From the Director s Desk We welcome our new Hon ble Vice Chancellor of BPUT Prof J K Satapathy, a renowned academician from NIT Rourkela and the author of a number of seminal books in Electrical Engineering. We hope he ushers in revolutionary change in the role and responsibilities of BPUT and the community of technical institutes of Orissa. These are epoch-making times for the technical education in our country as we try to raise the Gross Enrollment Ratio to 25% by The MHRD Ministry under Hon ble Minister Kapil Sibal, has gone ballistic in bringing in much desired change in the education system in our country. Only time will tell if radical moves such as no Class X examinations, inviting foreign universities to setup local campuses, stricter regulatory regime, 2 nd shift in engineering colleges, etc., will herald a new era. A great beginning has been made we await the implementation and the nitty-gritty as they say, God is in the details. At a recent Principals meeting held in the campus of a top IT company, the following qualities were considered a must for all incoming recruits in the same order of importance as given: Teamwork, Honesty,Communication skills, Interpersonal skills, Initiation/Motivation, Analytical skills, GPA. I look forward to the views of NIST e- news readers on this. I congratulate the NIST Robotics Club team members on their wonderful win in the Robocon event. Inspite of having top contenders such as IIT, Mumbai and IIT, Delhi, the lads of Berhampur gave a wonderful display to win the Most Innovative Idea Award from among the 45 top institutes vying for the honor. A thumbs up for the team and the Faculty Coordinator: Nihar R Sahu. The NIST Musical Society (NMS) band has notched up a number of awards at NIT, ITER, NMIET. Congratulations. With Best Wishes, March 15, 2010 Sangram Mudali NRC won National Award at ROBOCON-10 NIST Robotics Club (NRC), the only private Engineering College from Eastern India, participated in the 8 th ROBOCON 2010, the National Level Robotics Competition, organized by Doordarshan, India in collaboration with MIT, Pune, during 4 th 6 th March Contending with 45 top engineering institutes of the country, including all IITs and NITs, NIST was awarded with the National Award for Best Idea in Designing the Robots and was felicitated with a Trophy. It was a moment of pride and glory for NRC members receiving this national honor from Mr. Lakshmendra Kumar Chopra, Senior Director, Prasar Bharti Doordarshan Mumbai. A total of 17 student members of NRC went for this competition along with Mr. Nihar Ranjan Sahoo and Mr. Swagat Samantaray, Faculty Advisors, NRC. Congratulation NRC for bringing this National Accolade to NIST! National Institute of Science & Technology, Berhampur, of 18

From the Editors Desk It is March and it is already 40deg and rising. As the mercury soars, so does the apprehensions about placement. Will the IT industry arise from its overall slumber and get back to the campuses as before? As companies get choosy in going to more select colleges, the challenge for NIST is to show extraordinary value for its graduates. Thanks to the placement cell and the Pre-Placement training for bringing in the best of resources and training our students for tomorrow. We are happy that many students have chosen to appear at GATE and MBA entrance examinations and have come out with flying colors. We are relieved that the BPUT agitations are over and the new Vice Chancellor gets going with an aggressive agenda of change. Whose interest do these agitations serve when a handful of students paralyse the functioning of colleges and upset the entire timetable of classes and examinations? NIST e_news congratulates all the student winners at different competitions. Special Congratulations to NRC for their wonderful and historic performance at ROBOCON and for making NIST proud of being the recipient of the National Innovative Award Dipti Ranjan Lenka Conferences/Seminars/Workshops Attended Ms. Sonali Prava Dash,Faculty,Dept.of ECE, Mr. Mihir Hota and Mr. Sukanta Ku Tripathy, Faculty members, Dept.of Physics attended an International Conference on MEMS and Opto- Electronics Technologies (ICMOT-2010) from 22 nd -23 rd January-2010 and presented a paper, segmented core clad fiber design for enhanced SBS thresold and improved coupling efficiency, vol.1, pp-76-79,2010 at the Conference Proceedings. 6 NASSCOM will host the scores of all NAC-Tech test takers in its website and will make the profiles available to its member companies. In addition, NASSCOM has also tied up with Naukri.com for hosting the CVs of candidates in their site for increasing the employment opportunity. Detailed feedback on their knowledge and skills - which will help them to decide which industry verticals to pursue a career in. However along with a valid NAC-Tech score a consistent academic record with at least 60% in aggregate in the qualifying degree (B.E, B. Tech or MCA, as the case may be) will be preferred by the companies. However, please note that a high NAC-Tech does not automatically guarantee placement in an endorsing company, as different companies have their own short listing criteria. Eye Awareness Camp Working on computers for more than two hours a day can make the eyes feel tired and cause frequent headaches, irritation and watering of eyes. The IPL scheduled had undergone a change as the Telengana issue continued to act as a threat to the matches. As a result of these internal conflicts all the matches were moved out of the state. In the meantime, Cuttack got lucky as it got a chance to host two matches scheduled on 19 th and 21 st of March both of which will see Deccan Chargers in action. The Centre denied influencing IPL against Pakistan. Another issue that has been in the headlines is the BT-brinjal issue. The proposed plan of introduction has met with stiff resistance from farmers, 11 state governments and green activists. The Indian hockey team after getting off to a flyer against arch rivals Pakistan failed the hopes of the fans again as it crashed out of the World Cup being held in India. 14 Cynosure of all Eyes Ms. Neena Choudhary B. Tech., 4 th Sem., Team e_news On this 8th of March, I realized how rapidly time passes by. Memories are still fresh when a year before in 2009 my friends wished me a Happy Women s Day and lo! Here I am this year again receiving the same wishes. It made me realize how lucky I was to be born as a girl (and especially because we don t have any men s day celebrations!!!). The process will continue as again in the coming years we will go through the tokenism of remembering the one half of our population a declining half consisting of women. Life of a woman is not that easy as it seems to a man. She transfers herself from one role to another in every second. A girl is a daughter, a girl becomes a woman, a woman becomes a daughter-in-law, a woman becomes a wife, a woman becomes a mother, and a woman becomes a relative. These are not the only roles she plays in her life on earth. When a girl is born her room is often painted in pink and her cloths are of the same color. Pink is the light color of red, the color of blood. And it symbolizes that the world cannot grow without a woman. She is just like the Pandora box. She is always a mystery to men but when understood properly she is full of surprises and gifts. A girl is the best creation by God ever. And even boys admire this fact. Today girls have created their own space in the society which cannot be ignored. Yet, her status is a sort of paradox. If on one hand she is at the peak of ladder of success, on the other hand she is mutely suffering the violence afflicted on her. As compared with past, women in modern times have achieved a lot but in reality they have to still travel a long way. Their path is full of roadblocks. They have proven themselves many a times. But in India they are yet to get their dues. The sex ratio of India shows that the Indian society is still prejudiced against female. There are 933 females per thousand males in India according to the census of 2001, which is much below the world average of 990 females. There are many problems which women in India have to go through daily. These problems have become the part and parcel of life of Indian women and some of them have accepted them as their fate. A male can smoke and that too shamelessly even with women around, but a female can t. And if she does she loses her dignity and character. Smoking or drinking is bad for human health then why are these restrictions only on a woman. If a boy doesn t lose his dignity on wearing shorts why does a girl? False words spread around like fire if a girl is seen outside on Valentine s Day even if she is with her friends. She is the one to face harassment in public transport, eve teasing, verbal abuse and even sexual assault. A boy can wander around on the roadside any time he feels to but a girl cannot after 6 or 7 in the evening. And the reason is that she is not safe. Who is the one causing her fear? It is this male dominating society. Questions may be even raised to this article, some even speaking vulgar, because a girl has risen to put forth questions. Whatever women do they must do twice as well as men to be thought half as good. Luckily, this is not difficult. The women have succeeded in ignoring the barriers and moving ahead. The women have left the secured domain of their home and are now in the battlefield of life, fully armored with their talent. The celebrations of 8 th March won t be complete unless men start respecting women, and the respect has to come from within. And even if it is not done, no woman will be raped, abused or tortured, because a spark is already up and only a woman knows when it may turn into a fire. Let this situation not arise, there is nothing harm in providing equal rights to both the genders of the population. What is required at this hour is everyone questioning themselves on how true they are as a woman and to a woman. 15 Tech Check Samsung E6 ereader ready to Change your World Samsung is ready to rock the world with its new E6 ereader. It not only allow you to access the content easily but also works as a digital notepad, taking down notes as well as thoughts directly on the page. What makes it stand away from the crowd is its electromagnetics resonance (EMR) stylus pen which provides writing capabilities to the user. We can make annotations and pen down our own thoughts while reading with its help. Even images can be modified easily with direct handwriting and memos. But, for a lazy person like me there voice recording functionality too. It has a 6 E-ink display at 600 X 800 resolution with 8-Gray scale for reading anywhere and everywhere. The best thing is that it can support e-pub, PDF, TXT, BMP and JPG formats. Also it has the text-to-speech (TTS) technology. Now talking about other features: it is provided with Wi-Fi connectivity and Bluetooth 2.0 facilities. The internal memory is of 2 GB thus you can store 1500 books or pages of memos, where it is facilitated by a microsd card slot. Plustek Smart Office PL1530 : scanner shared on two PCs The word satisfaction does not give satisfaction when it is spoken keeping technology in mind. Common man is generally satisfied with a laptop and a scanner on the table but it s not the case with everyone. Thus Plustek is here with the world s first scanner which can be shared between two PCs (fixed or mobile) via interface USB, and it has been named Smart Office PL1530. It is shared by two PCs via USB ADF. It not only provides interface for the two systems for file sharing but also increases productivity by reducing waiting and reducing time. It is compatible with USB 2.0 through the two slots. Now talking about processing time, it can process 15 pages or 30 photos per minute with a quality of 600 X 600 dpi. It is compatible with the new operating system Windows 7 and will be first seen in the Italian market in the near future. Courtesy: coolest-gadgets.com, coolestgizmosandgadgets.com Md. Ashraf Adil, B. Tech., 6th Sem., Team e_news ashraf.adil_13@rediffmail.com Expectations of the Industries from the Fresher Mr. Atanu Dutta, Faculty, Dept. of CSE & Manager, Placement Cell The IT revolution would reach more than two billion people of the world by 2015 and many of them will be illiterate so we need to focus on non-text, non-english interfaces like video, animations, voice recognition, etc. Mobile devices will rule the world & hence we need to start playing with mobile platforms. The products need to be more user-friendly. The emerging areas are Human Computer Interaction, User Centered Design, etc. So the Graduate Engineer Trainees need to get their basics right. A engineering student who is aspiring to make a career in IT sector needs to be extremely good in Mathematics, Statistics, Probability Theories, Data Structures, understanding the Complexities of the Algorithms, Concepts of Operating System, Computer Networks, etc. A fresher who wants to make a career in the IT industry must treat presentation skills as equally important like documenting, designing, algorithmic & programming skills. They are expected to know how to create or write good documents, business s, presentation slides, etc. They must think about what the listeners want to know instead of what they want to tell. One must learn to speak well in public and learn to avoid the stuffs that one find extremely interesting, but the listener doesn t. The technology will keep evolving in unforeseen directions so learning to learn would become a key factor. Adaptability to new ideas, reading habits, comprehension and the fundamentals of the software engineering process needs to be understood National Institute of Science & Technology, Berhampur, of 18

thoroughly. We often come across resume with quoted experience like 2.3 years. What does that mean? Why not put hours, minutes and seconds also! An engineer must learn to create proper resume. A good quote comes to my mind If you cannot convince the recruiters, confuse them. It is really surprising that most of the good programmers are from Mechanical & Communication Engineering streams. They learn the basic concepts of Computer Science passionately. A famous quote comes to my mind: I have not failed. I ve just found 10,000 ways that won t work. Mere getting the certifications won t be good enough if the Engineers fail to apply the knowledge. Engineers are responsible for some of the greatest inventions the world depends on. Everything from space shuttles to air conditioning systems to bridges requires the work of an engineer. To be successful in the field of engineering, one must have certain qualities. The good engineers have excellent analytical skills and are continually examining things and thinking of ways to help things work better. They are naturally inquisitive. They pay meticulous attention to detail. The slightest error can cause an entire structure to fail, so every detail must be reviewed thoroughly during the course of completing a project. They can translate the complex technical details into simple language and also communicate verbally with clients and other engineers working together on a project. They are creative and can think of new and innovative ways to develop new systems and make existing things work more efficiently. They are able to make sense of complex systems and understand how things work and how problems arise. The good engineers understand that they are part of a larger team working together to complete one project successfully, and therefore, work well as part of that team. Hence, the students of NIST are expected to take serious interests in the technical seminars, workshops, summer courses, campus connect programs, preplacement training classes and various online contests, like, Aspirations2020, Code Zap Guru, etc. which would add values and help them to become industry-ready. SAT Says: Satire on Attire Kewal Krishna, B.Tech, 4th Sem Hello everyone! I am SAT. The writer thought it would be a cool synonym for satire so I was born out of his mind just like pigeons appear out of thin air during a magic show. Today SAT is going to talk about attires.adam was indeed THE FIRST MAN. He was God s pick, for he could roam around the forests and fawns, bushes and thorns, the great river down the lane or the mighty mountains near the shore, without having to worry about how he was dressed. He never worried whether his shirt was tucked in properly or whether the color combination of his put-ons was pleasant and soothing to the eyes of OTHERS!!! He was extremely callous and lucky. He never had to style himself for the opposite chromosomes. And more importantly the same was the case with EVE. YES!!! Those were the good old times.. Since then it has been the rule of the ATTIRES on the world of humans. A person is now judged on his dressing sense rather than his skills and abilities. He gets attention based on what he wears upon his body not what lies in his mind and heart. He may get a prestigious job offer if he wears an ARMANI or be thrown out from his work place on the very appearance of a bright, flashy red color shirt and to go with it golden trousers, an inappropriate combination as they say. What about his other competencies??? How hard he works, how masterful and genius he is in his field of expertise, his experience, and his innovativeness and creativity. When did the world become so appearance driven? How can we Indians forget a man known as MAHATMA GANDHI? As far as SAT remembers, he wore a simple indigenous fabric known as.(if you don t know it then you need to shelve off your stylish and ultra modern clothes right now and wear the same and embark upon a journey to the HIMALAYAS). How did GANDHI become MAHATMA? It was the deeds not the dress. It was the pure, truthful and uncovered heart rather than the put-ons on the body. SAT is definitely not advising to go back to the pristine era and follow Adam s style of dressing, rather no dressing at all. However we need to rise above these petty things. Let not our decision and judgments be based only upon what one wears because the saying RAYMONDS: THE COMPLETE MAN is not true. Let s try to remove biases and differences which arise due to mere piece of fabric and value human beings more than just their attire. It is then that we will be complete men or women. Until then goodbye as SAT has to go and DRESS for the next satire. National Institute of Science & Technology, Berhampur, of 18

From: To: From Mailbox Hello Sir, How are you all? Hoping and wishing the best to all NISTians. I have written two or three articles for Nist-e-news, but I have read all it s issues from 2005 and still reads it on the internet. It s more than a month now since I have joined Mphasis on 11th of January. I was missing my college a lot. Specially my faculties and all my dear juniors. How are you buddies? Missing you a lot. To achieve a company is tough and to survive there is even tougher. I am still in my training and it s going on nicely. I have got an evening shift from 3:45 pm to 11:00 pm,but you know what, at the end of the day I am still fresh. I just think about you and I get all my energy back. I can still remember the helping hand you showed when I was not allowed to sit for placements by other companies. On the night at 1 or 2 am when we got our results for MphasiS,you told us to come tomorrow at 7:00AM for photograph, we all replied that we all are tired and can t come. You smiled and said I don t know whether you all will be there or not I will be there at 6:00AM.That sentence still gives me a lot of encouragement. Whatever values, I have learned from this college are still is within me and will remain forever. I was just an average student of IT branch. To all my juniors who have ever lost in their studies or life, I am a live example of fighting it back till its end. Never loose hope, god is there for you. CONGRATULATIONS to those who have got a placement and MY BEST WISHES to all those who are still there to get it, never give up Thanks and Regards, Rabi Anand, IT (2005 batch) Date: 16 Feb :44: From: prof_sppati@yahoo.co.in Dear Ajit, It is good that NIST was represented by two delegates to OPS. You may note that even if I did not go, they (initiated by Prof Krutibas Patnaik, Prof LP Singh, Prof N. Barik) elected me as PRESIDENT of OPS. It is a responsibility and a part credit is given to my good time in NIST. As you know whichever charge I am given I function in my style-and try to something more than my predecessors. I seek yours and assistance from NIST. Your Director can have also some innovative ideas for the functioning of such learned society -like Orissa Physical Society. Rest nice and in next mail. Yours Pati Sir Sportscast Subject: Well Wishes from Rabi Anand( ) Date: Wed, 17 Feb :57: To: akpanda62@hotmail.com Subject: Re: OPS 2010 Sachin and Adityanshu, B. Tech., 8 th sem., Team e_news This edition of sportscast is dedicated to arguably the greatest son of Indian cricket Sachin Ramesh Tendulkar. The entire cricketing world stood spellbound as Sachin waltzed, blending power with finesse, creating and innovating. The man familiar with conquests, conquered once again. Sachin Tendulkar made history as the timeless fort in the nearby mountains of Gwalior s Roop Singh stadium stood witness to an immortal feat and helped India to 2 nd place in ODI rankings. His unbeaten double hundred has started fresh debates as to who is the greatest cricketer of all times. Sachin very humbly ignores such comparisons and said his focus is on winning matches. In other cricketing news, the season-3 of IPL started with much brouhaha and in the second match only Yusuf Pathan dazzled scoring the fastest century in the shortest format, a 37 balls century, thus promising another National Institute of Science & Technology, Berhampur, of 18

enthralling season. Also Brett lee has announced retirement from test cricket so as to prolong his career in the shorter version of the game. The Pakistan cricket board has banned some of its players for poor performance in the series whitewash against Australia There was good news for English clubs in champions league soccer as both Manchester united and Arsenal steamrolled into the quarter-finals while there was heartbreak for both Real Madrid and Fiorentina as Lyon and Bayern Munich got the better of them respectively. The other four spots are yet to be decided. India once again failed to rise up to the expectations finishing a poor 8 th in the 12-nation hockey world cup as the mighty Australians got third time lucky defeating the resilient Germans 2-1 in the finals. In some local news, the 6th Asim Memorial Engineers Cup for cricket, two times defending champions NIST was humbled by a gritty IACR team in the finals. The writer of this article (Adityanshu) was also a member of the team and bowled his heart out but even he could not contain the IACR batsman Akshay Palihari who scored 125 runs in the tournament and was adjudged man of the series. In the next issue, we promise more thrill, drama and facts from the ever happening world of sports. Keep mailing us at panda.sachin101@gmail.com or anshu.aditya@gmail.com. In Conversation with... Prof. Sangram Mudali, Director, NIST Q>What prompted you to come back to Orissa to set up an engineering college? - The motive was twofold. One was professional satisfaction and the other was altruistic. I wanted to contribute towards Orissa. It was a completely off-beat career and being an exception was interesting. Q>Most memorable moment in life so far.. - Personally it would be my marriage and bringing up my two children and professionally it was the establishment of NIST. Q>A dream still unachieved. - Providing quality education to the poor students and making technical education accessible to all the students of Orissa. Q>Where do you see yourself 10 years from now? - Professionally I want to grow NIST to a research institution, apart from its quality teaching. In terms of growth, I want to see NIST as a University with over students. Q>One person you have always looked upto.. - Nelson Mandela Q>What kind of a person are you (in a single word/line)? - Enthusiastic, dynamic, never say die, courage under fire that s how I see myself. Q>Success or Excellence - Excellence. We have abundance of success stories but excellence is in short supply. Q>Any message to the students resorting to smoking and drinking.. - It s a medical situation. Smoking, drinking or drugs leads to degeneration of the human tissue. Personally I have tried all of them and I can say that none of them are stress busters. Advice is to refrain as long as your Dad is paying the cash and even after that. Q> Your message to the students. - Be proud of your alma mater and always come with a suggestion along with the complaint. 19 Every year with the fall of winter and subtle arrival of spring, we at NIST step into a very different shoe, taking every NISTIAN into the merry-go-rounds, forgetting the studies, and the hard core syllabus. The name is WAVES, the socio-cultural festival of NIST, the Mecca of creative zeal. The 2-day journey provides a roller coaster ride into amazing performances, fun filled acts, extremely exciting events providing numerous opportunities for both the students as well as faculty members to prove their worth. This year it kicked off on the 5 th of March with the marathon race. In the next event that followed, teachers gave the students of NIST volleyball team a tough fight in a match that was friendly played in a competitive spirit. The next to follow was a basketball match between the final year and 3 rd year students in which the 3 rd year students emerged victorious. Tennis matches, swimming competitions, art competitions followed suit and each one proving more interesting than the other. The ceremonial beginning took place in the evening and then the audience got a taste of the classical Odissi performances by a few truly talented students. We are actually proud of ourselves for safe guarding our rich culture. There were a few rib-tickling mimicry acts by the students, which showcased our multi-talented culture at NIST. Multi-linguistic skits proved as the real entertainers with the audience laughing their hearts out to some scintillating performances. Ramayan re Haeeran, Uff English!, Love aaj kal to name a few. Club Eureka launched their multi-lingual biannual magazine, CYGNUS (in a CD format), by Ms. Geetika Mudali, Placement Director. The second day was a stage for the Antakshari rounds, the Quiz, Dumb Charades, and many individual and group performances by the students. The events included participation of both students and faculty members in their real festive spirit. The evening saw a few acts giving the audience simple but quite useful social messages. The coveted performance by NMS was breathtaking with the audience dancing to the tunes of the hit numbers performed. The conclusion to this year Waves was the much awaited Fashion Show. Being the cynosure of all eyes, the show left all the audience aback with the faculty members on the ramp with all in new attires presenting on the theme, Professionals to Entrepreneurs whereas the students came up with the Various Ages beginning with Adam n Eve to the age of Robots and Machines. The events had excellent participation and every event was a huge success. Hats off to the coordinators and the volunteers! This edition of Waves-09, as every year, was special for the 1 st year students, who have just stepped into the limelight and the final year students, who will be taking a new step ahead of the college limelight. The Alma mater also felicitated the 2009 pass out batch for their outstanding performances in the University exams. The toppers of different streams were awarded with the Gold Medals by the Chief Guest of the evening, Prof. J. K. Baral, Former Vice Chancellor, Berhampur University and Prof. Sangram Mudali, Director, NIST.
