2 Reporting to: The Headmaster & Deputy Headmaster Responsible for: All external Activities and Sports Coaching staff, academic members of staff assisting/teaching within the department. Context The Director of Sport should be an experienced and qualified Physical Education specialist and ideally with experience in leading a department. He or she will be required to coordinate the delivery of sport across all Key Stages, and teach children ordinarily from the ages of 7 (4) to 13 years of age. They should possess the necessary vision and drive to develop sporting centres of excellence within the school. To be responsible for overseeing and monitoring the progress of all pupils in the field of PE and Games. To develop an outstanding PE curriculum, supported by comprehensive schemes of work, which recognises and develops boys key physical and sporting skills and age appropriate physiological development. To co-ordinate and develop the coaching programme and manage the professional coaching staff. To keep up to date records in accordance with school policy, following guidelines on assessment. To support the recruitment of pupils through the organization of engaging and supportive sporting events (e.g. Pre-Prep competitions / coaching sessions). To play an active role in the recruitment of prospective pupils through an active engagement in external clubs and societies. To maintain disciplined, safe and well planned lessons. To keep abreast of Health and Safety developments and implement these as appropriate. To establish a sound working relationship with parents and to be available to talk to them at any reasonable time. To attend such occasions as are deemed part of the annual cycle of the school year (e.g. parents evenings, open days, marketing events). To organize and attend weekend fixtures or annual tournaments as they arise. To liaise with other schools to develop a regular calendar of fixtures in the optimum number of team games. Together with the Swimming Coach, to organise a school Swimming Gala for pupils in all Key Stages To implement and run a house competition each term in the major sports (Rugby, Swimming, Cricket and Football)

3 To organize a sports assembly every other week. To update the school social media pages with information relating to the School and also to media that the school community might find interesting. To maintain a progressive St John s P.E. development plan and P.E. handbook. To keep an up to date resources and equipment inventory. To plan and organize an annual Sports Day for all pupils, maintaining a record of all individual sports day records and winners. To ensure that all coaching staff and supported and qualified to a high standard within each relevant sporting area. To develop links with outside agencies that support further the work of the department. To provide a recognized and well organized programme of scholarship preparation form Year 6 for secondary schools.

4 ESSENTIAL EDUCATION AND QUALIFICATIONS QTS To be educated to degree standard. DESIRABLE Post Graduate qualification in Sport Science of similar. EXPERIENCE Extensive knowledge and experience of Physical Education and human physiology Experience of working with children aged from 7-13 Leading and managing people. Knowledge of Primary or Preparatory School/ Education environment. To be able and willing to play a role in the Middle and Upper School, where necessary. SKILLS & ABILITIES To actively support the religious life and ethos of the school. To possess proven success in the coaching of boys sports (particularly rugby, football and cricket) To be imaginative and demonstrate flair for teaching in a single sex (boys) environment. To have excellent organisational skills. To be firm but fair. To be a team leader. To possess and expect high standards of conduct from your pupils. To be an excellent communicator, orally and in writing, with boys, parents and other staff. To be able to talk in public with confidence. To have good time management skills. To be discreet and adhere to confidentiality. To have excellent interpersonal skills. To be willing to attend courses and conferences. To be able to manage a department budget. To play a supportive role in the religious and liturgical life of the school. 5 The importance of boys participating, enjoying and contributing to a wide variety of sports is extremely important to their daily routine. It is widely recognised that a healthy lifestyle contributes enormously to a child s sense of achievement and happiness. It is however important that boys are offered a wide variety of sports in which they can compete. Doing so widens the scope for boys of all ability to contribute to the life of the school and also encourages a wider range of sporting skills. With outstanding facilities and dedicated coaching staff, our boys have the opportunity to regularly participate in and enjoy a rich variety of sports and activities as part of their weekly Games and PE provision. In addition to internal practice sessions and animal (house) competitions, all boys from Years 3-8 annually play in excess of 400 competitive fixtures across a range of sporting codes versus other schools. This affords them numerous opportunities to learn the values mirrored in the game of school and life, which we aim to nurture. Games: During the Michaelmas term (September to December) we coach rugby. During the Easter term the boys will play football, with a selected group continuing with rugby sevens. During the summer months from April to July cricket is the major team sport. Alongside this, the School s swimming, tennis, rowing and golf teams train and compete throughout the year. We also prepare teams to participate in local and regional cross country, triathlon/biathlon and athletics fixtures. In recent times our rugby, cricket and swimming teams have enjoyed significant touring opportunities locally and abroad: for example our 1st XV squad enjoyed a challenging but ultimately successful unbeaten tour to South Africa in PE: Boys in Nursery to Year 2 enjoy a full PE curriculum on a weekly basis alongside swimming lessons. From Years 3-8 we aim to provide a more varied curriculum. All boys will take part in swimming lessons which run alongside basketball, indoor hockey, gymnastics, tennis and athletics.

6 FACILITIES Dermot Gogarty Sports Centre Built in 2009, in memory of former Headmaster Mr Dermot Gogarty, the Sports Centre at St John s Beaumont consists of a fully equipped Sports Hall, Fitness Suite, Ancillary Rooms and a fantastic Climbing Wall. The Sports Centre is open between 8am and 10pm, 7-days a week. Sports Hall The Sports Hall can be divided into two areas and includes facilities for; Basketball; full court or two half courts with adjustable baskets 5-aside football and goals to match Badminton, with a total of 4 badminton courts and nets Volleyball Cricket, with a total of 4 net lanes and a bowling machine Fitness Suite This private Fitness Suite includes; 2 x Treadmills 6 x Concept 2 Rowing Machines (which can be raced on a big screen) 2 x Cycling Machines (one upright and one Recumbent) Ancillary Halls The Maxwell Room can be used as an extension to the Sports Hall, or as a room on its own. Indoor Golf, Gymnastics, Judo, Martial Arts and fencing are just some of the activities that the Maxwell Room is used for. The Kostka Performance Studio is used for, but not restricted to, Drama, Dance, Pilates and Yoga. It can also be used as a meeting room or viewing area for the Sports Hall. Climbing Wall The Climbing Wall at St John s Beaumont is 8-metres in height, and boasts 12 routes of varying difficulty for children and adults to attack the summit. Children from 7* years of age can use the Climbing Wall, with a maximum of 6 people using it at a time. There is a viewing balcony half way up the Wall, which allows people to spectate and encourage climbers, whilst also providing opportunities to develop teams and trust within groups. *This age is a guide for us. The suitability of younger children to climb our Wall is based on their size, and how they fit into one of our harnesses. Sports Fields Within our 50 acre site, our sports fields house the capability for a large number of sports, including rugby, football, athletics, cricket and cricket nets. All-weather tennis courts With 4 flood-lit tennis courts at St John s Beaumont, there is lots of space for Tennis to form a part of the Boys curriculum, and for members of the public to book lessons or just hire a court to play.

7 The Swimming Pool The indoor heated swimming pool is 25m in length and extensively used by pupils of all ages and groups from outside of the School community. Golf In April 2017 a new golf driving range and putting green was installed on the front field for boys to use, under supervision, to improve their golfing skills.
