Dr. Richard Markwardt, Superintendent; Dr. Philip Wagner, Director of Human Resources; Dr. Ruth Friedman, Director of Curriculum/Instruction & Operations; and Hersh Varma, President of Student Council, were also present. Program Reports and Presentations: Dr. Markwardt congratulated the members of JWCA. It is my great pleasure at this time to recognize an outstanding group of high school students who have won national honors this year in the Beachwood High School Junior Council on World Affairs program. As most of you know, JCWA is a rigorous program whereby our students compete in Model United Nations conferences held at colleges and universities throughout the Midwest and East Coast. Prior to each conference, the students are assigned to represent and research various countries throughout the world in terms of such issues as international security policy, world trade and economic development, world health issues, the Middle East and United Nations reform. Then, at the Model UN conferences, the student delegates work in separate committees to represent their assigned countries on these issues. Delegates are judged on how accurately and fully they represent the needs and subtle realities of their assigned countries, their knowledge of the issues and attendant complexities, and their ability to present solutions, craft and pass resolutions that address the given issues and the needs of other nations. Their ability to work with representatives of many countries while remaining consistent with the policies and needs of their assigned countries is essential. Knowledge and use of parliamentary procedure and diplomacy all contribute to a student's success. At this time, I d like to ask the members of our JCWA team who are here tonight to stand and introduce yourselves. I am extremely proud to tell you that these students won the highest group honors at two national Model United Nations conferences this school year. Our JCWA team earned the Outstanding Large Delegation Award for the second consecutive year at the University of Virginia Model United Nations Conference and for the third consecutive year, won the Best Large Delegation Award at the Michigan State University Model United Nations. These students also received 33 awards for outstanding individual performance, including nine delegate awards at the Georgetown University North American Invitational Model United Nations, or NAIMUN, which is the largest high school Model UN in the nation. Seven of these students earned the outstanding delegate award for their respective committees: Akash Appachi, Max Eden, Sam Kay, Tamar Lisbona, Shali Mahna, Michaela Ross and Suzanne Schiavone..

2 Also at NAIMUN, Jordan Blank and Gabe Margolis earned Honorable Mention Delegate Awards and Hersh Varma won a Commended Delegate Award. Fifteen students received top individual awards at the University of Virginia conference. Winning the gavel award for Best Delegate were Hannah Harris, Evan Peskin, Michaela Ross and Craig Rothenberg. Tamar Lisbona, Shali Mahna and Hersh Varma were named Outstanding Delegates. Receiving honorable mention delegate awards were Jordan Blank, Max Eden, Masha Khusid, Gabe Margolis and Jacqueline Stern. Jon Fish, Sam Kay and Suzanne Schiavone earned commended delegate awards. More than 700 students from 35 schools in seven states participated in this competition. Winning individual awards at the Michigan State University JCWA conference were Best Delegates Max Eden, Michaela Ross and Hersh Varma; Honorable Mention Delegates Akash Appachi, Shali Mahna, Suzanne Schiavone and Jacqueline Stern; and Commended Delegate Jennie Anne Simson.. To cap an outstanding year, our all-freshmen JV team won 10 awards at the Cleveland Council on World Affairs Model United Nations, held at Cleveland State University. Matt Baron and Sevy Harris earned Best Delegate/Gavel Awards; Brittany Crosby, Ethan Isaacson, Jennie Anne Simson and Alexandra Stern won Superior Delegate Awards; Eric Parris and Ben Reisman won Excellent Delegate Awards; and Alexa Millstein and Carlos Padilla won Honorable Mention Awards. These awards are a testament to the intellectual prowess and talents of these students and their dedicated and engaging advisor Evan Luzar. But what they are learning under Mr. Luzar s outstanding and creative leadership goes way beyond national awards for their bookshelves and bulletin boards. They are learning how to research. How to write effectively and persuasively. How to speak in public. How to resolve conflicts. How to build consensus and how to work as a team. In short, they are learning the life skills to enable them to truly develop as intellectual entrepreneurs with a social conscience. Congratulations to Mr. Luzar and his talented, award-winning team. We are very proud to call you our own. also congratulated the students and thanked them for their hard work.
