017
