1 Common Core Path to Achievement A Three Year Blueprint to Success

2 The Winds of Change Continue to Blow!!! By the beginning of the School Year, there will be a new accountability system in place in Illinois This new system is being developed by the Partnership for the Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) It will be linked to the Common Core Standards in English Language Arts and Math

3 PARCC PRIMARY GOAL OF PARCC To create an assessment system that will help states dramatically increase the number of students who graduate high school ready for college and careers and provide students, parents, teachers, and policymakers with the tools they need to help students from grade 3-high school stay on track and graduate prepared.

4 NEW ASSESSMENT SYSTEM FOUR MAJOR COMPONENTS Support for Lowest Performing Schools Longitudinal Data System Effective Teachers and Leaders Standards and Assessment

6 Longitudinal Data System Establish a statewide transcript system for middle and high school Integrate student level data with administrator data Expand connections to postsecondary and ultimately to careers Expand data collection to Early Childhood Think of a Pre-K to Grade 20 System

7 Supporting Great Teachers and Leaders Performance Evaluation Act of 2010 (PERA) Performance Evaluation Advisory Committee Redesign principal pre/teacher prep Higher cut scores and limited re-takes of basic skills test Not everyone who wants will become a teacher!

8 Standards and Assessment A NEW STATEWIDE ASSESSMENT SYSTEM WILL BE IN PLACE FOR THE 2014 (FALL) 2015 (SPRING) SCHOOL YEAR

9 Standards and Assessments What will the new assessment look like? Assessments will be computer based Performance tasks will be included PARCC assessments will be used for accountability, comparability and evaluations (teachers and principals) Assessments will provide timely feedback to inform instruction

10 Standards and Assessment What we know: ISAT and PSAE will be used until 2014 Pilot items will be incorporated into ISAT beginning with 2012 This will have an impact on scores

11 Standards and Assessment What we know: This is about Changing Instruction Teaching and assessing will look different We have to RAISE expectations for all kids and for teacher Common Core should be fully implemented in SY New Standards for Science and Social Studies are underway

13 Additional Thoughts About This Process A change in the Reading Assessment is coming: 50% will be on reading fiction and 50% on reading for information. We will need to continue to be focused on writing based on what they have read as well K-2 Assessments are coming. Our Kindergarten students this year, will be the first third grade class to take the new assessment The new third grade is the old sixth grade

14 Additional Thoughts About This Process It s no longer just about what kids know, It s about what kids can do with what they know In the new testing system, first, second, ninth and tenth grade students will also be tested We must begin to focus on what is important. We must teach fewer concepts in more depth than more concepts with less concentration. The textbook is not the curriculum guide. Standards must drive what we teach.

15 Additional Thoughts About This Process Going forward, we will be looking at new course sequence in the core area. At the high school, we will be looking to transition to Math I, Math II, Math III and Math IV. The same will be true for English, Science and Social Studies.

16 Additional Thoughts About This Process Outcomes need to be sequential and aligned to the Frameworks. New tests will be cumulative based on the sequencing outlined in the Frameworks Think Technology: Smart phones, ipads, netbooks and notebooks We must find a way to successfully utilize these devices in class and not ignore them as a learning tool.

17 Additional Thoughts About This Process We must include a significant parent component in this process

18 Additional Thoughts About This Process ASSESSMENTS Together we will begin the creation of rigorous, formative assessments beginning with the second semester of this school year. Staff should continue with current exit outcomes and assessments until the new assessments are complete.

Continued focus on standardized test scores and other data points The School Improvement Planning Process Continued focus on ensuring student success one student at a time Overall uncertainty about school finance in Illinois Comments about the District Budget Change continues to be a constant that we will deal with We will continue to use the 21 st Century Learning Center Grant Funds to provide additional opportunities for our students to succeed.

20 What will be Different? The National Common Core Standards in Reading and Mathhttp:// Our Exit Outcomes will need to be modified to reflect the new standards Authentic Assessments will need to be developed aligned to the Common Core Standards Our level of rigor must rise

21 What will be Different? We will need to develop a Certified Teacher and Administrator Evaluation Plan to incorporates new summative ratings and is based, in part, on student achievement. Public Act creates the need for this new evaluation plan

22 What will be Different? Some teaching assignments will be different as we deal with a declining student population base. We will start this year with approximately 944 students EC 12. (874 K-12) In we had 1182 students EC-12 on the sixth day of enrollment. (1122 K-12) Implications for West Central Budget and Staffing

23 What will be Different?? All teachers MUST teach differently going forward than in the past Outcomes, properly aligned to the common core standards must drive instruction We will be prescriptive in terms of telling you what to teach Technology must be integrated into your teaching pedagogy Emphasis must be on application of concepts and not just knowledge of concepts

25 Creating a Culture of Achievement Implications for District Staff All district staff must be willing to take responsibility for student success We know staff are working hard and we appreciate those efforts. We must continue that effort going forward. We must all remember that we are here to teach students and not necessarily a particular grade or subject All district staff members will be asked to do things differently than perhaps they have been done in the past. Change is the only constant that we deal with. All of us must find new ways to do old things!!

26 Why do this? Our long term viability as a district depends on our ability to attract and retain students and families into our district. To not do what is being suggested, means the district will surely fail in our mission to Provide Opportunity, Expect Excellence and we will undoubtedly lose students which in turn means a loss of programs and staff
