1 NORWIN SCHOOL DISTRICT JOB DESCRIPTION JOB ANALYSIS Under the direction of the Assistant Superintendents of Elementary and Secondary Education, the shall set the direction for their department for the maximum benefit of Norwin School District students. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS 1. Works with other department heads to promote a curriculum that is vertically and horizontally articulated. 2. Assists in the yearly updating of the department s curriculum. 3. Calls and conducts monthly meetings of the department to communicate District policies and procedures and files reports of those meetings with the Assistant Superintendents of Elementary Education and Secondary Education and the Director of Special Education and Student Services. 4. Works with the Assistant Superintendents of Elementary and Secondary Education, the Director of Special Education and Student Services and building principals to keep department members aware of current trends in her/his subject area. 5. Plans and monitors department budget and purchases and advises the Building Principals of department needs. 6. Prepares course of studies for student scheduling in conjunction with members of the department. 7. Assists in the recruitment, screening, interviewing, training and assignment of department personnel. 8. Assists in establishing, implementing and evaluating department curriculum objectives. 9. Assumes leadership in the selection of guidance resources in coordination with the Assistant Superintendents of Elementary Education and Secondary Education, building principals and department. 10. Attends relevant school, District and professional meetings, including summer workshops and participates in relevant professional organizations.
2 JOB DESCRIPTION, CONTINUED Page 2 of Acts as resource person for department members on department curriculum and instruction questions. 12. Assists the building principal and Assistant Superintendents of Elementary Education and Secondary Education in working with individual department members to improve the duties and roles of K-12 guidance counselors. 13. Assists the Assistant Superintendents of Elementary Education and Secondary Education in providing mentor teacher services for department inductees. 14. Assists in the evaluation, interpretation and use of appropriate test data to improve standardized test protocols and to communicate with teachers and parents. 15. Assists with the design and review of the Norwin Course of Studies Booklet. 16. Sets an example of professionalism and leadership for other members of the department. 17. Assists at graduation exercises as required. 18. Attends the annual Scheduling Fair held at Norwin High School. 19. Responsible for the upkeep and maintenance of the department webpage on the District site. 20. In conjunction with members of the department, identifies annual goals and reports progress on the goals to respective administrators and Assistant Superintendents of Elementary Education and Secondary Education. 21. Coordinates the review and updates to the K-12 guidance curriculum. 22. Collaborates with other educators in the implementation of the K-12 guidance curriculum. 23. Assists building principals in the assignment of counseling duties (i.e.: PSSA test administration, AP test administration). 24. Assists in the coordination of K-12 guidance lessons, which include topics of career planning, bullying, and character education, for example. 25. Consults with teachers about student mental health issues. 26. Assists in the coordination of the District Student Assistance Program. 27. Facilitates monthly K-12 guidance meetings. 28. Provides information to staff regarding the comprehensive school counseling program.
3 JOB DESCRIPTION, CONTINUED Page 3 of Reviews, annually, with guidance counselors, an overview of changes and/or updates to the PSSA, and other state-mandated testing programs. 30. Communicates to K-12 guidance counselors their roles and responsibilities during PSSA and other state-mandated testing. 31. Recommends PSSA and other state-mandated testing protocol to District administrators. 32. At the beginning of each school year, collects PSSA data on targeted students and disseminates this data to relevant District administrators. 33. Collects and analyzes data to guide guidance program direction and effectiveness. 34. Assists in the coordination of K-12 guidance counselors during a schoolwide crisis. 35. Demonstrates knowledge of District and community resources and shares these with K-12 guidance counselors. 36. Assists in the organization of annual parent orientation and transition events. 37. Performs normal guidance duties. 38. Performs other duties consistent with the position as may be assigned. COGNITIVE ABILITIES Ability to establish and maintain productive working relationships with staff, business associates, and general community. Ability to work on multiple tasks and prioritize appropriately. Ability to recognize areas of concern relating to department leadership issues and propose or recommend appropriate solutions to problems. Ability to communicate effectively. Ability to exercise initiative and make independent decisions to reschedule work to meet deadlines or to effectively handle emergency work.
4 JOB DESCRIPTION, CONTINUED Page 4 of 6 PROFESSIONAL QUALIFICATIONS Requirements for the position include: Minimum of five years teaching experience in the respective department. Masters degree in School Counseling. Ability to perform the above responsibilities at a high level. REPORTS TO Building Principal and Assistant Superintendent of Elementary and Secondary Education. POSITION REQUIREMENTS Physical Demands: Occasional travel to School District offices, buildings, classroom and grounds. Occasional traversing throughout various buildings. Often sitting for extended periods. Standing for periods of time. Moderate lifting from pounds. Some moving of various items - up to 30 pounds. Manual dexterity to use office equipment. Repetitive operation of computer keyboard. Sensory Abilities: Ability to communicate effectively in all aspects of the job. Work Environment: Generally, office setting year round. Temperament: Ability to work as a leader, coordinator and a member of a team. Must be courteous and able to effectively manage job responsibilities.

Ability to be respectful and empathetic toward students. Workplace Expectations: Ability to follow directions and give direction to others. Ability to create and delegate assignments. Ability to complete assigned tasks without supervision. Ability to communicate, comprehend and perform complex computations. Ability to use correct grammar, sentence structure and spelling. Ability to compose clear, concise sentences and paragraphs. Ability to organize office setting to efficiently accomplish tasks. Ability to multitask. Ability to work independently and make work-related decisions. Ability to exercise good judgment in prioritizing tasks. Ability to communicate effectively at all organizational levels. Ability to operate office equipment. Ability to use computer technology efficiently including word processing, presentation/webpage software, PowerPoint and Excel software applications. Ability to appropriately handle confidential information in accordance with District policies. Ability to use technology for group meetings, presentations (i.e. overhead, document camera, projector and video equipment). Driver s License: Must have a valid PA driver s license. Clearances: Must have valid Act 34 (Criminal Record Check), Act 151 (Child Abuse History Check) and FBI (Federal Bureau of Investigation) Criminal History Check. Must also complete and submit an Arrest/Conviction Report and Certification Form required by Pennsylvania Act 24 of TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT Terms and conditions of employment shall be per the Norwin Education Association Collective Bargaining Agreement.
