1 Job Description Deputy Director of Sport THE SCHOOL King s College School is an independent day school for boys aged 7-18 and girls aged There are over 160 staff in the two common rooms and 130 non-teaching staff. Founded in 1829 by Royal Charter, King s is a school of over 1,400 pupils located in one of the most attractive and peaceful parts of London. The original school buildings date from the 18 th century and are surrounded by nearly 20 acres of sports pitches and laid-out gardens. Playing fields occupy a further 20 acres nearby. The senior school is one of the most successful in the world. In November 2017, King s was awarded the title of The Sunday Times London Independent Secondary School of the year for 2017/18. Alastair McCall, Editor of The Sunday Times Parent Power, wrote: King s is the embodiment of everything you could want in a school. This comes three years after King s won the title of Sunday Times Independent School of the Year in 2014/15, whilst the school has also won IB School of the Year and Best for IB twice from The Sunday Times and The Week respectively. The most recent Good Schools Guide Review (2017) states: Intellectually exhilarating yet principled, this is selective education at its very best a real golden ticket. Academically, King s is among the very best boys and co-ed independent schools in the UK, and indeed the number one boys/co-ed independent school in 2017 (The Sunday Times, November 2017). This summer, 48 pupils confirmed Oxbridge offers, 51% of all sixth form grades were A* at A level or 7 at IB Higher Level and 83% of all GCSEs were graded A*. The school plays 18 different sports against other schools, and its 1 st XV had a highly successful season, including victory over Eton College. Girls sport in the sixth form has been remarkably successful with King s girls teams beating long-established girls schools in hockey and netball. The junior school, which shares the main campus, is equally sought-after for its combination of superb academic teaching, pastoral care, sport and activities. Drama and music in both the junior and senior schools are among the best in the UK, and the junior school has an impressive record of top positions in national sporting and academic competitions. King s prides itself on its combination of innovation and tradition. The whole school is committed to the values of good discipline, hard work and good manners, but we are also keen to embrace new challenges. In 2010 the sixth form became co-educational and this has been an outstanding success; we admit around 50 girls each year. We prepare sixth formers for both the International Baccalaureate Diploma (IB) and A Levels. Our curriculum at all levels encourages pupils to look beyond the rigours of the classroom, as the vibrant success of our drama, music and games departments indicates. Just as important to us is the commitment we make to the Combined Cadet Force, the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, community service and our partnerships with 27 local maintained schools. To enable so much to occur, Friday afternoons for year 9 and above are made over entirely to these, and other, activities. Since September 2016, King s has admitted boys aged eleven directly into the senior school. This has been a particularly successful move with 350 boys competing for the 44 places available. The new entry has already made the structure of King s more open to a wider range of parental backgrounds, whilst preserving the very successful entry points at earlier ages into the junior school, and at 13 and 16 into the senior school. We note that of the new 11+ cohort, over half are coming to us from

2 local primary schools. We have raised significant bursary funds to support the new 11+ senior school entry. The school is heavily oversubscribed throughout with between 5 and 10 applicants for every place. Although pupils are admitted to the school without reference to their religious background, the school s moral teaching is rooted in the Christian ethic. Alumni of the school include poet and painter Dante Gabriel Rossetti, novelist Robert Graves, painter Walter Sickert, composer Robin Holloway, musicians Marcus Mumford (Mumford & Sons) and Dan Smith (Bastille), theatre director Christopher Luscombe, and the Hollywood film stars Ben Barnes and Khalid Abdalla. The Corporation of King s College School also owns a very popular pre-prep school. Wimbledon Common Preparatory School (known locally as Squirrels ) is an all-boys pre-prep school located on the Ridgway, opposite King s, in spacious accommodation with generous playing spaces. The school is highly sought-after, and has been extensively refurbished by King s in recent years. We also own a number of residential properties very near the school or near our off-site playing fields along with a boathouse at Putney. In association with a leading educational business in China, Dipont, we are underway with plans to open a number of schools in China. Here, we act as consultants, and our income from these projects is invested in the King s bursary fund. We are supporting two schools, one in Wuxi and one in Hangzhou, and have recently appointed head teachers for each of them. For more information about King s please see our website - THE DEPARTMENT The Physical Education and Games department is a dynamic, stimulating and high achieving department that has gained national recognition and success in a number of different sports. The department works across both the junior and senior schools and the 21 staff within the department work closely and collaboratively. The department consists of 8 fully qualified teachers, 5 sports coaches, 4 graduate assistants, 3 gap students and an administrative assistant. The department believes in providing high quality physical education lessons and games sessions using a variety of teaching and learning strategies. The main sports for boys are rugby, hockey, rowing, soccer, cricket and tennis but many other sports enjoy considerable support and participation at the school. Our girls play hockey, netball, tennis and rounders. In addition to this, there is a thriving extra-curricular programme in a wide variety of sports taking place throughout the week. The school's indoor sporting facilities include a 30m x 18m sports hall, four squash courts, a fitness suite, a strength and conditioning room and a 30m indoor swimming pool. On-site outdoor facilities comprise 6 floodlit tennis courts, rugby/hockey/cricket pitches and an athletics practice area. The school also owns extensive sports grounds at Motspur Park, 1½ miles from the school, with five grass pitches, two floodlit all-weather surfaces and state-of-the art pavilion. Work on construction of an exciting second sports hall and a replacement swimming pool, along with improved strength and conditioning and fitness suites, unifying on-site indoor facilities to a single location is underway and is due to be completed for September The Physical Education department is heavily involved in the organisation and running of major sporting trips and tours. In recent years, boys have had the opportunity to experience sporting culture in South America, Australia, America, Malaysia and South Africa. The curriculum time dedicated to PE and games changes as pupils progress through the school and IGCSE PE is offered. The department has been extremely successful since introducing this ten years ago and have a secured 100% A/A* with all pupils who have taken the course.

THE POST The successful candidate will be a sportsperson of proven ability, required to lead and coach at least one sport to a high level, and who will be confident officiating in at least two of King s major sports. They will set the standards and the vision for a large and successful department, in effect shaping the morale of both the department and the pupils of the school through their management, leadership and the tone they set. The post holder may also be required to lead one of the school s major sports. The deputy director of Sport will work closely with the director of Sport, the head of girl s games, and the head of junior school Sport to assist with the running and implementation of the school s sports programme and provision, and ensuring a cohesive and broad-minded approach to school sport. As deputy head of department there will be opportunity for management and mentoring, as well as responsibility for leading the department s curriculum physical education provision, incorporating whole school policies and working with other departments in the school as necessary. They will help to develop and deliver the overall strategy and objectives of the department, assisting with the creation and implementation of change processes. The deputy director of Sport will guide and advise colleagues, particularly new members in the department, in developing the sporting skills and aptitudes of all staff; including training for coaching, umpiring and refereeing, and encouraging a variety of teaching approaches within the department to assist the professional development and appraisal of staff and create a motivated and empowered team. The role requires collaboration with other departments within the school and the development of links with clubs, societies, professional bodies and people outside the school, for the benefit of the school and its community. The post holder will also play a significant role in creating a new, value-added sports development programme for interested and able pupils. 4 Management and Leadership The deputy director of Sport is responsible for assisting the smooth running of a large and vibrant department, across both the senior and junior schools. They will play a significant role in the succession planning of the department as well as maintaining and developing the team to deliver against existing commitments. The role may also include leading one of the major sports. Play a leading role in the creation of a new sport development programme for our pupils. Communicate with the department about responsibilities and deadlines for reporting. Curriculum Physical Education - review and update the current schemes of work for years 7, 8 and 10 (L5th) including IGCSE. Work with RPM for the JS schemes. Ensure the highest standards of teaching and learning are taking place. Circulate a scheme of work to all members of the department. Ensure all equipment is ordered for each of these activities. Oversee to Curriculum PE budget. Communicate with the marketing department to ensure regular reporting and updating of King's sport news e.g. website, banners, twitter, e-news. Organise internal cover for the PE department (JS & SS) co-ordinating with the Head of JS Sport and DOS. Chair the department weekly meeting and direct the department in the absence of the DOS. Be on the Games Committee Support the DOS with administration and decision making for the department. Work with the DOS to support heads of sport in designing and reviewing fixtures, their programmes, provision, facilities, equipment and tours. The ensure a consistent approach that follows policy. Kit (currently kukri): work with the department administrator to ensure all staff are appropriately kitted out in school sports attire and ensure staff uphold these standards. Work with the head of enterprise and school shop where appropriate. Act as a second point of contact for common room staff regarding PE and games and pupils. To report to break every day and be accessible for staff and pupils. To work with the department administrator to ensure there is a clear facilities timetable for extra-curricular activities and practices. Leading by example when setting the standards expected in PE and games lessons, the school s after school programme and involvement in Saturday sporting commitments Supporting and encouraging teachers in charge of individual sports to develop their specific sporting areas Ensuring high quality coaching arrangements are in place throughout the year Coordinating and oversee sports tours as well as enrichment and extension opportunities Co-ordinate the 11+ and 13+ scholarship days alongside the sports administrator General Attending staff meetings, assemblies, whole school events, training days, parents evenings. Actively participating in the promotion of the school e.g. open days, marketing of the department and informal promotion to those outside. Ensuring compliance with the school s Safeguarding Policy at all times. Actively seek to create a climate of respect and understanding of the needs of children. Ensuring that all school policies, standards and expectations are maintained within the department. Helping with the smooth administration and smooth running of the department.
