3 New Hall School New Hall School is a leading HMC and IAPS boarding and day school for boys and girls aged Founded in 1642, New Hall School is one of the oldest Catholic schools and the largest Catholic boarding and day school in the UK. New Hall is a strong and thriving community, set in a stunning location on the edge of the city of Chelmsford, just 20 minutes by train from London Stratford and 30 minutes from London Liverpool Street. There are also plans for Network Rail to open a new station at the foot of New Hall s Avenue; this is due to be completed by At New Hall we operate the highly successful diamond model structure, i.e. co-education in the Preparatory Division (ages 3-11), single-sex education in the Boys Division and Girls Division (11-16) and co-education in the Sixth Form (16-18). In this way, New Hall provides the best of both worlds: the benefits of a co-educational environment together with the advantages of girls and boys being taught separately from age The provision of single-sex education during formative years enables students to grow in confidence, whilst enjoying an education that is specifically tailored and that recognises the different ways in which boys and girls learn. New Hall School was awarded Independent School of the Year for 2016 in the Times Education Supplement school awards, and Financial Initiative of the Year (2016) for our Green Travel and Transport Strategy. New Hall was assessed as outstanding in its 2013 Diocesan and 2014 (Boarding) inspection, and as excellent (the highest category) in its 2016 ISI inspection. There is an exciting School Development Plan, which has the continued strengthening of the school s academic standing as the priority. Following the successful opening of two new junior boarding houses (ages 7-13) and a new Sixth Form Centre, in there will be significant investment in: digital technologies; sport; recreational facilities; Forest School provision; staff accommodation; Chaplaincy; a new Pre-Prep Division building (opening in 2018); expansion of the Preparatory Division to 3-form entry; and planning for a new STEM Centre. Students can board from ages 7-18 in one of six boarding houses. High academic expectations and achievements, together with outstanding pastoral care and exceptional drama, music and sports facilities and provision, together make New Hall a wonderful place to be educated. 5 The Learning Development Department The Learning Development Department is an important department at New Hall that caters for pupils with special educational needs, the Most Able and Talented, and pupils for whom English is an Additional Language (EAL). The Department occupies a suite of rooms that include a resource area and private teaching areas ideal for small group and one-to-one teaching. The learning difficulties currently supported by the Department include dyslexia, dyspraxia, dyscalculia, Aspergers, ADD and ADHD. The school operates a policy of some small group withdrawal teaching, together with a wideranging programme of in-class support. Some pupils are withdrawn from French and latin for increased one to one or small group work. All pupils are encouraged to develop their basic IT skills and programs recommended by the British Dyslexia Association and Dyslexia Action are used to reinforce teaching. There are excellent links with New Hall Senior School, which enables pupils to make a smooth transition from the primary to the secondary phase of their education. Staff in the Learning Development Department take great pride not only in fostering the highest academic achievements possible for all pupils with learning differences and special educational needs but also in raising their self-confidence and self-esteem.

6 Teaching at New Hall School As a teacher at New Hall School, you will enjoy working in a vibrant community with a strong sense of team work. Students are taught Monday to Friday, with the exception of EAL classes which take place on a Saturday. All teachers at New Hall School are expected to contribute outside the classroom, either by participating in games or supporting another area within the co-curricular provision. There is also a requirement to contribute to the boarding provision by supporting a boarding event or outing during an evening or weekend (normally once per term). In addition, all teachers contribute to the outstanding pastoral care of students through the tutor system. New Hall is a busy, fast-paced environment. The hours are long during the week but this is complemented by long school holidays, polite and enthusiastic students, tranquil surroundings, a generous salary scale, and complimentary restaurant-quality lunch each day! 7 Job Description The SENCo Job Description is listed below. The SENCo in the Preparatory Division is line managed by the Head of Learning Development). There will be a teaching commitment to this role to teach special needs classes. To contribute to, and update the whole school SEN Policy document on a cycle predetermined by SLT, alongside the Head of Learning Development, Senior Division. To ensure that all teachers adhere to the SEN Code of Practice: 0 to 25 years To liaise closely with the Head of EAL (Whole School) and Head of Learning Development (Senior Division) and DSL (Preparatory Division) To liaise closely with the with the Vice Principal (Curriculum and Growth, Innovation) 1. Organisation and General Management The quality and standard of work in the Department depends on the inspiration, dynamism, guidance and example of the SENCo. In the case of this Department, this includes: 1.1 To line manage a team of Learning Support Assistants (LSAs) to ensure pupils are supported appropriately throughout the school, including their performance management process 1.2 To maintain the SEN Register, available to all staff online and on isams, and update it promptly with new information 1.3 To co-ordinate the teaching of pupils with learning difficulties and special educational needs, by both teachers and LSAs, within and outside curriculum time 1.4 To work closely with other teachers to evaluate and develop the support offered to pupils and the teaching strategies used, and to contribute to other aspects of the general on-going development of the department. This will include taking responsibility for the department Development Plan 1.5 To organise and timetable, on isams, all Learning Support lessons 1.6 To be responsible for keeping records, Educational Psychologist s Reports and evidence of need and normal way of working, to be used to inform applications for Access Arrangements in both public and internal examinations in KS2 1.7 To understand the learning experiences of pupils in the division, by visiting lessons and department areas, and to use these to inform practice and pupil support 1.9 To participate in the induction of new staff 1.10 To deliver INSET to all teaching staff and LSAs as appropriate 1.11 To liaise closely with the Registrar on applicants with learning difficulties and to meet with prospective parents, as required 1.13 To liaise with staff in feeder schools, as necessary for the smooth transition of pupils into the next phase of their education 1.14 To be responsible for pupils with Statements/ EHCPs, overseeing their Annual and Transition Reviews and the completion of documentation required by law

Curriculum 2.1 To secure high standards of learning and teaching in the department, ensuring that there are intervention programs in place to meet individual needs before, during and after school 2.2 To oversee the Review and Personal Plans for pupils on SEN Support 2.3 To arrange and carry out Pupil Outcome Meetings twice per year, for all pupils on the SEN Support, with the pupil, parent/s and Class Teacher present, and to write up a record of what was discussed, to be sent to the family 2.3 To assist and monitor the preparation of resource materials for use in the Learning Development Department 2.4 To liaise with Subject Leaders and Class Teachers on differentiated teaching and learning, enabling pupils with learning difficulties to access the curriculum and attain their underlying ability 2.5 To monitor, assess and record pupils progress using strategies in accordance with department and school policies. This will include maintaining and updating the year group Provision Maps in collaboration with the teachers and LSAs 2.6 Working closely with other teachers to evaluate and develop the courses offered to pupils and the teaching strategies used, and contributing to other aspects of the general on-going development of SEN support. This will include taking responsibility for aspects of the Prep Development Plan. 2.6 To attend Pupil Progress meetings to discuss pupils on the SEN Register, providing support and advice to teachers, having analysed and interpreted relevant school data relating to these pupils 2.7 To identify pupils with learning difficulties and to put in place suitable arrangements for the teaching of these pupils - to organise and implement individual follow-up screening - where individual screening flags up a potential learning difficulty, to communicate with parents and help them to understand the need for further in school, or a full, assessment from an Educational Psychologist - to meet with parents and/or an Educational Psychologist to discuss findings and to discuss recommendations - to liaise with outside agencies, such as Local Authority Personnel, Educational Psychologists, Speech and Language Therapists, Medical Consultants, Advisors and Social Services - to organise and co-ordinate ongoing diagnosis of any pupil referred to the department in the course of the year - to carry out further internal specialist assessments to support findings and to help staff with the teaching and learning of that pupil 2.8 To liaise closely with the Examinations Manager with regard to Access Arrangements for SATS

Other 3.1 To manage all budgets associated with this role 3.2 To undertake any other reasonable and relevant duties in accordance with the changing needs of the school 3.3 To ensure pupils work is regularly marked, giving constructive feedback 3.4 To create an environment conducive to learning and teaching, including appropriate departmental displays 3.5 To attend assemblies and collective worship 3.6 To attend staff meetings and functions as appropriate, including events and activities, which may run in the evening and at the weekend 3.7 To demonstrate confident use of ICT to enhance teaching 3.8 To liaise, as appropriate, with our sponsored primary school to assist with learning support provision (eg INSET, resources) and school development. All staff are responsible for promoting and safeguarding the welfare of pupils at New Hall School by ensuring compliance with the school s Safeguarding and Child Protection Policy at all times. It is a requirement of all staff to report any actual or potential risks to the safety or welfare of pupils to the Designated Safeguarding Lead. This document summarises the main responsibilities of the post. All staff are required to undertake whatever else may reasonably be requested by the Head of Preparatory Division and Principal in support of the Aims of the School. 10 Person Specification This post would particularly suit a candidate seeking career development and opportunities to develop leadership and management skills, in this dynamic and forward thinking school. All candidates should have a clear understanding of, and a commitment to, the aims of a Catholic independent school, and be committed to the values and ethos at the heart of New Hall School as expressed, for example, in the Mission Statement of the school Education Essential University graduate and qualified teacher, with an ability to teach up to, and including, KS2 pupils Hold a post graduate (Level 5) qualification in SpLD. Desirable Hold a SENCo qualification Experience of leading a Learning Development team Hold a post graduate (Level 7) qualification in SpLD, which includes at least 100 hours relating to individual specialist assessment, or the willingness to undertake the training for this qualification Experience Experienced teacher with a minimum of 2 years teaching Skills and Aptitudes A clear understanding of the new National Curriculum, assessment and modern teaching techniques Experience of independent Preparatory education To be able to contribute to the co-curricular life of the school An appreciation of the need to prepare pupils for Entrance Examinations Excellent communication, organisational and management skills Excellent IT skills, in particular Excel Disposition and personal qualities An understanding of the importance of promoting and safeguarding the welfare of children Willingness to participate enthusiastically in all aspects of boarding school life Common sense and initiative Ability to relate effectively to primary aged pupils Ability to motivate others and build teams

12 Salary & Benefits Salary New Hall School has its own salary scale up to a current maximum of 43,122pa (fte at September 2017 rates). A competitive salary will be offered, together with the generous benefits detailed below. School fee remission Staff fee remission is granted (pro rata for part time staff) in accordance with the provision at the time of commencing employment at New Hall. If your child is aged 3-11 and joins New Hall Preparatory School, there is a reduction of one third of the day fees net of prompt payment discount. If your child is aged and joins New Hall Senior School, there is a reduction of two thirds of the day fees net of prompt payment discount. Places for staff children are subject to space availability and the normal entry assessments. If the acceptance of a job offer is dependent on your child/children attending New Hall please contact the admissions team on to verify whether there is availability within the year group/s. You will need to complete an application form for fee remission, available from the HR Department. This must be done prior your child starting the school or the remission will only apply from the following term. Pension Teaching staff are able to join the national Teachers Pension Agency (TPA) pension scheme. Pension contribution rates are variable, currently between 7.4% per annum and 11.7% per annum, dependent on salary (employee), and 16.48% (employer). Training New Hall is committed to professional development of staff and will support further inservice training as required. There are generous INSET and Continuing Professional Development (CPD) budgets Meals Staff are provided with complimentary lunch and break time refreshments during term time. Sports Membership Staff are entitled to free membership of the school fitness suite which comprises a large range of cardiovascular equipment and free weights. We also offer staff a generously discounted rate of membership to the New Hall Sports Club which includes use of our 25-metre, 6-lane indoor swimming pool & 10 floodlit tennis/netball courts. Laptops Senior School teaching staff receive a New Hall laptop and ipad.
