1 1 st Friday of the Month National Clean-up Preparedness Brief 1.0 Background The national clean-up day has been embraced nationwide by many stakeholders including government departments, private sector and civil society. All provinces and districts have lined up activities among them media campaigns, roadshows and other public awareness raising initiatives. The inaugural national clean-up exercise is expected to be characterised by rigorous cleaning activities in every district and wards for towns and Cities. Mutare is a shining example where every Councillor will lead the Ward in cleaning the surroundings. Provinces and districts have established steering committees comprising of multiple stakeholders to spearhead the cleaning activities at various sites within their committee s jurisdiction. Cleaning material have been mobilized from EMA, Local Authorities and stakeholders such as local retail businesses, miners, government departments, vendors, transporters and the general community and has been distributed accordingly to need. In addition, other civil society groups and corporates have targeted to clean public areas in the form of bus termini in Harare CBD, and business centres. Other parallel events not directly championed by the steering committees have been organised as complementary programmes by other institutions that have experience in championing cleaning programmes such as Clean and Green that works with SPAR Zimbabwe and some Residents Associations targeting their usual clean up areas. Media engagement has been planned at all levels starting from district up to the national level. District Administrators, Provincial Ministers and other senior government officials have addressed the media fraternity through press conferences, press releases as well as adverts in order to remind the nation of 1

2 the important cause. Media targeting includes national Radio stations, national TV, national and provincial newspaper as well as local commercial radio stations. The Environmental Management Agency will do door to door visits in some selected strategic areas such as industrial sites and CBDs to encourage stakeholders to commit some staff that will participate in the exercise. Business will not necessarily shut down but firms are encouraged to organise their staff into group shifts that will exchange during the cleaning period.
