3 A Message From Your Student Directors We are excited for you to attend our Setting Sail orientation program! Setting Sail is designed to begin your transition of becoming a CNU Captain. You will have the opportunity to become familiar with the campus, learn about University programs and resources and, of course, to meet other members of the Class of Some of the people you meet at Setting Sail may become your hall mates, your classmates, your teammates, and your good friends over the next four years. This presentation will provide you with the information necessary to arrive prepared for the program. Your advanced preparation will help you to get the most out of your Setting Sail experience. Information regarding the Summer Leadership Adventure Program for PLP students is also included. Please read through to the end so that you do not miss any information. 6 Setting Sail Arrival Check In for Setting Sail begins at 8:00am in the Diamonstein Concert Hall Lobby for guests and parking deck for students. While our program starts at 9:15am, you will need to allow time after you check in to move your luggage to your residence hall room. Note: If you have forgotten which Setting Sail Session you chose, simply log back into your reservation found on the Admitted Student System. You will be shown a summary of your reservation, including your session date.

7 Setting Sail: Getting Here You should plan to arrive on campus via our Avenue of the Arts entrance (by the Christopher Newport statue) and follow the guided traffic pattern through the traffic circle, onto campus and to the appropriate parking area. For specific directions, please see the Getting Here tab at Please prepare in advance for construction in the Hampton Roads area as our major highway, I64 is under construction

8 Setting Sail: Guests Parents, family members and guests are encouraged to attend with you. Please note that ALL guests (this includes parents, family members, etc.) must register to attend so that we can properly prepare for their arrival. If your guest wishes to attend but has not yet registered, please log back into your Admitted Student System account and add them to your record. The program sessions for guests range in topic from financial aid, campus safety, transitioning from high school to college, etc. The $50.00 guest fee covers meals, programming and materials for while here for Setting Sail. We are unable to offer housing for guests on campus. However, a number of local lodging options available.

9 Packing List While you are about to spend your next four years at CNU, Setting Sail lasts a day and a half so please pack accordingly. View this time as an opportunity to lighten your load, to take a break from Netflix and Facebook, and to really connect with some new friends. There are some items you will need to bring to make your Setting Sail a comfortable and enjoyable experience If you are a PLP student, please be sure to read the PLP Section of this presentation for additional items needed for your Summer Leadership Adventure session.

10 What to Pack? For your room: Students will be staying on campus in one of our residence halls. You will need to bring the following with you: Sheets/Blanket/Sleeping Bag (Note: Our beds are extra long twin so make sure you have that length. If not, bring a sleeping bag.) Pillow Towel and Washcloth Toiletries (i.e. shampoo, soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.) Clothing: Setting Sail is a fairly casual event and we want you to be comfortable in the clothes that you wear. Activities will be both inside and outside and range from educational sessions to more active games. Comfortable shoes, we do not recommend flip-flops. Comfortable clothes (Ladies: skirts, dresses, etc. are not recommended) A sweatshirt or light jacket as our session rooms are air conditioned and may be cool. Bring rain gear! You never know when it will rain in Newport News! Don t forget a cell phone charger and medications (i.e. inhalers, EpiPen, etc.)!

11 Interest Meetings Athletes: Coaches work flexible schedules in the summer because of sports camps, recruiting, etc. If you hope to make contact with a team coach while you are on campus, we encourage you to schedule that meeting prior to your arrival. It is best to schedule meetings with coaches on day two of your Setting Sail, specifically after the closing. Marching Band: There will be a Marching Band Interest Meeting at the conclusion of day two around 1:30pm with Dr. Lopez in the Ferguson Center Concert Hall. Feel free to take the time after the conclusion of Setting Sail to meet with any offices on campus for which you may have questions.

12 Readiness Assessment Programming Readiness: Select students will be required to take the Programming Readiness Assessment. This brief assessment is for any student intending to major in Computer Science, Computer Engineering, Information Science, and Information Systems. Calculus Readiness Assessment: Select students will be required to take the Calculus Readiness Assessment. It will be administered to any student enrolled in Math 135, 140, 240, or 250. Additionally, any students intending on pursuing a Business, Physics, Computer Science, or Engineering Major should also take the assessment. Students will be notified prior to Setting Sail if they are scheduled to take this assessment and which one they are scheduled to take.

13 Setting Sail Closing Students will check out of their residence halls following the closing on day two of Setting Sail. PLP students staying for Leadership Adventure will be provided lunch and remain on campus for the first session that afternoon. Specific information regarding check-in will be provided by at a later date. Please note there are no sessions for parents during Leadership Adventure. Students staying for Leadership Adventure will remain in their same residence hall rooms throughout the duration of their stay.

17 Packing List You will need everything on the Setting Sail list, but we also ask you pack these things: Comfortable athletic clothing (shorts, t-shirts, etc.) is necessary. Ladies, dresses and skirts will not work! Sneakers and socks are necessary. It s a good idea to be prepared for rain with a rain jacket or umbrella. Be prepared for sun! Sunscreen is a must, but you may also want sunglasses or baseball caps. Water bottle Look out for an before your session that will reveal your team color!
