2 MILLFIELD Millfield is one of the largest co-educational boarding school in the UK with over 1200 pupils, aged The pupil body is comprised of 75% full boarders and 25% day pupils. Located in Street in Somerset, the school is set in 150 acres of beautiful campus with outstanding facilities including an Olympic sized pool, two gymnasiums, a golf course, equestrian centre, concert hall, theatre, art gallery and music centre. The Prep School, for ages 2-13, is located four miles away at Glastonbury. The school has in its 80 year history achieved significant growth. Established in 1935 by Jack Boss Meyer with six princes from India, today it is an international, multi-faith school welcoming young people from all backgrounds and over 70 nationalities. Millfield may be one of the bigger independent schools, but its ethos remains to discover and develop the potential of every pupil. The school has been structured to make sure it is friendly, approachable and focused on the unique needs of each individual. Millfield provides a broad and balanced education which not only prepares pupils for public examinations but also gives them the confidence to achieve success throughout their adult lives. The school offers an exceptionally wide range of courses whilst still allowing pupils' programmes to be tailored to individual needs. Innovation remains at the heart of the school with a commitment to continually refine how to offer an exceptional and fully rounded education. Recent examples of this include the launch of Nine at Millfield, a dynamic Year 9 programme, and the use of pupil ipads to promote digital learning ART AND DESIGN The Art, Design & Technology department has ten full-time and four part-time members of staff supported by four technicians. Separate subject areas for Art & Design, Design Technology and Food & Nutrition are housed together within very well resourced, custom-built facilities which are lavishly equipped for 21 st century teaching. The top class facilities allow tutors to develop their ideas for teaching and learning, enabling pupils to reach their full potential within small sets (typically 10 12). The department works as a team to make the study of Art, Design & Technology stimulating for all. Tutors teach to all ages (13 18) and abilities within their specialist area(s). The department benefits from a diversity of talent among its tutors, which makes it a very innovative and stimulating environment in which staff can develop skills and expertise across the whole department. In Year 9 all pupils follow a curriculum which includes separate lessons of Art & Design, Design Technology and Food & Nutrition taught by subject specialists. All of these subjects are popular GCSE options in Years 10 and 11. In the Sixth Form the department offers a wide range of courses including the BTEC National Diploma (Level 3) in Art & Design. 3 Design Technology: Food & Nutrition: Design Technology/Product Design GCSE, AS, A2 Food & Nutrition GCSE Food Science and Nutrition (Level 3 Certificate) Leiths Basic Certificate in Food and Wine The department runs a considerable number of curricular and co-curricular trips and events throughout the academic year. These include residential and day visits to various galleries and institutions such as Tate Galleries in London and Liverpool, Leeds City Art Gallery, the Yorkshire Sculpture Park and the National Museum of Film and Photography in Bradford. Pupils visit The Clothes Show Live and a Fashion show is often held showing designs and garments made by pupils. Trips to the Design Museum and weekend cookery courses at Rick Stein s restaurant in Padstow also illustrate the breadth of interest and activities that have taken place across the department. Optional trips during holiday periods to New York, Savannah, Paris, Barcelona, Madrid and more exotic cultural destinations such as Egypt, India and the Middle East have been taken as well as the annual European BTEC visit to the galleries of Berlin and Munich. Members of the department offer a wide range of ADT related co-curricular options as part of Millfield s extensive extracurricular programme. Within the Food and Nutrition department these include Creative Cooks, Cooking for entertainment, and Sugar Craft workshops. Across the wider department sculpture workshops; sketchbook improvement; photography; animation and digital image manipulation courses are offered. Art Scholars is a well-established and thriving area of the department. It involves the bringing together of all the department s scholars aged Art scholars attend two sessions each week (after school) during the priority time allocated to the department by the school; currently Monday and Friday. A programme of work taught by tutors provides every opportunity for scholars to develop individually and collectively and allows them to demonstrate their skills and progress. JOB DESCRIPTION I. TEACHER IN CHARGE OF BTEC ART & DESIGN is responsible, with the Head of Art, Design and Technology for providing co-ordination, planning, leadership and assessment of the BTEC National Diploma in Art and Design. II. TEACHER IN CHARGE OF BTEC ART & DESIGN is responsible, with the Head of Art, Design and Technology in the following areas (in relation to the teaching of the BTEC course): Developing teaching and learning, including the appropriate use of ICT Create assessment plans Ensure Schemes of Work are in place and continually updated, and all staff are participative and collaborative in this important process Ensure that the programme handbook, pupil handbook and BTEC policies are up to date, issued to the relevant parties when required and adhered to Ensure assessment records and pupil work are up to standard for sampling and work with the standards verifier to ensure appropriate sampling takes place Monitoring pupil performance and organising intervention where required to enable pupils to achieve their potential Keep up-to-date with subject and course developments and external requirements from examination boards and awarding bodies; manage curriculum development and change accordingly
4 Ensure that the standardisation of work and course administration is consistent across the department Contribute to the review and evaluation of BTEC courses, to include an annual Department Self-Review BTEC submission to the Head of Department as required Coordinate and direct regular team meetings to review the delivery of the course, including standardisation, assessment plans, assignments and assessment decisions Attend BTEC course leader meetings (chaired by the Quality Nominee) and collaborate with BTEC course leaders in other department to share good practice Liaise with the Quality Nominee regarding external moderation of BTEC courses and quality review visits Liaise with the Examinations Officer to ensure the appropriate registration and certification of learners Work with the Head of Department to develop the ADT department s provision of extracurricular activities, to include: competitions; entrepreneurial challenges; guest speakers; trips; workshops Annually review departmental handbook entries and update as required Working with the Head of Department to carry out lesson observations and learning walks across the different BTEC classes to promote excellent teaching and learning and share good practice The day to day management of the ADT team including the organisation of cover III. TEACHER IN CHARGE OF BTEC ART & DESIGN will act as the lead internal verifier for the course and will: Be accredited as Lead IV following OSCA training Determine an IV sampling plan of tutor assessed pupil assignments Carry out IV of assignment briefs and pupil assignments, L6 and U6, and complete feedback documentation ongoing throughout the course Liaise with the Standards Verifier for provision of sample to be sent to SV Complete Pupil Report Forms at end of course and sign off for certification Arrange standardisation exercises for tutors. Advise tutors on assessment matters and design of assignments briefs particular to Art and Design
5 BENEFITS OF SERVICE Millfield School has high expectations of its staff and therefore looks to reward them with generous salary scale increments and beneficial conditions of service. All teachers are offered membership of the Teachers Pension Scheme and have longer holidays than the maintained sector. Class sizes are small (typical class sizes of 8-14) and most teachers have their own classroom. All teachers are issued with an ipad as part of our mobile learning project (there is a strong focus on the use of technology to support teaching and learning). A wide range of opportunities for professional development exist and staff are encouraged to develop their skills and consider career options at all levels. There is ample opportunity to take on additional responsibilities for which there are allowances. Fee concessions are available across the pre-prep, prep and senior school. Millfield is set in beautiful grounds and staff are welcome to make use of the extensive leisure and sporting facilities (which includes gym, swimming pool, golf course, tennis courts, squash courts etc.) for themselves and their immediate family. All staff enjoy free on-site parking. Heavily subsidised lunches (of outstanding quality) and free refreshments are available throughout the day. Each member of the teaching staff has a voice on professional matters via the Common Room Chair. The ability to join a strong community through a number of social events (Staff Bar, Staff sports leagues etc.) is encouraged. Millfield is a dynamic and incredibly rewarding place to work with a strong sense of community.
6 GENERAL INFORMATION Full-time teachers at Millfield are expected to: Play a full part in the extensive games and activities programme. Be a group tutor attached to a boarding or day house. Be attached to a boarding house as a liaison tutor, doing a weekly evening duty, for which an additional allowance is paid. Millfield School is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff to share this commitment. Offers of appointment are subject to satisfactory references and DBS clearance. Staff are normally expected to find their own accommodation. Millfield School has adopted the school-wide use of mobile technologies in teaching and learning, and applicants are expected to develop their own skills and teaching to make appropriate use of such opportunities.
